PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN WORKSHOPS Certification is required by the Archdiocese for every adult working with children in any capacity. If you attended a workshop in 2011 or earlier, you must attend again for recertification. A workshop will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Tenafly on Tuesday, September 23 and also at St. Mary s Church in Dumont on October 4. 3 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 17, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Wednesday is the feast of one of the towering figures of the Middle Ages, St. Bernard of Claivaux ( ). As the son of a noble French family, he could have had his choice of prominent monasteries to enter, ensuring that he would rise to a distinguished position in the Church. But instead of joining an influential Abbey such as Cluny, he went, at the age of twenty-three, to the strict and poor Cistercians at Cîteaux, bringing thirty companions with him. Within three years he was assigned to found a monastery in the remote, ominously named Valley of Wormwood, which would soon, because of the success of his efforts, become known as Clairvaux the Valley of Light. It was the first of sixty-eight Cistercian monasteries Bernard would establish. Though Bernard relished the peace and obscurity of a monastic pursuit of holiness, the needs of the Church and its people soon summoned him to meet the challenges of his world. Though he did not live to great longevity, he created a plentiful record of achievement as a reformer, an author of many classic works on the spiritual life, an enormously influential preacher (contending against the Albigensian heresy and building support for the Second Crusade) and a wise consultant to both popes and secular governments. One of his notable admirers, Thomas Merton, praising the wide extent of his accomplishments, wrote that Bernard is sent to instruct us how human a saint must be, to forge out the will of God in the heat of the affairs of men. And Rev. Bruno Scott James, editor of a fascinating modern collection of Bernard s letters, paid him high tribute when he noted that Every age has its great men. They strut across the pages of history full of sound and fury, and then they are gone. Great men they may be, but they are of their age and with their age they pass away. Yet some few are great enough to transcend the limitations of their age with a message for all time. Shining more with the light of God than with their own, the light they shed remains to inspire men to seek the things that are above and to guide their steps through the storms and darkness of life. Such a man, beyond all question, was Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Some of Bernard s directness and insight can be seen in a letter he wrote to a man who had just been designated a bishop, but whose past life showed little apparent qualification for such a demanding position. Bernard addressed him with a kind of blunt charity: It is laid down that we should love others as we love ourselves. But if you were to love others as you have hitherto loved yourself, I for one would not wish to be committed to your care. Msgr. David Hubba DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE IN IRAQ AND THE MIDDLE EAST TODAY, AUGUST The Bishops of the United States have called for a Day of Prayer for Peace in Iraq for this weekend to show our solidarity with the Christian people and other minority religious groups in Iraq who are suffering persecution at the hands of the Islamic militants of ISIS. Archbishop John J. Myers offers us a prayer written by the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Iraq, His Beatitude Louis Rafael Sako which we are encouraged to pray in solidarity with the victims of violence in Iraq, Syria, Israel and Gaza. Lord, the plight of our country is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we ask you Lord to spare our lives, and to grant us patience, and courage to continue our witness of Christian values with trust and hope. Lord, peace is the foundation of life; grant us the peace and stability that will enable us to live with each other without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy. Glory be to you forever. ANNULMENT INFORMATION SEPTEMBER 10 An Annulment Information Evening is scheduled for Wednesday, September 10 at the Archdiocesan Center, 171 Clifton Avenue, Newark, New Jersey. A staff member of the Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Newark will provide basic information about annulments; the requirements for annulments; and how to begin the process of petitioning for an annulment. There will be an opportunity for questions at the end of the session. This program is a weekly support group for children, grades 1-8, who are living in single-parent homes, or have families that are going through painful transitions. When something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. If a parent dies or a divorce occurs, not only do the parents grieve, but the children do also. Because of their age and short life experience children find it extremely difficult to verbalize those feelings. We have some very beautiful, sensitive, caring, trained adults who have said yes to helping these children put these feelings into words, work through their grief, build a stronger sense of self-esteem, and begin to accept what has taken place in the family. The program is free to any child who needs us. Sessions begin on September 30, 2014 at 7:15pm. To facilitate the book order we will need families to register as soon as possible.
