3 The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima Part VIII Apparition of the Angel Story: SUMMER, 1916 Suddenly, we saw beside us the same figure, or rather Angel, as it seemed to me. What are you doing? Pray, pray very much! The most holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary have designs of mercy on you. Offer prayers and sacrifices constantly to the Most High. How are we to make sacrifices? I asked. Make of everything you can a sacrifice, and offer it to God as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners. You will thus draw down peace upon your country. I am its Angel Guardian, the Angel of Portugal. Above all, accept and bear with submission, the suffering which the Lord will send you. Comment: Above all, accept and bear with submission, the suffering which the Lord will send you. I will take this apart word by word. First above all: This is to be understood in the context of what the Angel is asking of the children to offer prayers and sacrifices to God. With this request the children will look for opportunities to offer sacrifices to God for the conversion of sinners. They will fast, mortify their bodies by thrashing their legs with nettles, they will even tie a rough rope type cord tightly around their waist. Our Lady will eventually tell the children that God is pleased with their sacrifices, but that He does not want them to sleep with the cord on. God knows best for us and this is why, above all, what is most beneficial and effective is not the penance and sacrifices we choose for ourselves, but what God chooses. Accept and bear with submission: This is true for all of us, not just the children of Fatima. They would choose extraordinary ways of offering sacrifices to God that would put most priests and religious to shame; however it should be understood in the context of the apparitions and extraordinary grace that they would receive, and most of us have not received. However, the sufferings that come our way, those that are not our deliberate choice of penance and sacrifices, are always what is to be offered to God. Why not? We do not suffer less by not offering them nor do we suffer more by offering them. Why suffer them in vain? Make use of our suffering and unite it with that of Jesus s suffering. Of course there are many sufferings we can alleviate in our life. If I have a headache I can take a couple of Advil. While there is nothing wrong with this, in the meantime, while I endure the headache, I can offer it to God. The children responding to the request of the Angel will not seek to alleviate their sufferings. They will bear them with submission. We too may do so, but we should have a spiritual director to guide us. A good rule of thumb is that if we can bear with submission the sufferings God sends us without complaint and making everyone around us endure it vicariously through us, then it might be truly beneficial. If we endure with submission our sufferings but do so by being miserable and discouraged, then they benefit no one. The suffering which the Lord will send you: Why would the Lord send us suffering? Why would God want us to suffer, let alone be the cause of our suffering? God is not the cause of suffering, sin is the cause of suffering. If there were no sin, there would be no suffering. God s love and grace may affect suffering in our lives (here on earth and for souls in purgatory), but that same love and grace would be to the effect of our beatitude and glory (souls in heaven) if we had not sinned. Because God s love, mercy and grace stand in opposition to our sins that it is a cause of suffering and purification, if we allow it. If we reject it and resist it (God s love, mercy and grace), our suffering is greater and our purification is prevented. If we die in this state, then our suffering is eternal. God s will is distinguished by His permissive will and His direct will. The direct will of God is always good. There can be no evil in it. God s permissive will is rooted in love, a love that will never force us to be good and therefore permits us to do evil, with all its consequences. God s permissive will allowed immense suffering to come by way of the children, not so much for their purification (although true to a the degree of their need) but for the salvation of others. God does not need this. He wills it. Remember, He chose it for Himself in the person of Jesus Christ who suffered for our Salvation. In His Divine Love, He invites us to be united in that suffering and we do so each time we accept and bear with submission the sufferings that God permits to come our way. In Jesus and Mary,
