2 From time to time we all need to take a moment to remember those who have worked well with us and for us. Each year the Archbishop together with all the Auxiliary Bishops wish to publicly acknowledge such people at the cathedral through the Christifidelis Award. This award not only allows the Archbishop and each Episcopal Vicar to recognize the ministry of the people of the Archdiocese, but also allows each parish to do the same. We have been acknowledging such men and women of our parish for the past several years and their names are on a plaque hanging on the wall in the narthex just under the monitor. I am very happy to add Pat Thorburn to those names this year. The write-up in the handbook presented to all the participants at the Award ceremony reads as follows: Patrick has headed the BEDS program for the past 15 years, coordinated RENEW for 12 years and has been a Mass Coordinator for at least 7 years. He is self-effacing, quiet and a servant of our people. Pat and the other Christifidelis Award winners represent all the people of our parish who serve others, some from behind the scenes. They are signs of the presence of the Holy Spirit among us and we should be grateful to all of our brothers and sisters who give of their time and talent for the sake of us all. Turning to the more mundane parts of parish life, the parking lot nears completion. Talk about under the wire! With the temps bungee jumping and the asphalt plants beginning to close because of the weather, we have finished the parking lot just in time. I have to admit I have lost sleep over this. Praise God, it s done almost. As I brought to your attention, during the process of constructing the parking lot we discovered a leak in the pipe that brings the hot water into the church to heat it. For a while I thought it was the time to sever the church connection with the boilers in the school building, giving the church an independent process of heating. As attractive as that ideas was, I had to face the reality that we did not have the money to accomplish it. To install a heating system for the church would have cost us $230,000 plus. We needed to install a separate gas line into the church for the proposed boilers and the HVAC units on the roof. We are still waiting for that to happen. But the reality is that we do not have $230,000. If you recall, I mentioned at the beginning of this project that all of our available monies were going into the parking lot and new kitchen. The leaking pipe was an unpleasant surprise. As much as I didn t want to, I decided to scratch the plans for the new heating system and repair the system we have. While this repair costs much less than a whole new system, it has still added $45,000 to the overall costs. The parish financial position of the parish is now precarious. On the bright side, the generosity of our people lifts my spirit. Several people have donated sizable amounts to the project, including one donation of $10,000. God bless these people. I believe we can put ourselves back on our financial feet if we all give what we can when we can. A donation to the Capital Improvement of $5 a month is just as important as the large donations those who could afford it have made. In fact, the small contributions will in the long rum make all the difference. Perhaps if we use the first Sunday of every month as our Capital Improvement Sunday, we can help inch to our goal. If we all can add a couple of bucks to the Capital Improvement line of our first-of-the-month donation, we can restock our accounts sooner. Thank you all for your patience during this construction and with me as I stumbled through this project. By God s grace and the prayers of St. Louise we shall achieve our goal. Father Denis Page 2

This year s trip will be on Thursday, November 30 th, Transportation will be by bus, and the price of transportation will be determined by the number of participants. The bus will board at the rectory at 10:00 AM and will return by 3:00 PM. Shop for handmade, one-of-a-kind gifts from Germany and Europe. Enjoy German food and drink in a winter wonderland setting. The cost of lunch and any items purchased are not included. If you have questions or need help, call our Rectory at or Marian Shrine Pilgrimage A pilgrimage to Marian Shrines in Fatima and Lourdes will be hosted by the Office of the Diaconate in conjunction with Ami Travel. The trip will be held April 15-25, 2018 and will be hosted by Deacon Richard Hudzik, Deacon Dave Brencic and Fr. Chuck Faso, OFM. In addition to the Marian sites, there will be stops at sites made famous by St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross and St. Ignatius of Loyola. All deacons, wives, parishioners, family and friends are invited to join as we deepen our faith, travel with others, attend daily Mass and learn about some of the Catholic Church s greatest saints. The cost is $3,495 per person and includes roundtrip airfare, 4-star hotel accommodations, buffet breakfasts and eight dinners. There is a supplement charge for single rooms and there are additional charges for taxes, tips and a fuel surcharge. This schedule will include the Christmas masses. If there are any dates that you are unavailable or if you have preferences for serving at the Christmas and New Year s masses, it is important that you let us know as soon as possible. Sign-up sheets will also be available in the Gathering Room. We will do our best to honor all requests; however, if we are not notified of your preferences, you will be randomly scheduled. Youth Ministry Board Meeting If you are interested in helping plan activities for junior and senior high school students in our parish, attend our next board meeting at 6:30 on December 1. Just5Days Middle School Service Trip St. Louise de Marillac Parish is very excited to again be participating in the Just5Days program this summer, a summer service program designed just for middle schoolers in grades 7-9 (next school year). Christmas Lock-In Our annual Christmas Lock-In will be December Theme and details will be announced the first week of December! Watch for it! Coming soon! Hunger Banquet: January date TBA The CWO and Girl Scouts are hosting their Annual Coat Drive. Specially marked boxes will be located in the back of church and outside the school office for your donations. Please only donate gently worn and clean coats. We can accept hats, scarves and gloves at this time as well. Other items can be placed in the St Vincent de Paul box outside the Colonnade Room doors.
