2 Dear Friends, Religious Education Registration for Religious Education classes for the fall has begun! Online registration is available via the parish website under Religious Education. Please call us (302) if you have any questions. We begin our year on Sunday, September 23 rd, at 10am, with Family Day: parents and kids together in the hall for an activity, followed by time to meet the wonderful volunteer catechists who will be teaching your children this year. We are in need of several classroom assistants (adults who are willing to assist the teacher, work with students who need a little extra help, etc.). Is God whispering in your ear that YOU would be the perfect person to help His children learn more about Him? Give me a call; I would love to talk to you about this! Pastor s Notes Called by God Today s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the shepherd and a dresser of sycamores (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out two by two (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God destined us for adoption (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God s living word. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the old religion in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called Bloody Mary for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called recusants, from a Latin word meaning refuse, since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim Recusancy as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition. Cemetery Clean Up American Flags were removed, from all cemeteries. It was an honor to salute our heroes and your love ones! Those who pledged to the Annual Catholic Appeal this year will be receiving invoices for the July payment. We thank all who have contributed. Envelopes are still located in the church. Welcome to Fr. 3 Christ s compassion toward the sick and his many healings of every kind of infirmity are a resplendent sign that God has visited his people and that the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Jesus has the power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins; he has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; he is the physician the sick have need of. His compassion toward all who suffer goes so far that he identifies himself with them: I was sick and you visited me. His preferential love for the sick has not ceased through the centuries to draw the very special attention of Christians toward all those who suffer in body and soul. It is the source of tireless efforts to comfort them (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1503). The Sacrament of the Sick is not reserved solely for those who are dying. The sacrament gives the grace of the Holy Spirit to those who are sick. It strengthens their loved ones, and it also brings a measure of comfort to caregivers. A sick person may be anointed before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery. Elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. We encourage families to call the parish office when a loved one is hospitalized or is sick at home so proper pastoral visits and an anointing, if warranted, may be offered. If you would like to receive the Sacrament of the Sick by one of our priests, please call the parish office, we d be happy to assist you with this special request.
