NEW TIME: STATIONS OF CROSS Stations of the Cross take place every Friday during Lent except Good Friday at 7:30 pm in the Upper Church. LENTEN PENANCE SERVICE MARCH 9 Saint Joseph Parish will join with St. Peter the Apostle Parish to have a joint Penance Service on Wednesday, March 9 at 7:30 pm at St. Peter s Church (445 Fifth Ave., River Edge, NJ). The priests of both parishes will be in attendance. Come celebrate the sacrament of forgiveness in this Jubilee Year of Mercy as we prepare for Easter. INDIVIDUAL CONFESSIONS Individual confessions will also be heard at Saint Joseph Church every Saturday before Easter (except Holy Saturday) from 4:00-5:00 pm in the Reconciliation Room in the Upper Church (near the main entrance). EUCHARISTIC ADORATION MARCH 2 Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Wednesday, March 2 in Mary s Chapel in the lower church from 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The Legion of Mary invites you to attend. NO NOVENA ON MARCH 14 Because of the Parish Mission, the Miraculous Medal Novena celebrated every Monday evening at Saint Joseph will not be held on March 14. 2

3 Kearny, NJ, is named for General Philip Kearny, son of a wealthy family who had an estate in the neighborhood in which the Archdiocese operates a youth center where our Confirmation candidates have been attending their retreats to help prepare them for the sacrament. General Kearny, who was known for his aggressive tactics and personal bravery, died a hero in an early battle of the Civil War. The Army named a fort in Wyoming after him, one of several in the Powder River country that guarded the Bozeman Trail, the chief pathway to the Montana gold mines. The building of these forts angered the Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indians, who launched a series of attacks that became known, after their leader, as Red Cloud s War ( ), the only sustained one against the United States that the Indians won. Its most notable incident was the annihilation by the Sioux of an 80-man force led by a brash Captain, William Fetterman, who had boasted that he could ride through the whole Sioux nation with that many men. Fetterman was sent to rescue soldiers assigned to gather wood for Fort Phil Kearny. Disobeying orders not to cross a nearby ridge, he fell for a Sioux ambush, getting carried away when some Sioux, to lure him into their trap, began to run, while also taunting the troops with English-spoken insults and rude bodily gestures better not described in a church bulletin. Although a treaty affirmed the Indians right to permanent possessions of the lands at stake, their victory lasted only eight years, as the pressure of increasing numbers of new settlers and miners convinced the government that the tribes had to relinquish their lands. This led to Custer s Last Stand and the eventual forcing of the Indians onto reservations, one of which was named for Red Cloud, who had come to see the inevitable and reluctantly led his Oglalas into reservation life. St. Katharine Drexel ( ), the second native-born United States citizen to be canonized, became a friend of Red Cloud years after the Indian wars. Her life is greatly interesting and uplifting. She came from one of the wealthiest and most prominent families in the country. Her father, Francis Drexel, was an enormously successful international banker. Katharine s mother died when Katharine was only a few weeks old. Her father then married Emma Bouvier. Both were splendid Catholic parents for Katharine and her two sisters. Francis, who prayed for half an hour every day, attended Masses daily and (continued above) THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT~ FEBRUARY 28, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK 3 contributed generously to charities, passed these habits on to his children. And Emma was a living example of charity. She ran a kind of welfare agency from her home, opening its doors to the poor two or three days a week. People in need came for food, clothing and shoes. She also paid the rent for 150 impoverished families When Francis and Emma died within a short time of each other, while Katharine was still in her thirties, Katharine and her sisters became the beneficiaries of a $14 million trust, a huge sum for that time. Its investment income saw to it that they could live the rest of their lives in comfort, with absolutely no material worries. The terms of the trust provided for its income to go to the surviving sisters upon their individual deaths, and Katharine outlived the others by many years, dying at age 96. All the Drexels were charitable, but Katharine was a special case. Through her friendship with her spiritual director, Bishop John O Hara (the first bishop of Omaha), she was guided to become a religious sister but one who interacted with the world, not a contemplative nun, which was her initial desire (both for temperamental reasons and because, back then, contemplatives could receive communion daily while active sisters could only do so three times a week). It was through Bishop O Hara that Katharine met Red Cloud. And on a visit to Rome, she met Pope Leo XIII in a private audience and urged him to send priests to work among the Indians. He replied to her, Why don t you become a missionary. which is what she did. Katharine underwent formation for religious life in Pennsylvania, then started the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, who dedicated their lives to serving Indians and African Americans. Among her foundations in the decades that followed were 40 mission centers, twelve schools for Indian children, and 50 schools for Blacks, including Xavier University in New Orleans, the first college for African American Catholics. At times she had to buy the land for them through third parties so the sellers would not refuse the transactions because of prejudice. In all, Katharine Drexel spent an estimated $20 million on her good works, more than $1,000 a day. And none of the money went to her religious community, which lived in poverty and supported itself by seeking alms. For the final twenty years of her life, following a heart attack, Katharine retired to a life of prayer, which had been her wish all along. St. John Paul II canonized her in Msgr. David Hubba

Their all-volunteer staff provides help for single first-time mothers and their babies including subsidies for housing, daycare, education and counseling. Volunteers from New Hope will be at all the doors of our church next weekend to answer any questions and to accept any donations. An indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven...which the follower of Christ...under certain determined conditions acquires through the intervention of the Church. What are the requirements? To gain this indulgence, the faithful must: 1. Be baptized and in the state of grace (free from mortal sin) at the time you pass through the Holy Door. 2.
