2 First English Historian The Venerable Bede (672 or A.D.) lived in his monastery from when he was a little child of seven until the time when he went home to be with his Lord. He loved the monastic life , Ed Sherwood, Berachah Bible Institute For him enjoyment was Jesus, prayer, reading, studying, and writing; these were the great loves of his life. He was the very first historian of England, by virtue of writing his most enjoyable book, Ecclesiastical History of the English People (731 A.D.). Grant us your light, O Lord, that the darkness in our hearts being wholly passed away we may come at last to the light, which is Christ. For Christ is the morning star, who when the night of this world has passed, brings to his saints the promised light of life, and opens to them eternal day. Amen. 2

6 Introductory Terms 2010, Ed Sherwood, Berachah Bible Institute Medieval ( or Mediaeval) refers to the Middle Ages. Period from fall of Roman Empire to the Renaissance. Circa 500 to 1500 AD. Sometimes inappropriately referred to as the Dark Ages. Usually refers primarily to the Western Europe (but our study will include the Western and Eastern Churches (and the churches in Persia, India, and China). Their purpose is to blame the turmoil and decline of the Middle Ages on Christianity which was the dominate religion in the West. Actually, the Christian faith was the glue or unifying factor that held people, societies, and kingdoms together following the fall of the Roman Empire. 7
