3 The Nature of Grace, Evil, Sin, Mercy and Grace: Conclusion Mercy is twofold: mercy in the forgiveness of sins and mercy in healing/comforting the wounds of sin. With the loss of Sanctifying Grace in the sin of Adam and Eve, we stand in need of redemption. With original sin the gates of Heaven are closed, we suffer and die and all are eternally separated from God. You may remember this is the definition of hell. Adam and Eve and all who died before the redemption of Jesus Christ went to hell. Now with a hundred and one objections raging through your mind, wondering, What in the hell is Fr. Galens talking about? Let me explain. The Hebrew word for hell is Sheol. The Greek word is Hades. It was the place of the dead. The Jewish understanding (as far as I understand it) in the time of Jesus was that there were two distinct places in Sheol: the place of the damned and the bosom of Abraham. Those in the place of the damned were in torment while those in the bosom of Abraham were in comfort. Our Lord speaks of this in the parable about Lazarus (the poor man covered in sores and the rich man). Obviously, the place known as the bosom of Abraham existed prior to Abraham it was the place of the dead, but with Abraham as the Father in Faith, the great Patriarch, those who were there were said to be resting in the bosom of Abraham, even if they were there before Abraham, such as Adam and Eve. The eternal nature of Sheol or Hell is that there is no leaving it without Divine intervention. The place of the damned was absent of all grace, even actual grace. Without actual grace the soul is incapable of willing or doing any good. It is in torment. The bosom of Abraham was not void of all grace. The souls here enjoyed a relative comfort. This is not purgatory. They were not being purified and perfected in a temporal way by which they would eventually leave and enter Heaven. They were there for eternity. However, there is a light for them in the darkness, the promise of a redeemer. While of its nature it is eternal, in God s mercy they are provided comfort and hope in a redeemer. At Jesus death He descended into Hell and those resting with Abraham rose with Him to Heaven while those in the place of the damned remained forever. Jesus undoes the sin of Adam. He restores the flow of Sanctifying Grace. This means we are called to live according to the nature of Sanctifying Grace, not simply our natural order. To put it simply, this means we must live like God, we must be holy as God is holy, and perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect. However, our nature is still wounded by sin and we suffer temptations to pride and self-indulgence. God s grace is there to help us, to heal the wounds of sin, to help us rise above them, and even to rise above the natural good of our nature to the living of a supernatural life of Divine Sacrificial Love. This is an act of Mercy on God s part. He forgives our sins and heals the wounds of our sins. However, He does not do this without our cooperation and consent. We must make every effort. With God s Grace all things are possible. If we fail, even if out of the stubbornness of our wills, He will forgive us, as long as we are sorry for love of God, our contrition is sincere, and we intend to try our best to avoid sin and to do good. We must imitate God s mercy in working to heal the wounds of sin, both spiritual and corporal, and by forgiving those who trespass against us. It is essential, however, that we remember how this grace comes to us: Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christ willed that all the Grace that He won for us should flow to us through His Church. The sacraments are the means we participate and are united in a real but mysterious way in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. It is through the sacraments that Sanctifying Grace comes to us and we can grow and increase in it. If our sin is mortal, we must return to God s Grace through the Sacrament of Confession. God s mercy is given to us to restore the fullness of His Grace, not only for the salvation of our souls, but the full redemption and resurrection of our bodies. To this end, our bodies must be united with the Body of Christ in Holy Communion. Here we have the fullness of Mercy and Grace. Mercy in that grace is given to us to heal us of our sins (Not mortal because mortal sin separates us from Sanctifying Grace and therefore no increase in Grace can occur. It must be forgiven and restored in the Sacrament of Confession). There is the fullness of Grace in that all Grace is afforded us to be Holy as God is Holy (except for a miracle of grace, the grace builds upon our nature in conjunction with our will and sacrificial effort). It can never be merciful to excuse someone from the sincere effort to resist sin because their nature is too weak and wounded. This would be to deny the power of Grace. It can temper a mortal sin into a venial sin, but they still must will the true good and intend to keep making an effort to do the true good, even if failure seems habitual. Eventually we know, because of the promise of Christ, there will be a new Heaven and a new Earth where body and soul will live in perfect harmony in the fullness of Grace. It will happen, not because we will be so faithful, but because Christ will intervene in human history when He returns. In Jesus and Mary

4 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Teen Life News Steubenville retreat will take place June at St Johns University. This was well attended last year and anyone interested in attending this year should contact Father Galens or Melissa Gordon as soon as possible. Join Teen Life: Any teens who have been confirmed and have not already joined teen life are encouraged to join by going to the St Patrick's website and filling out a registration form. When registering, teens should be sure to provide cell phone numbers to receive important text messages, and it is best to use either your Byram Hills address or a gmail address so that you can regularly check the St. Patrick of Armonk Google Plus Community. So...how do you do that? You must provide a gmail address (students school works!) asap. We will then send you an Invitation to join the google plus community you must "accept invitation". In order to find the invitation, you must have a google account, or gmail account. In your gmail make sure you check "All Mail" and/or "Social" or "Categories" to find your invitation to join. Sometimes it does not show up in the standard Inbox. It is important that you do this asap as we would like to use Google Plus as a means of communicating. AOL, Verizon and others do not work with Google plus. Parents are welcome to join our Google Plus Teen Life Community but you too must provide us with a gmail address. There is a need for Pastoral Care Volunteers at Northern Westchester Northwell Hospital in Mt. Kisco. They plan activities and have meals at local area restaurants. In June, they will hold their Annual Communion Breakfast. They welcome all Catholic Widows/Widowers. Paolo Floretta of the Franciscan Friars OFM Conv will bring a first class relic of Saint Anthony of Padua to the United States the week of his June 13th feast day. The relics will visit two churches in Yonkers, NY on June 15th and June 19th. June 15th: St. Ann s Church, 31 College Place, Yonkers, NY ( ); Veneration begins at 11 am until after the 7:30 pm Mass; Masses at noon and 7:30 pm June 19th, Church of St. Anthony 10 Squire Ave., Yonkers, NY ; veneration before and after each mass; Masses at 8 am, 10 am, and 12 noon.
