2 astor s Corner with Father Denis A couple of weeks ago the media was filled with stories about the Holy Father calling for a meeting in Rome of all the heads of the Bishops Conferences around the globe. As many know, our own Archbishop, Cardinal Cupich, was asked by the Pope to head up the team that organized that meeting. The media was awash in stories speculating whether it would accomplish anything, quoting the voices of those loudly protesting the episcopal cover-up of sex abuse cases and calling for everything from total overhaul of the priesthood to the Pope s resignation. It all made for good sound bites and sold papers. Many speculated that nothing would happen beyond a few trite expressions of sorrow. Last Tuesday, at the Presbyteral Council meeting the Cardinal told us the Holy Father had two goals for the Rome meeting: ownership of the issue by all the bishops around the world and some concrete steps to address the issue. Cardinal Cupich told us he witnessed radical conversion among the bishops, including the curia, who thought this issue was not happening in their part of the world. This conversion came thanks to the witness of 5 people from across the globe telling their stories of the abuse and about the cover-up they personally experienced. One man in particular had a massive impact. He is a professional musician playing violin with a renowned orchestra. He played for the bishops, moving them with his music. Then he told his story. The impact, the Cardinal said, was visible. Many who declared that the issue was not their concern but something Europe and the United States had to deal with, were converted on the spot. Exposure to people who had suffered brought the bishops face to face with the reality that is found all over the globe - even in their backyard. Many critics still say nothing was accomplished. Aside from the doubting Thomases being converted, the meeting has set in motion a handbook that will be coming out soon, laying out how bishops are to handle accusations against priests. This will be a worldwide approach. In addition, Rome is looking into how the issue can be incorporated into Canon Law. These are concrete steps that will globalize how the Church deals with accused priests and bishops who cover up the incidents. The Cardinal himself was able to present a paper detailing his proposal of how to deal with bishops. He has proposed that the Metropolitan Bishop (Archbishops) be empowered to deal with the misconduct of bishops of the province. Currently the Archbishops can show up in any diocese of a province (ours is the state of Illinois) to deal with a situation in Canon Law. However, that power does not include sexual abuse cases. Cardinal Cupich s proposal is to change the Law to include sexual misconduct. He also has called for a lay review board to deal with bishop misconduct. One hundred and twenty countries from around the world have already submitted, or are in the process of submitting, proposed guidelines for dealing with sex abuse by clergy, which makes this a global issue. While these changes may seem rather tame to some, they are major steps by the international Church. Cardinal Cupich pointed out that the Holy Father s job is to keep everyone together, not drive people apart. To accomplish this, he has to move slowly, but deliberately. There s the old adage: Rome wasn t built in a day. We can paraphrase that: Rome isn t changed in a day. Still, producing a handbook, adding to Canon Law and extending the power of the Metropolitan bishop are quite significant accomplishments from a four day meeting. The Cardinal has been moving about the Archdiocese with a series of Listening Sessions that allows people to express their frustrations, hurts and anger with regard to this issue. He said that he always asks the question, What are we not doing but should be doing? What he s learned is that many people simply don t know what the Church of the Archdiocese is doing and has been doing for a long while. He lets folks know exactly what we ve been doing and lets them know we can t depend on the media to inform us of all that s being done. The Cardinal referred to the report of the Attorney General s office which said that we hadn t reported all cases. Since 2002, every case within the Archdiocese has been reported to the authorities and, in the case of the accusation being found to be true, the name of the priest has been published. The only time a name has been withheld is because the accusation was made after the man died. The reason is due process cannot be served if the accused person can t defend himself. That said, the accuser is still given the pastoral attention offered to any victim. This theme of people, including the media, making statements without knowing all the facts is one the Cardinal, as well as other members of the Archdiocese, have been saying for a while now. Granted, the scandal can rouse some hard feelings, but before we freely go about making statements about what the Archdiocese has or has not done, we need to check the facts. People s lives are affected by this, including the bishops, priests and victims. We need to be careful before we set off rumors rooted only in our own frustration and anger. The Church, both universal and local, needs to face this ugly reality and respond honestly, compassionately and with a determination to change. Our Archdiocese has been doing this since the turn of the century. Lent is the season for taking a long hard look at ourselves. We are the People of God, the Body of Christ. How well have we been living up to that? The atrocious behavior we have heard about and seen plastered over the media definitely show us something s wrong and needs to change. Before trying to dislodge the beam in another s eye, let s look first to the specks in our own. With God s help we can atone for our sins and allow the love of God to wash over us and heal our wounds. Then we can get to work on improving our Church.
