2 astor s Corner with Father Denis Doubting Thomas has his time in the spotlight today. Thomas epitomizes the stereotypical Missourian: won t believe it until I see it! Thomas won t believe his fellow Apostles when they tell him that not only is Jesus risen, but they ve actually seen him! Right here! In this room! Just last week! Right, replies Thomas, a dead man visited you last week. Sure. And that donkey down the road just said good morning to me when I passed by. Despite all the arguments of the Apostles, he can t believe it. He has to see for himself; to have the proof right in front of his eyes so he can examine it. Thomas seems to be the focus, perhaps even the main cause, of Jesus second visit to the Upper Room. Jesus confers the Holy Spirit on the Apostles for the forgiveness of sin. He could have done that the first time, but Thomas wasn t present. He waited until Thomas arrived, until all the Apostles were present, for the conferral of the Holy Spirit. Afterward, Jesus spoke to Thomas about his faith, or lack of it. So, what is faith? There are many definitions of faith. Faith accepts as true what you cannot prove is a good one but the one that seems to best fit today s Gospel doesn t see faith as a thing like a catechism or a creed, nor some personal road that leads me to heaven. Rather, this definition sees faith as an action: a group of people working together in the hope that what they do will make life better for others. This definition sees faith as service, not just by me, but by a group of people working together. Jesus models this service definition of faith. At the very outset of his mission, Jesus calls together a group of men to follow him. This group goes about doing good; the Word of God is preached, people are cured of illnesses and Jesus and his disciples show folks the way to live. It took the power of the Holy Spirit and eventually the disciples learned that even the Passion and Death of the Lord was a life given in service to others; that death could be destroyed and the gates of heaven thrown open once more. Faith is the action of Jesus disciples, performed in the hope of improving life for others. We see this all around us. In our school we have a group of people working together in the hope of making life better not only for our children but also for their families. In the Appalachian Service Project (ASP), we find teens and adults - a group of people - working together in the hope of making life better for the poor. In our Rummage Sale, the collection of food for the Food Pantry, the coat drive, BEDS, the SPRED program and many other services and ministries of the parish, we see a dedicated group of people working together in the hope of making life better for others. Furthermore, this definition of faith can expand to include our society: the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Boys Town, Special Olympics and so many other charities. At first, we may not regard these as falling under the umbrella of faith, but remember what Jesus said, If they are not opposed to us, they are with us. In other words, they are doing the Father s will. This week we buried Daniel Hull, a man whose life was dedicated to the service of the people of Brookfield. He lived this definition of faith and we could all do well to follow his example. Sadly, in our society we focus on the individual so much that we have forgotten we are social animals, as the scientists tell us. The famous quote no man is an island encapsulates that idea. We don t live solitary lives, we live in a society which, by definition, means living with others. If we think about it, we depend on many others for our everyday existence. Everyone who works in the oil business, the manufacturing business, farming, all the service industries, the transportation industry, comprise thousands of people working to bring the goods and services to us for our everyday lives. How can we expect out of all this communal living that only faith should be private and personal? The call of Christ to be part of his society fundamentally is a call to be ourselves, to recognize our social selves. The uniqueness of his call has to do with recognizing that life is lived in, with and for the author of life. Even the Trinity is a society of three persons. In addition, we are created in the image and likeness of this Society. Jesus was the one to name God the Father, that is, the head of a family, a group of people united by birth, the birth of Baptism. So faith expands our understanding beyond religion to encompass the very way we are created. We are a social people purposefully created by the Father and called to live together in the hope of making life better for all. All this belies the I don t want to get involved mentality. We live a social life. Jesus asks us to recognize that truth and to live it out. Fr. Denis Condon

This session was an opportunity to learn about potential new scenarios for parish life in the local area. We are offering the parishioners another alternative for viewing the informational video presented at that meeting, as well as an opportunity to provide feedback on the scenarios through an on line survey. RMC CORNER Renew My Church Our Parishes St. Louise, St. Barbara, Divine Infant, Divine Providence 40th Anniversary of Ordination Mass and Celebration For Father Denis Condon April 28th at 5pm Mass You are invited in presence and prayer to celebrate Father Denis Condon s 40 th Anniversary of Ordination. Following Mass, join Father Denis, his family and friends, and our St. Louise family in the Parish Center for dinner and an evening of dancing. Parishioners of all ages are welcome, but space is limited by occupancy regulations. Reservation tickets are necessary for dinner and dancing in the Parish Center. Tickets will be available after all masses on the following weekends: April 7-8, April 14-15, and April 21-22, or ending earlier if the occupancy limit is reached. There is no charge for tickets. Easter Basket Project Thank You Through the generous food donations brought in by SLM School and Faith Formation students and the monetary donations of parishioners, about 50 boxes of Easter food were packed for 25 needy families served by the food pantry at our sharing parish, St. Aloysius! Thanks to Kathy Krajniak and the Hopkins family for your help in shopping and packing! Greater Chicago Food Depository Event Thank You Thank you to Misty Oswald and Bob Lifka who helped out at the Greater Chicago Food Depository on Saturday March 10 together we packaged 119 cases of Maccaroni which is a total of 4284 lbs. We hope to see more people on Saturday May 12th pm to 3:45pm note this is around Mothers day weekend be a great present for mom to come down and help us or for moms to have the house to themselves. Thanks Steven Lifka. Pentecost Vigil 2018 Pentecost Vigil 2018 May Last year, an estimated 100 people participated in St. Louise de Marillac s first Pentecost Vigil celebration. This year we hope to build on that and involve and invite more people to come and be part of the overnight vigil on May The vigil will include adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 6 p.m. Saturday through 6:30 a.m. Sunday, along with a bonfire burning through the night outside in front of church representing the holy fire of faith. The celebration will conclude with morning prayer at 6:45 a.m. Sunday. There will be an opportunity to sign up for times for adoration and/or to help tend the fire in the coming weeks.
