2 astor s Corner with Father Denis It s here. March Madness has begun. It seems every March our parish stuffs the month with as many events as the college basketball finals. And we did it again this year. Here s a list of what s coming up. Annual Catholic Appeal - round 2 Collection of old palms on March 2/3 Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent RMC Transition Team begins the process of uniting us with St. Barbara Vegas Night for the School Cradles to Candles parish Lenten project (details will be found in next week s bulletin) Parish Mission - check the bulletin Parish Play - check the bulletin New pastor appointed sometime during week 3 St. Patrick s Day Remote preparations for Easter And, of course, the college basketball finals Add this to your family calendar and see if it isn t really madness! What gets swallowed up in all this frenzy is Lent. I realize for many Lent is not the favorite season, but it is our preparation for Easter, which should be the biggest feast of the year. As I suggested a couple of weeks ago, we can walk down the road so familiar to us - the road of doing the exact same things we tried to do last year and the year before that etc., etc. - or we can strike out on a new road. I think of Robert Frost s poem, The Road Not Taken, with the ending and I, I chose the one less traveled by/ and that s made all the difference. Lent offers us an opportunity to make a difference in our lives if we choose the road less traveled. This year the Church has provided the road of union with St. Barbara. The practical aspects of that union will begin in a few weeks but we can prepare ourselves over the 6 weeks of Lent. After the union, life will be different and we can prepare for that now. Beginning a new life can be scary. I think of folks facing an upcoming wedding. There s so many things that change as well as questions and fears. For us, as a Christian community, we need to bring our questions and fears to the Holy Spirit. We do need guidance and patience. We believe the Spirit is the one calling for a major change in the Church for the sake of the Gospel and so it makes sense for us to turn to the Spirit as we prepare for change in our lives for the sake of the Gospel. We can tap into the Spirit through our Lenten Mission. This year s Mission will be held for 3 weeks alternating between St. Barbara and St. Louise [dates and times will appear in the bulletin.] We will be using videos from the Renew My Church Summit held last summer during which Fr. James Mallon, a Canadian priest from Halifax, Nova Scotia, laid out for us why the Church needs to change and how he and his community went about it. Fr. Mallon is a dynamic and engaging speaker who wanted to open us up to the working of the Spirit in our lives. As he told us, he and his team were not suggesting we do exactly what they did, but find our own way. His point was the change we need to make is internal, not external. We all know many have left the Church and, worse, the younger generation find the Church irrelevant! Changing programs won t fix this, only a personal and a community renewal in the Gospel will. Combining territories and staffs and finances will not bring folks into our new parish. People today are not looking for programs or modernized buildings. They are looking for answers to what life is all about. The rat race to build careers, amass money and the frenzied pursuit of fun don t provide a meaningful life. They only exhaust folks. Pope Francis has pointed out that we are not living in an age of culture change but in a change of ages. What has gone before is no more; what is to come has not yet been revealed. Many scholars tell us we are living in a secular world now. The different faiths - Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Wiccan, science, atheism - all claim that if we follow their rules, we will find the answers to what life is all about. Since getting an entire nation to accept one of these is out of the question, all faiths are pushed aside leaving the individual to choose for themselves. That means God has been pushed out of the market place. Still people are searching for meaning in life and we know the one who can provide the way for them. Jesus. But people don t come to us through catechism or doctrine. Christianity itself is divided about that. People will come to see, and want to become, part of a people whose lives show an inner peace based on a life lived with Jesus himself. For us, Roman Catholics, to live daily with Jesus who walks with me all the time is a new concept. To be able to actually get to know Jesus like we would a good friend, sounds fishy. And yet, it s true. And that s exactly what many young people today are seeking. Finding a people whose lives show the joy of life with Christ attracts folks to the community. And that s the road less traveled to which the Spirit is calling us. The same ole, same ole Lent will only result in the same ole Easter. A new age calls for a revitalized, joyful people of God. Are we willing to follow the Lord down the less traveled road? Fr. Denis Condon

Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. Fasting allows persons to eat one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have reached their 14th year. Fridays in Lent are obligatory days of complete abstinence (from meat) for all who have completed their 14th year. The Way of the Cross During the season of Lent, we come to a greater awareness of Jesus love for us. One way to experience this is reflection on the events of Jesus passion and death. Praying the Stations of the Cross helps us delve more deeply into the Pascal Mystery of dying and rising. Come join us in Church on Fridays at 2:15pm and 7pm during Lent as we walk the Way of the Cross.
