2 astor s Corner with Father Denis I received this story many years ago from a friend. During this season of storytelling, I pass it on to you as a nice story for the kids, but also as something that might put presents into a sharper perspective. Once there were three trees on a hill in a wood. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carvings and everyone would see the beauty. Then the second tree said, Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull. Finally, the third tree said, I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill, look up to my branches and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember me. After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, This looks like a strong tree. I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter, and he began to cut it down. The tree was happy because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest. At the second tree a woodsman said, This looks like a strong tree. I should be able to sell it to the shipyard. The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship. When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if they cut him down his dreams would not come true. The years went by and the trees forgot about their dreams. The one day a man and a woman came into the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn t think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man and he stood and said, Peace! and the storm stopped. At this time the tree knew that it had carried the king of kings in its boat. Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of the hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible because Jesus had been crucified on it. The moral of this story is that when things don t seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in him, he will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don t always know what God s plans are for us. We just know that his ways are not our ways, but his ways are always best. A baby, awesome as he may be, may not be the gift we re looking for from God, but the peace of mind and heart that grown up child can bring is exactly what we long for. Fr. Denis Condon One of the woodsmen said, I don t need anything special from my tree so I ll take this one and he cut it down. When the first tree arrived at the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings and queens had come to an end. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark.

Roughly 94 percent of donations to the RFR aid elder religious, with the remainder used to administer and promote the appeal. Since 1989, more than $775 million has been distributed to support the day-to-day care of elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. An additional $91 million has been allocated toward self-help projects initiated by religious communities, including collaborative healthcare facilities. In addition to direct financial assistance, proceeds from the annual appeal underwrite educational programming, services, and resources that enable religious communities to evaluate and prepare for long-term retirement needs. Support from the Retirement Fund for Religious helps religious communities care for senior members while continuing important ministries to the People of God. Page 3

Beginning on Mon., Dec. 3rd, we will pray the rosary in Spanish each weekday evening in St. Barbara Church at 7pm and following the 12:30pm Sunday Spanish Mass. These days of prayer will prepare us for he celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12th with the singing of Las Mañanitas (a traditional Mexican birthday song) at 5am, a Mass at 6am, and the Mass of the Roses at 7:30pm. Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe for Justice Most merciful mother, you came to tell us of your compassion through St. Juan Diego, whom you called the littlest and dearest of your sons. Give your strength and protection to all who live in poverty today, especially the young, elderly, and vulnerable. Plead for them to the Father, that they might experience the Divine Love tangibly in their daily lives, and that all who work for justice on behalf of the poor might grow in fortitude and humility. In these ways, manifest your charity and concern in our lives, that the weeping and humanity may be heard, and all our suffering, pain and misfortune may be filled with divine comfort and healing. May we always know the peace of being in the cradle of your arms, and bring us safely home to your son, Jesus. Amen.

5 Altar Servers Schedule You should have received the with Christmas season dates. Remember that it is your responsibility to find subs if you are unable to serve. Altar Servers Training If you are in fifth grade or older and would like to be a part of the important ministry of altar server, please contact Karyn Miller. Youth Choirs Teen Choir SLM Teen Choir is open to high school and college students, as well as 7th and 8th graders who are also in SLM Children's Choir. The choir usually sings at 9:30 on the second Sunday of the month (with a few exceptions). We meet for donuts in the Marillac Room at 8 AM, and rehearse until the 9:30 Mass. If you would like to join us, we will be joining the Children s Choir at the 5:30 Mass on Christmas Eve. There will be a rehearsal and Christmas party on Saturday, December 22. Contact Karyn Miller if you would like to sing! Instrumentalists are welcome as well--we would especially welcome percussionists, guitar and ukulele players! Or sign up through Google Forms: Youth Christmas Choir Our combined youth choirs will be singing at the 5:30 Family Mass on Christmas Eve, and at our Advent Lessons and Carols service on Saturday evening, December 16. The Christmas Eve choir is open to grades 1 through college.. Rehearsals are Thursdays, December 13 and 20, from 3:30-5:00 P.M., and Saturday, December 22, from 11:00-1:00 P.M. (pizza included on Saturday!). If you would like to participate in either of these wonderful services, please contact Karyn Miller. Christmas Eve Family Mass--Attention Angels & Shepherds! If you are in Kindergarten through grade 8 and would like to participate in our Family Mass on Christmas Eve, please come to the first rehearsal on Saturday, December 15, at 12:00 noon in church. Children are needed to act out the Christmas Gospel and to proclaim the readings and lead the prayers of the faithful. See you on December 15! 6 Pre-Cana Marriage Prep Are you planning on getting married in the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago within the next year? One of the requirements is to attend Pre-Cana marriage preparation. One option is to attend a one-on-one Pre-Cana with Deacon Dave and Jane Brencic here at St. Louise de Marillac. We meet for two two-hour sessions and cover topics such as communication, how to have an argument, finances and budgeting, having children, and faith in marriage. The fee is $50 and goes to the parish to buy materials.
