2 astor s Corner with Father Denis The world s going to hell in a hand basket. I ve heard that line numerous times, but these days it seems truer than ever. Even a brief glance at the daily headlines shows us a world spinning out of control. Look at the ads for the governor s race. The candidates fling mud at each other rather than telling us exactly what they are going to do to improve the lives of Illinois people. On the national level Congress has reduced itself to a pit bull fight, totally out of control. We have the second Speaker of the House in a row resigning not only from the Speaker s position, but from Congress as a whole! And truth has become a soccer ball for everyone to kick around, recalling Pilot s cynical response to Jesus: Truth? What is that? Truth has morphed into a synonym for personal opinion. In the Middle East and internationally, wars hail down death and horror, while exploiters rake in million on munitions sales. Drug cartels grow fat on the misery of addicts. Russia and the US are once again in a wrestling match for world dominance, with both keeping a close eye on China. Africa seems overshadowed by upheaval and political corruption; Mexico engages in a civil war between the government and the drug lords. Lord only knows what s going on South America. On a people level immigration has us stymied. Again the question is what is the truth (refer to the above). Without the sure footing of objective truth we have no foundation for anything. Sure there s scientific truth (except for the Flat Earth Society or those who believe the trip to the moon was a Hollywood stunt), but that can t go beyond material reality. And how can religion proclaim truth when there are so many different religions claiming to be true, and while they are riddled with sex scandals, including our own Church. No wonder everyone seems on edge and ready for a fight. We have nothing to rely upon but the latest thinking of people we choose to believe. The world s not going to hell in a hand basket, it s already there. How are we to find peace of mind and heart with all this? Sadly, our situation is not new to the world. Listen to the words of the Psalmist writing thousands of years ago: Help, O Lord, for the faithful have vanished; truth has gone from the people of the earth. Falsehood they speak to one another with lying lips and a false heart. (Psalm 12) How current this sounds! How true for us as for the ancients. The Psalmist suggests the root cause of this situation two psalms later: Fools have said in their hearts, there is no God above and then he provides an antidote in the very next psalm: Lord, who shall be admitted to your tent and dwell on your holy mountain? Those who walk without fault, those who act with justice and speak the truth from their hearts, those who do not slander with their tongue, those who do no wrong to their kindred, who cast no slur on their neighbors, who hold the godless in disdain, but honor those who fear the Lord; those who keep their word, come what may, who take no interest on a loan and accept no bribes against the innocent. Such people will stand firm for ever. (Psalm 15) The Psalmist begins with a fundamental base: Lord. ; in other words there is a God to whom we can turn to find the truth. Then he provides a thumbnail sketch of a person living out the truth God has provided. In St. John s Gospel Jesus proclaims, I am the way, the truth, and the life. That s an absolute statement. Either he is what he claims or he isn't. St. John tells us from the very beginning of his Gospel that Jesus is God incarnate. So, God in Jesus is telling us what the truth is, and since St. John s is the last Gospel to be written, he s telling us by extension all that Jesus teaches in the other Gospels is true. We have morals; we have virtues; we have the antidote to today s woes. Perhaps we need to listen to this wisdom from the Word of God and reflect on how we are living our lives. A little humility goes a long way. Remember, we are the mustard seed the Lord has planted for the good of all people. That means he s planted the truth in us so we can bring it to the rest of the world by the way we live (cf. to Psalm 15 above). Fr. Denis Condon

For questions, contact our Rectory at or Renew My Church Report Over the past several months, the Grouping Feedback and Discernment Team, which includes representatives from all of the parishes in our grouping, met to review and discern the future structure for our area. Based on their meetings and discussions, the group submitted a report to an Archdiocesan Commission, which includes representatives from across the Archdiocese. Based on the Grouping Team s feedback report, as well as other considerations, the Commission will present a recommendation to Cardinal Cupich and the Archdiocese s Presbyteral Council. A final decision from Cardinal Cupich and the Archdiocese s Presbyteral Council is expected within the next week. As such, we want to invite you to join us for a community meeting where all parishioners and school families from across our grouping will gather together to learn of the decision and discuss next steps for our area. It is very Important that these pledges be paid so that our parish will reach and hopefully, exceed our goal. Once the pledge payments have exceeded our goal, all of the additional funds are returned to our parish for use in our ministries. We all need moments of silence to reflect on what we value and believe about life. Tuning out the noisy world helps people develop the ability to reflect and grow. Silence also facilitates mental prayer at a time when so many are in need of rediscovering it. We need the sacred to help lead the faithful into greater silence, particularly as the world relentlessly gives us noise. Making time for Eucharistic adoration gives us a positive stillness that will restore us. Such stillness a time of recollection, giving us an inward peace, allowing us to draw breath and rediscover the one thing necessary, which we have forgotten. submitted by Marylee Powderly. Invitation to Our Bereavement Support Group Our lives are covered with many types of loss; one of the hardest being the loss of a loved one. I welcome you to journey with others whom have lost a loved one, to share and comfort while continuing to learn to cope and grow in God s love. Whether your loss was yesterday, 3 weeks, 4 months or many moons ago, I invite you to join our bereavement support group on Tuesday, Sept 18th at 6:30pm, in the Marillac Room. The Marillac Room will be accessible from the east side of St. Louise School near the parking lot southwest corner. 5 Just5Days St. Louise de Marillac Parish is very excited to again be participating in the Just5Days program next summer. Just5Days is a summer service program designed just for middle schoolers, sponsored by the Center for Ministry Development. This program provides a five day experience for middle schoolers that includes three days of direct service to those in need, as well as experiences to help middle schoolers learn about justice and to bring their experiences to God within prayer and liturgy. We are planning to participate in the Just5Days site at St. Mary Catholic Faith Community in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, from June 17-21, There will be informational meetings at 6:30 on Wednesday, September 26, and 12:30 September 30, in room 209 in the school. Altar Servers Schedule Please send conflicts for October by September 20. New SignUp Genius will be available September 17. Altar Servers Training If you are in fifth grade or older and would like to be a part of the important ministry of altar server, please contact Karyn Miller at kmillerslm@yahoo.com. Training will take place at the beginning of October. Youth Choirs Teen Choir SLM Teen Choir is open to high school and college students, as well as 7th and 8th graders who are also in SLM Children's Choir. The choir usually sings at 9:30 on the second Sunday of the month (with a few exceptions). We meet for donuts in the Marillac Room at 8 AM, and rehearse until the 9:30 Mass. If you would like to join us, we will be singing Sunday, October 14. Contact Karyn Miller (kmillerslm@yahoo.com) if you would like to sing! Instrumentalists welcome as well--we would especially welcome guitar and ukulele players! Children's Choir Faith Formation students who would like to sing in the Children's Choir should check their for the signup information. The first rehearsal will be Thursday, September 20, from 3:30-4:30 PM. Booster Club Ticket Deadline Extended Booster Club ticket purchases and renewals will be accepted through September 30th. 6 Creativity Club Director Needed St. Louise de Marillac School is looking for someone to oversee our before and after school program. This would include the scheduling of employees, coordinating student rooms and activities, and drop off/ pick up of Brook Park students. This position would start immediately. B.E.D.S Laundry Volunteers Needed B.E.D.S is looking for 6 additional volunteers to launder linens and towels once a month in their homes during the shelter season which runs from October 1st to May 15th. Please call Anne Szymczak at with any questions. Dear Parish Family, Every year, the deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago come together to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. We do this with a dinner and a fundraising event. This is our sole fundraiser of the year and it will take place on October 7. Money raised at the St. Francis Dinner support several charities that serve the poorest and most marginalized (orphans, the mentally ill, the homeless, and the recovering). It also goes toward continuing theological and ministerial education for deacons and wives, a mutual aid fund for deacons in need, and operating funds for the Diaconate Council. This year, I am asking if you d be interested in purchasing a raffle ticket, or booklet. Tickets are $5 each, or six for $25. The first prize is $1,000. There is also one $500 winner, two $100 winners, and six $50 winners. If you d be interested in taking a chance (winner need not be present!) and purchasing a ticket (or book), please let me know. The cost is $32.00 per person, and a plated breakfast will be served. Join the ACCW as they announce and honor the recipient of the 2018 ACCW college scholarship. All Parish 2018 Women of the Year, including our own Helene Clark, will be recognized, as will all parish CWO presidents, including St. Louise CWO co-presidents, Lynette Kuharchuk and Denise Kadlcek. Reservations, with payment, must be received by September 25, Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive Fundraiser for SPRED Representatives of the Knights of Columbus will be holding their "Tootsie Roll Drive" after the Masses next weekend, September 22nd and 23rd. This collection provides the funding for our SPRED program. SPRED is Special Religious Development for persons with developmental disabilities, epilepsy, or cerebral palsy.
