2 I was ordained at St. Mary of the Lake on May 12, My ordination was the culmination of 12 years of seminary education, which also included 4 years at Niles College and 4 years at Quigley South, all in the Archdiocese of Chicago seminary system. Hello From Fr. Joe Altman Hello! I am Fr. Joe Altman and I have been assigned to be with you, as the associate pastor of St. Louise de Marillac. I wish to tell you a little about myself, beginning with my most recent assignment. For the past seven years, I was pastor of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, in the Bridgeport section of Chicago. Some may know of Nativity as the parish of the first Mayor Daley and his family. Prior to that, I was pastor of Ascension St. Susanna Parish in Harvey, IL. I was pastor there for over 19 years, and during my time at AST.S, I was also pastor of St. Gerard Majella Parish in Markham, for about 9 years. With all the talk of Renew My Church, these days I must have been ahead of my time, being a pastor of two parishes at the same time. Before becoming a pastor in 1992, I was an associate pastor in a number of assignments. I was an associate at St. Catherine Laboure Parish in Glenview for five years. Leading to that I was at St. Juliana Parish on the north side of Chicago for 6 years and to begin with, my first assignment was at St. Daniel the Prophet Parish, on Chicago s south side, just west of Midway Airport. About my family life, I grew up on the south side of Chicago in St. Felicitas Parish and we lived there until my parents moved to the Beverly area of Chicago, when I as a junior in college. Just to be clear, they let me know where they were moving so I could find the house later. At that time, we became members of St. Barnabas Parish, where I eventually said my First Mass. I am an only child of two wonderful, loving parents. Unfortunately, neither are with us anymore and will not see the wonderful new Parish to which I am going. Mom passed away in March of 2003 at age 90 and dad died in October of 2013 a age 101. However, I am certain, just as they were with me at my previous assignments, they will still be with me at St. Louise De Marillac. Their strong Catholic faith was a powerful influence in my becoming a priest. They lived the faith and instilled their Catholic beliefs in me. In coming to St. Louise de Marillac, I look forward to getting to know you and to sharing in this parish community. I do not know very much about SLM Parish or the La Grange Park area, but I am eager to learn and I am sure many of our parishioners will help me out. From everyone I have spoken with, I have heard only great things about the parish and parishioners. I am eager to know you. One thing we have in common is in the last six months or so, I have been participating in Renew My Church at Nativity of Our Lord Parish in the Bridgeport, Chinatown, Canaryville Grouping. There, we consisted of 8 quite different parishes, some of whom had difficulties getting along with others. Personally, I know, at best, this is a difficult process but I believe, if we put our Catholic faith above other considerations, we can find the ways to work things out for the best of our parishes, the Archdiocese, and of all of us. I welcome you to journey with others whom have lost a loved one, to share and comfort while continuing to learn to cope and grow in God s love. Whether your loss was yesterday, 3 weeks, 4 months or many moons ago, I invite you to join our bereavement support group on Tuesday, July 17th at 6:30pm, in the Marillac Room. The Marillac Room will be accessible from the east side of St. Louise School near the parking lot southwest corner. We all need moments of silence to reflect on what we value and believe about life. Tuning out the noisy world helps people develop the ability to reflect and grow. Silence also facilitates mental prayer at a time when so many are in need of rediscovering it. We need the sacred to help lead the faithful into greater silence, particularly as the world relentlessly gives us noise. Making time for Eucharistic adoration gives us a positive stillness that will restore us. Such stillness a time of recollection, giving us an inward peace, allowing us to draw breath and rediscover the one thing necessary, which we have forgotten. submitted by Marylee Powderly. At the very end of Gaudete et Exsultate, Pope Francis new apostolic exhortation, the pope describes his purpose in writing: It is my hope that these pages will prove helpful by enabling the whole church to devote herself anew to promoting the desire for holiness. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us a fervent longing to be saints for God s greater glory, and let us encourage one another in this effort. The story, the music, and the related activities provided at the end of the book help us to recognize God s loving presence through the whole universe. LOOK! LISTEN! FEEL! Look! Listen! Feel! is an illustrated story that expands our language about God beyond Father to include images of God reflected in and through creation. The book, published by The Well, combines original text by Bridget Sperduto, children s art and Sr. Kathy Sherman s music to facilitate children s experience of the natural world as a place of the immanent and in -and-through God who is everywhere and in everything. Using activities offered at the back of the book, we come to recognize God s loving presence with and within us. On August 2-3, join us for fun, games, prayer, and fellowship at Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs. Open to girls entering grades 8-12 in the school year. Participation in this retreat is limited to eight girls, due to the size of the venue. Cost is $20. Permission forms available in the Youth Ministry bulletin rack, the rectory, Teen Room, or from Karyn Miller. Summer Lock-In Water, water everywhere! 6 NEW RECTORY HOURS We have been contemplating a few changes at the rectory, with RMC ahead of us, relocation of certain ministries and personnel changes that have occurred over the last several months. To accommodate these changes, the rectory hours will change effective August 1, The change will affect the evenings and weekends only, as follows: Tuesday through Friday, 4PM -7:30PM Saturday 9AM to 3PM Beginning August 1, the rectory will be closed on Sunday and Monday evening. Ministries that usually meet on Monday evenings can arrange for an alternate day for key pickup and drop off. Please make Father Denis aware of any concerns you may have regarding these changes. A Catholic Digest Fave Five Charity The Society's nearly 100,000 trained volunteers in the United States provided 17.5 million hours of volunteer service in 2016, helping more than 20.9 million people through visits to homes, prisons and hospitals at a value of more than $1 billion dollars. During Pope Francis recent visit, he reached Christians and non-christians alike with his message of helping others. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been putting these words into practice for more than170 years. SVP is truly volunteer driven with a volunteer to staff ratio of 16 to 1. We assist people who need a gas card, or money for food, medicine, rent, and utilities While we help St. Louise parishioners, some recipients are not parishioners Many people are in need due to a job loss or illness. Did you know that 78% of Americans (8 out of 10) say they live paycheck to paycheck? Thank you for your financial support through donations in the Poor Box, for your checks, and for your contributions of clothing in the SVP clothing box adjacent to the Colonnade Room. Page 6 St. Vincent de Paul never wrote a book about his spiritual teachings. But we find the living voice of the saint in his letters and conferences in which he trained his followers for the mission of service to the poor. The two fundamental sources of his teaching are the GOSPEL and LIFE. He wanted his followers to put the whole of the Gospel into the whole of their lives, and he never wearied of deepening both with all the faith that God had put into his heart. That is why all that Vincent says to us has the simplicity of our everyday life and the penetrating strength of the Word of God.
