2 astor s Corner with Father Denis and magi arrived from the east. Who were these magi? Somewhere during the Middle Ages these men became known as kings even though that s not in the Gospels. Wise Men more accurately identifies who these men were. Magi were learned men, scholars if you will, men who in today s world might be called scientists. Granted, 2,000 years ago there was no science in the way we understand it but men such as the magi were respected for their knowledge. The Wise Men who appear in St. Matthew s Gospel were from the east, probably somewhere in the area of Iraq or Iran. They were probably Zoroastrians by faith and astrologers by profession. Today we might call them natural scientists or astronomers. They were involved in the study of Nature, especially the stars. They spotted something in Nature that had never been there before and, as any good scientist, they were curious. When we meet the 3 Magi in the Gospel, they are entering Jerusalem looking for help to find the new king of the Jews because they saw his star. It s a huge jump from spotting something in the night sky that hadn t been there before to it being the star of the new king of the Jews. I m sure the new star didn t come with an identification tag for the new king of the Jews. They had to figure out the connection which would take some work. Aside from figuring out what the star was about, there had to be something that made them want to see this child. Yes, the phenomenon of a new star is exciting, but why should these men, who were not Jews either by birth or by faith, want to make a long and dangerous trek across the wasteland just to see a baby? Again, there had to be something more than mere curiosity that would tempt respected men to make that journey. And bring expensive gifts, to boot! What were they thinking? At this point we need to take a step back. Gospels are not history as we understand that term. All that I just wrote is speculation based on our experiences, based on the presupposition that this story actually happened. Gospels are faith statements and not historical records. St. Matthew was trying to teach something about the Lord, not record actual events. St. Matthew wrote his Gospel in the early 70 s A.D. If Jesus died at 33, the Magi story would have had to happen about 70 years before St. Matthew wrote about it. So he wasn t there. Granted, it may have been a story passed down through the years, but it also may have been a story Matthew made up to get a point across. If that s the case, what s the point? The Magi were gentiles, that is, not Jewish. They did not share the faith in the one God, Yahweh; their god was probably Ahura Mazda. Why would they care about what was happening to the Jews? It had nothing to do with them. Did they become Jews as a result of this visit? No. So why would they even think of making this journey? What was the epiphany (sudden insight) they experienced? And why would the God of Israel, through the study of astronomy, entice 3 pagan scholars to make a long arduous journey to find the new-born king of the Jews? Keep in mind Jesus is born to lower class folks. He had little chance of seeing the throne, let alone sit on it. The more we think about it, this story has little chance of being an historical reality. So, what s St. Matthew trying to teach us? Modern scripture scholars tell us that St. Matthew was a Jew writing for a Jewish-Christian community. He opens his gospel with a genealogy stretching back to Abraham to prove Jesus is a descendant of Abraham (a Jew) and of David (the promised Messiah), but not necessarily what they presumed the Messiah would be like or what he d do. St. Matthew makes many references to the Jewish Torah and to the Prophets to help his community understand how Jesus is the long awaited Messiah. Within that context, we may make sense of the visit of the Magi. At the time of Jesus birth, the Jewish nation was a conquered people, part of the Roman Empire. They were an occupied nation complete with Jewish collaborators whom most Jews detested. The expectation of such people would, understandably, be for a Messiah who would lead the nation to throw off the yoke of Rome and re-establish the Kingdom of David. But, that s not what they got. Through the study of nature, Yahweh leads gentiles to the Lord! The Messiah was for the entire world, not just the nation of Israel. We need to remind ourselves of this reality. Jesus, and the salvation he brings, is not just for Roman Catholics or just for Christians as a whole. As Savior, Jesus is for every man, woman and child on the planet regardless of their color, their language, their religion or their culture. Remember the Great Commission : Go, make disciples of all nations. As followers of Jesus, that s our job. Anything might entice people to set out on the journey to find the Lord. We, like the folks in Jerusalem, are there to assist them to find the Lord. That is Matthew s point. Fr. Denis Condon

In 1966, Spred was established as an agency of the Archdiocese of Chicago. With this formal recognition it became possible to plan for the replication of Spred ministry in parishes. The goal being to make it possible for each parish to welcome persons with developmental disabilities into a Spred group where they would become prepared to participate in the liturgical life of their parish. Spred groups are base communities whose goal is integration into the larger community of worship. Weekly Offertory The Weekly Offertory summary will resume next week Contribution Statements Parishioners who have contributed at least $250, in calendar year 2018, will automatically receive a statement. Parishioners who did not contribute at this level, and still would like to receive a statement, should call the rectory with their envelope number. Contribution envelopes for 2018, received after December 31, 2018, will be reflected as a 2019 fund contribution. Statements will be mailed after January 15th. Food Pantry Items We are collecting on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Grief Support Gathering At Hitzeman Funeral Home on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Through these events, Hitzeman has found that they can assist the families they serve through the fog of emotions and despair. Grief is a natural reaction to the loss of a loved one. The facilitator is Grief counselor Addie Anderson, LCPC. The McDonalds gift certificates were greatly appreciated by our guests. They give a little bit of freedom and independence enabling them to get a meal anytime they want. The Target and Walmart gift cards are extremely useful in providing items they could not ordinarily afford. (a $35 card helped purchase a pair of work boots for a man who just got a job). You never know what impact your act of generosity can have on someone! 5 Just5Days Four middle school students have signed up to go on next summer's service trip, Just5Days. Please pray for them next weekend, as they attend the Archdiocese of Chicago Youth Rally and Mass for Life, and the Chicago Walk for Life. Altar Servers Schedule The February SignUp Genius will be posted this week. Please sign up for 2-3 Masses, and remember that it is your responsibility to find subs if you are unable to serve for a Mass for which you are scheduled. Altar Servers Training If you are in fifth grade or older and would like to be a part of the important ministry of altar server, please contact Karyn Miller. Training will begin later in January. Youth Choirs Teen Choir SLM Teen Choir is open to high school and college students, as well as 7th and 8th graders who are also in SLM Children's Choir. The choir usually sings at 9:30 on the second Sunday of the month, but in February we will be singing again on February 10. We will meet for donuts in the Marillac Room at 8 AM, and rehearse until the 9:30 Mass. If you would like to join us, contact Karyn Miller. Instrumentalists are welcome as well--we would especially welcome percussionists, guitar and ukulele players! Children's Choir It's not too late to join our Children's Choir!
