The Ordo lists the papal prayer intentions each month. Parishes are encouraged to publish the papal prayer intentions in their Sunday bulletins. To better know the concrete problems that trouble the Universal Church, especially those of the missions, the Holy Father asks that his monthly intentions be the object of knowledgeable and responsible prayer on the part of the people of God (Ordo). January Intentions General Intention That all may promote authentic economic development that respects the dignity of all peoples. Missionary Intentions That Christians of diverse denominations may walk toward the unity desired by Christ. 3 Sunday, February 2, 2104 Feast of the Presentation of the Lord World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life Pastors are encouraged to honor the religious working in their parishes at one of the Sunday Masses this day. Candlemas Day Celebrate Candlemas Day at home with the family in this traditional way. Each member takes with him/herself a candle to be blessed before Holy Mass to burn as the Christ-candle in the center of the meal table on Sundays and the greater feasts of the year, to be lighted in days of sorrow, in storms and sickness, and to be placed on the family shrine/altar. Book of Blessings # Blessing of Candles (during or outside of Mass) The brief service begins with the antiphon Nunc Dimittis (chanted/recited) followed by the priest blessing the candles and ends with the antiphon Ave, Regina caelorum in honor of the BVM. If the blessing takes place outside of Mass one may insert the readings/gospel of the day as well as some brief intercessions before the blessing by the priest. Nunc Dimittis and Ave, Regina caelorum may be replaced by other appropriate antiphons/songs expressing the theme of Christ, the Light of the Word. Nunc Dimittis Lord, now you let your servant go in peace, your word has been fulfilled: my own eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of every people: a light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel. Priest: God of power, who enlightens the world and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin, as we remember the Virgin Mother of your Son let the light of these candles illuminate our hearts and minds, that they may reflect always the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, for ever and ever. 4 February 3 rd Memorial of Saint Blaise Blessing of Throats Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: in the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit. Pastoral Note: (Ordo) In memory of St Blaise... the Blessing of Throats may be given on Sunday, February 2 nd by a priest, deacon, or a lay minister who follows the rites and prayers designated for a lay minister. During Mass, the blessing follows the homily and general intercessions, or, for pastoral reasons, it may take the place of the final blessing of the Mass. If, for pastoral reasons, each individual cannot be blessed in the usual manner, a priest (or deacon, if no priest is present) may give the blessing to all by extending his hands, without crossed candles, over the people while saying the prayer of blessing. Getting ready for Ash Wednesday If you want to try something new in your parish, have the parishioners bring in their old palms from Palm Sunday on the Sunday before Lent begins (March 2, 2014). Some parishes have a brief prayer service following the last morning Mass where the palms are burned and the priest explains the connection between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday. After collecting the palms, burn them and run them through a sifter/grinder to make sure that the ash material is fine. Some parishes have tried adding water to the mix to get a better smudge, but a little olive oil mixed into the ashes works better than water. The Church supply companies provide a great product that smudges very well, so you may choose to combine your parish ashes with some from the supply company. Start advertising in the bulletin about the Palm collection in February!
