Henry s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the old religion in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called Bloody Mary for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called recusants, from a Latin word meaning refuse, since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim Recusancy as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Wesley William Burgos Layla Arianna Dalomba Evelyn Catherine MacKay Isabelle Alexandra Johnson WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION The Office of Marriage Preparation and Enrichment of the Diocese of Providence is sponsoring the ninth annual Wedding Anniversary Celebration on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD 1PM, at the Cathedral of SS. Peter & Paul, Providence. Married couples who are celebrating their 25th, 40th, 50th and over wedding anniversary in 2018 will be honored at this celebration. In order for the attendees to have their names and anniversary published in the Mass booklet, we must receive all forms by AUGUST 17TH. Registration forms are at the rectory or call Marie at to have one mailed. The Wedding Anniversary celebration will include Mass, renewal of marriage vows, and a personalized certificate for each couple. Following the Mass, the Office of Marriage Preparation and Enrichment will host a reception for the couples and their families. Bishop Thomas Tobin will be the main celebrant and homilist.
