2 MUSINGS FROM THE DEACON CAVE I am so Tired of Being Ordinary! It is unusual for us to have so many weeks of Ordinary Time in between the Christmas season and Lent. This week we will celebrate Ash Wednesday and mark the beginning of our Lenten season. It is a time for us to prepare our minds and hearts for the coming of the risen Lord at Easter. It is a season focused on prayer, fasting, and giving. Some may ask why we need a special time to focus on these things shouldn t we be doing them all the time? Yes! Part of our Christian lives should be a constant practice of prayer, fasting, and giving; but, just like our daily lives can become very familiar and ordinary, our spiritual life can become familiar and ordinary, and we can just go through the motions. Lent gives us some time to supercharge our spiritual practices so that we don t fall into the trap of being just good enough. We are made for so much more than being ordinary! We are made to be extraordinary in our love of Jesus and love of one another. Lent gives us the time to focus on being extraordinary. I am so tired of being ordinary are you? Deacon Mike All are invited to St. Bernard Parish on Ash Wednesday, March 6. We are offering two Masses, and 6:00 pm. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. It is a day of fasting and abstinence. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal and abstaining from meat. We have been so tremendously blessed by Father Amal s love of the Lord; joyful spirit; his presence, teachings and preaching...the list could go on and on. Look no further than FORMED and the nine-part study on The Beatitudes which are the heart of Jesus s preaching. How often do we reflect on these blessings given to us by Jesus? Father Emil Kapaun, 2 months before being sent to the Korean War, gave reflections of the Beatitudes, having no idea they would be the foreshadowing of how he would pour out his own life for his men. Explore the Beatitudes one by one. As Father Amal said he wasn t going to say goodbye; rather, until we meet again. The Beatitudes are our GUIDEPOSTS on our own journey to our Heavenly blessing. Submitted weekly by a St. Bernard Parishioner WITH GRATITUDE Scripture tells us to be thankful in everything, in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). This past weekend was simply amazing at our Parish. Parishioners, Parish Youth, Staff, Parish Committees, Deacons, Finance and Parish Councils came together in a very short amount of time to celebrate Father Amal. THANK YOU to each one of you. Much gratitude for those who provided support in the unplanned circumstances: the person who at the last minute had to go purchase additional wine and had a hard time getting back in the Church due to locked doors, the person who was plowing the Parish parking lot as the storm moved through the area, the person who needed to clean the floor at the end of the celebrations, the person who suggested to make the unfortunate announcement about the car accident on Hwy 41, the person who recommended to raise our hands as empty spots were cleared at tables so many of us could stay together in the Hall, the people who courteously had to move to the Activity Center-THANK YOU. 5 LENT 2019 Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent; our season of fasting, praying, and almsgiving. This is a special time to sharpen the focus of our spiritual life and unite our hearts with Jesus. Mass Times: Wednesday, March 6, and 6:00 pm Follow Me, Lenten Bible Study Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John Friday Mornings Beginning March 8 9:00 am in our Small Group Room Wednesday Afternoons Beginning March 13 1:15 pm in our Small Group Room (After Stations; please bring a lunch) Evenings of Adoration Holy Hours will take place each Monday night during Lent from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm in our Church. He desires to forgive us and bring us healing and wholeness. Join us for the Sacrament of Reconciliation at St. Bernard Parish on Thursday, March 28, 6:00 pm. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered every Saturday at 3:00 pm (before the 4:30 pm Mass). Taize` Prayer Service Evening-Friday, April 5 5:30 pm-6:20 pm-soup Dinner in our Parish Hall 6:30 pm-7:30 pm-taize` Prayer Service in our Church Taize` Prayer is an ecumenical form of prayer that originated in the small town of Taize`, France in It is an hour-long meditative candlelight service that centers around music, prayer, scripture and silence. Enter into a time of quiet and solitude in the midst of your busy life. An important part of the Taize` experience is the singing of simple meditative songs that were developed for the prayer service.
