4 Page Four OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH March 10, 2019 PASTOR S LENTEN WHITE BOARD The meaning of Lent for Catholics I tell people, I was Catholic before I was born. I believe that is true, my parents would never have not gone to church, and their parents would have made sure they always went to church and this was back in the horse and buggy era transitioning to the classic 50 s Chevys. I say that, because for most lifelong Catholics there has always been Lent. A season of heavy spiritual practices from abstinence to fasting to stations, covered statues and so on. Why? To help us feel our faith. The body remembers when the mind forgets. Generally, when we actually do something it has a longer memory life and impact on us than just thinking about doing something. But, why do Lent at all? Can t we just be spiritual all year? I think it is because we as human beings like special events and we like getting ready for special events. When we know there is a wedding, birthday/anniversary party to plan, first communions and the like, half the fun is getting ready. The day/days arrive and they re great too, but probably greater because we did the prep, and we re ready. After the 1980 s, however, there was a major shift in the Catholic world. Actually, it was a time of harkening back to another era in the Church. After Vatican II, the Church was asking the question about convert instruction is there something better, something richer in our history that can help people not just be trained in the understanding of their faith, but have their hearts be converted to following and loving Christ? The African Church, along with the German Church led the way in saying at the very beginning of Christianity, before it became the state religion, people who want to become Christian had to go through a process where they were mentored in understanding the faith and had to demonstrate that they got it, that the conversion had taken hold. St. Paul VI affirmed this, saying we are taking from our treasury something very precious. The roots of Lent are really about Catechumens the people who are trying to figure out Christianity and seeking Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. In the next few weeks, you ll hear more about our Catechumens, their journey, their process. You ll also hear about candidates, but they are more like us already baptized and that too makes an incredible difference. Lent is the final time of preparation for Elect Catechumens (a 40-day retreat, if you will) at the end of which they celebrate the Easter Sacraments. For those of us Catholic Christian Lifers, the new layer of Lent meaning for us is that while we walk with those seeking Easter Sacraments: we remember that our faith is meant to be lived, and in remembering we recommit to understanding Jesus Christ and the power of the mystery of God. Giving up in Lent (fasting) is about making room for the love of Christ. Taking on during Lent (almsgiving) is putting our faith into action. Taking quiet time or reflection time in Lent (praying) is about seeing God at work in us and with us directly. May your Lent 2019 be filled with meaning! Fr. Brad
