3 TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK A LABOR DAY REFLECTION The late Pope John Paul II canonized the Spanish priest St. Josemaría Escriva de Balaquer ( ) and admired him deeply. The key to the saint s spirituality is the great importance of ordinary work for the sanctification of each Christian and for the transformation of the world. In his book Christ Is Passing By, St. Josemaría writes that Work is part and parcel of man s life on earth. It involves effort, weariness, exhaustion: signs of the suffering and struggle which accompany human existence and which point to the reality of sin and the need for redemption. But in itself work is not a penalty or a curse or a punishment: those who speak of it that way have not understood Sacred Scripture properly. It is time for Christians to shout from the rooftops that work is a gift from God and that it makes no sense to classify men differently according to their occupation, as if some jobs were nobler than others. Work, all work, bears witness to the dignity of man, to his dominion over creation. It is an opportunity to develop one s personality. It is a bond of union with others, the way to support one s family, a means of aiding in the improvement of the society in which we live and in the progress of all humanity. Not only is work the background of man s life, it is a means and path of holiness. It is something to be sanctified and something which sanctifies. As we observe this Labor Day weekend and enjoy the relaxation of the summer s last holiday, may we also keep in mind the great importance of the work we do. It is something that is meant to bring us honor and sustenance and greater closeness to God. Msgr. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ GOOD BYE AND GOD BLESS We bid farewell to our parish Director of Operations, Heath Winborn, who has accepted a new position and will be moving to Chicago. In the three years that Heath has been with Saint Joseph, we have seen our parish move firmly into the 21st century. Much of what we are now so justifiably proud began and was fully implemented during Heath s tenure. A stroll around Saint Joseph s beautiful campus will give you a little insight into the remarkable achievements that have taken place in such a short period of time under Heath s direction. When you step into our upper church, you notice oak literature racks at the main doors, beautiful pew frontals and kneelers so worshippers in the front pew can now kneel to pray, new microphones, and seasonal worship aids that the parish is able to print on site. Moving downstairs to Mary s Chapel (in the lower church), you will hear a new sound system that was installed and see that the entire area has been repainted. Frequent flooding problems have been addressed, including the repair of a broken water pipe, thorough treatment for mold, installation of dehumidifiers, and the upgrading of the sump pump. Speaking of flooding issues, during Heath s time at Saint Joseph, our area experienced two hurricanes (including Super Storm Sandy) and several major snow storms. Heath s full time presence on campus enabled him to respond to emergencies as they arose and the parish experienced minimal disruptions and no serious flooding in the church or the rectory (which historically has had extensive water damage in the past). The next stop is the rectory which, besides functioning as living quarters for our priests, also houses our parish offices. Air conditioning and dehumidifiers have been installed in the lower level to provide usable office space for Religious Education (consolidating all staff in one building) and for the creation of a meeting room to be used by the various committees and ministries of the parish. The first floor offices have been updated and signage on the building has been improved. Crossing Elm Street to the lower school, you will discover that the entire building has now been brought up to code, with fire heads in all classrooms completely replaced and the fire panel box updated. Crucifixes have been hung in every classroom. The gymnasium floor and beams have been refinished and damaged window treatments in the gym and both schools classrooms replaced. A special classes wing has been established (with rooms for art, music, computer technology and a 4 school library) and a preschool wing the greenhouse ( where little scholars begin to blossom ) has been furnished and equipped. All computers in the lower school lab were replaced thanks to an arrangement made by Heath with St. Peter s Prep, internet wiring (to bring voice as well as data into every classroom) was updated and white boards with interactive projectors were installed. Heath was able to make additional technology improvements to all buildings with campus-wide WiFi capability and an IP phone system that utilizes the internet instead of the old phone lines, making our phone system cheaper and completely customizable. He enabled staff and school faculty to communicate with each other and school parents via , created our parish website, updated our school website, started both a school and parish newsletter and Facebook page, and worked with an artist to design school, parish and athletic association logos Due to Heath s efforts, Saint Joseph School has also gone green. The lower school building is one of the first area Catholic elementary schools to have solar panels installed on the roof, thereby reducing the building s electricity costs. Also, efficiency retrofits have been made to the building s boiler and timing thermostats have finally been installed to help control heating costs. When Heath arrived a short three years ago, the Parish Life Center on Grove Street (an historic building originally constructed in 1819 that has served our parish as a convent and a parish meeting place) was in danger of being condemned. Under Heath s direction it underwent a two year gut renovation that has brought it completely up to code and included major structural repairs, re-wiring, updated plumbing, and a new fire alarm system. The first floor has been beautifully restored to its original condition and has already hosted multiple parish receptions, an SJS alumni reunion and an art exhibit, as well as regular bible study classes, spiritual counseling and retreats, seasonal reflection groups, and our shawl ministry. An upstairs apartment that is restricted by code to serving as staff housing was also restored. In addition to on-going landscaping improvements, upgraded exterior lighting around campus and the restoration of Mary s fountain in Our Lady s Grotto next to the church, Heath has been committed to the preservation of our facilities, utilizing a maintenance staff that not only cleans all buildings but also provides security and coverage for safe access to all parish activities. More than 20,000 clergy, religious and lay people have received safe environment and sexual abuse awareness training. They also receive periodic renewal training. Similarly, about 20,000 clergy, religious and lay people have gone through criminal background checks prior to working or volunteering in our parishes and schools. In accord with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, allegations are sent to the Archdiocesan Review Board of lay professionals with extensive legal, law enforcement and clinical backgrounds. The archdiocese, in accord with a memorandum of understanding with prosecutors in Bergen, Hudson, Union and Essex counties, reports every allegation of sexual misconduct, regardless of when it may have taken place. The Review Board also reviews allegations at the same time if the person making the allegation wishes to meet with the board. Most do. Priests in ministry immediately step down from assignment when allegations are made. The archdiocese provides counseling and outreach to victims of abuse. Victims are invited to meet with clergy and lay officials. There is a full-time office dedicated to protecting children.

6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Luke 14:1,7-14. When we are little, we are taught by our parents the rules of etiquette (say et-i-kit). We are taught to be respectful and polite, to always say please and thank you. In today s Gospel, Jesus teaches us the rules of Christian etiquette how we should act as followers of Jesus Christ. When Jesus talks about where to sit when we are invited to a wedding reception, he is saying that we should think of others before ourselves. When he tells us to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind to dinner, he means that we should do kind things for people who are unable to repay us for our kindnesses. Jesus showed us how to behave by the way he lived. He did not consider himself first and important, even though he was the Son of God. He asks us to be kind to everyone, to help even those who might never be able to do anything for us. If we do, we will be living the way Jesus did. MISSION OF THE WEEK When you are playing with your friends, invite the boy or girl who is all alone to play with you. 6 Jesus teaches the rules of Christian etiquette.
