2 Saint Clare of Assisi Feast Day: August 11 Overtime, other women joined them, wanting to also be brides of Jesus and live with no money. They became known at the Poor Ladies of San Damiano. They all lived a simple life of austerity, seclusion from the world, and poverty, according to a Rule which Francis gave them as a Second Order. St. Clare and her sisters wore no shoes, ate no meat, lived in a poor house, and kept silent most of the time. Their lives consisted of manual labor and prayer. Yet, they were very happy, because Our Lord was close to them all of the time. By 1216, Clare became the abbess of San Damiano. Ten years after Claire s death, the order became known as the Order of Saint Clare. St. Clare of Assisi was born in Assisi on July 16, 1193, as Chiara Offreduccio, the beautiful eldest daughter of Favorino Sciffi, Count of Sasso-Rosso and his wife Ortolana. Her father was a wealthy representative of an ancient Roman family and her mother was a very devout woman belonging to the noble family of Fiumi. Miracles of St. Clare. In 1241, the Saracens attacked the city of Assisi. When they approached to attack the convent, St. Clare took the Blessed Sacrament in her hands. At that very moment, the Saracens experienced such a terrible wave of fear that they fled petrified. As a young girl, Clare dedicate herself to prayer. At 18 years old, she heard St. Francis of Assisi preach during a Lenten service and asked him to help her live according to the Gospel. On Palm Sunday in 1212, Clare left her father s home and went to the chapel to meet with Francis. Clare s hair was cut off and she was given a plain robe and veil in exchange for her rich gown. When they had one bread so that 50 sisters could eat, St. Clare blessed the bread and sent one half to the Friars and the other half she distributed amongst the sisters. This half bread multiplied so that it was enough for all to eat. St. Clare is considered to be the patron saint of eye diseases, goldsmiths, laundry and television. Clare joined the convent of the Benedictine nuns of San Paulo, under Francis orders. When her father found her and attempted to force her back into his home, she refused and professed that she would have no other husband than Jesus Christ. In order to give her the greater solitude she desired, Francis sent Clare to Sant Angelo, another Benedictine nuns monastery. Clare s sister Catarina, who took the name Agnes, joined her at this monastery. The two remained there until a separate dwelling was built for them next to the church of San Damiano. But why is Clare the patroness of television? One Christmas Eve, Clare was so sick that she could not get out of bed even to go to Mass. While the other sisters were on their way to mass, she stayed in bed praying so she could take part in the mass with her prayer. Just then, the Lord granted her a miraculous vision, and she was able to se the Mass, even though she was far away from where it was happening, as if it were taking place right in her own bedroom. In 1958, when Pope Pius XII was trying to find a saint to name as patron for the marvelous new invention called television, he recalled this incident in the life of St. Clare. Since television is Greek for vision from afar, Clare was chosen as its patroness.

We all need moments of silence to reflect on what we value and believe about life. Tuning out the noisy world helps people develop the ability to reflect and grow. Silence also facilitates mental prayer at a time when so many are in need of rediscovering it. We need the sacred to help lead the faithful into greater silence, particularly as the world relentlessly gives us noise. Making time for Eucharistic adoration gives us a positive stillness that will restore us. Such stillness a time of recollection, giving us an inward peace, allowing us to draw breath and rediscover the one thing necessary, which we have forgotten. submitted by Marylee Powderly.
