4 Page Four OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH March 24, 2019 First Scrutiny - Third Sunday of Lent March 24, at the 11 AM Mass we celebrate the first of three scrutinies, Rites for self-searching and strengthening, for those preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil. The scrutinies are meant to uncover and then heal all that is weak in the hearts of the elect, and to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good. Let us pray for Victoria Bannon, Kristina Betts, Russell Brewer, Stephanie Brown, Omar Cabral, Seth Clifford, Aaron Fogg, Neil Lichtenberger, Derrick Lock, Yiming (Zaria) Ma, April Ohlendorf, and Tiantian (Teresa) Zhang as they continue their faith journey toward the Easter sacraments. Even very young children can understand and will enjoy participating in traditions and rituals of our Catholic Faith. Your family is invited to join us to color, draw, and collect little objects that help children to better know Jesus and the meaning of the cross as we pray, share and get to know our parish families who seek to pass on our Catholic faith to their children. The Church, our whole parish is a family in itself. We invite all generations to this gathering because we al play a role in passing on our faith, prayers, and rituals to the next generation. While this gathering will be sensitive to needs of children, we all benefit. So parents with school age children, those not yet parents, empty nesters, and grandparents. ALL ARE WELCOME. The whole family is welcome Crayons to share/colored pencils for older school children Wear comfy clothes. We will be sitting on the carpeted floor of church PJ s are Welcome It s a school night so you might want to tuck younger children in bed as soon as you get home. 5 March 24, 2019: THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT SHARING MY ENCOUNTER Page Five The Gospel today is the story of a woman who meets Jesus at a well while drawing water and is forever changed by her encounter with Jesus. This month marks six months of my serving the families of Old St. Mary s and I have been changed by an encounter of Christ within the OSM community. Allow me to share my encounter with you in a way that also provides an update on the happenings of our Lifelong Faith Formation efforts. Like our Gospel story of the woman at the well, Jesus was not afraid to reach out to someone who was a stranger or different from Him; much like how you received me into your community. The welcome I have received by the OSM community has been both warm and a lesson. OSM truly embraces what the scriptures teach us about hospitality. Don't mistreat any foreigners who live in your land. Instead, treat them as well as you treat your own people and love them as much as you love yourself... Leviticus 19 : I have both learned who we are called to be as believers by your welcome and like the woman at the well; I have encountered Christ and have come to know who Christ is by the way you received me. I serve the OSM community in the area of faith formation which is to help all ages to grow in knowledge and relationship with God throughout the whole of life. This includes exploring and growing more as a disciple in all of our life settings, how we interact with others, how we live at home, work, school and in the world. I have established a Lifelong Faith Formation Commission which will help to guide our parish efforts to pass on the faith and help all ages to grow in knowledge and in a relationship with God. The commission make up includes men and women of diverse life settings; parents with children as young as one-year-old to grandparents. The woman at the well from our Gospel today met Jesus and ran to tell everyone about her conversation with Jesus. The Lifelong Faith Commission is asking what do we hope our parish family will tell others about Jesus at each age throughout the whole of life? What do our youngest parishioners need to know and our oldest need to know about Jesus in order to tell others about Jesus? I have begun to introduce family ministry opportunities. Family ministry is a ministry of accompaniment that both passes on the riches of our Catholic faith but also helps to make Christ known to participants. Our Advent Encounter and our Children s Stations Of The Cross are examples of our family ministry opportunities. I am leading our parish staff in an experience of Alpha, an evangelization program we hope to begin parish wide. This month I am beginning a five-week small faith discussion group on the Mass which will empower participants to be more fully engaged in the Mass and to exit the Mass with purpose. We have 3 weeks left in Lent; many opportunities to come to know God and encounter Him this season remain. In today s Gospel Jesus said, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst I encourage you to set aside time to seek out Jesus, drink in the opportunities available at our parish. We have weekly Stations of the Cross or our 10 Minute Catholic on Sunday mornings between Masses and more. Intentionally set time aside to encounter Him, accompany one another this Lent with the same generosity that you have shown me. Maryellen Harrington, Director of Lifelong Faith Formation Do You Know a Parishioner Who is Homebound? The homebound are still members of our parish community as members of the Body of Christ. This union becomes real when our Eucharistic ministers take Holy Communion to them in the homes or at a nursing home. If you know of someone who is not able to get to church on a regular basis let us know ( ) and we will arrange for a minister to visit. Fr. Steve Petroff and the Eucharistic Ministry to the Homebound Team
6 Page Six OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH March 24, 2019 Do you sometimes find yourself unfocused or confused by what is happening at Mass? Do you ever wonder why say this, do that, the role of the priest, etc? Today we are surrounded by distractions and we have been conditioned to fill any void or silent moment with notice and stimulation. Therefore instilling an appreciation or enthusiasm for the Mass can be a challenge. Do you find yourself distracted and find it difficult to stay focused during Mass or understand what is happening throughout it? The Mass is an opportunity to step back from our busy lives so that we can truly encounter Jesus. But it helps if we understand what is happening at Mass and why it is so important. There is more to Mass than meets the eye! Join us Wednesday mornings beginning March 27th at 9:30am in the parish center for an opportunity to grow in appreciation for the Mass, the prayer of our Church of our Catholic faith tradition. We will be viewing a dynamic 5 part video series (20 minutes each week) with inspiring presenters who speak to modern believers of today. This is an opportunity to meet others who want to understand the Mass more and share conversation with others. Wednesday s beginning March 9:30am Van Buren Room (Room 202) of the Petermann Parish Center. We will meet for 5 weeks for about 1 hour. Contact Maryellen ext 26 with any questions or mharrington@oldstmarys.com While an RSVP is not necessary it would be very helpful. Maryellen to let her know you are joining us. Q What is the role of the assembly in the experience of the elect? How can the assembly be helpful to them? A Initiation is the responsibility of the entire parish community. The assembly accompanies the elect in this last phase of their journey through participation in the scrutinies and presentations, by providing witness to the life of Christ, a listening ear, and hearts filled with gratitude for their presence. Members of the assembly can make an effort to reach out to the elect, share conversation, and pray for them. Timothy A. Johnson Archdiocese of Chicago Liturgy Training Publications. All rights reserved. Art by Paula Wiggins. Do you like seeing the children come forward during Mass on Sunday? Have you ever wondered what the children learn in class? Would you like to grow closer to GOD and grow in Faith? Now is the time to say YES! The Children s Liturgy team needs You! We are especially in need of volunteers for the 3rd and 4th weekends of the month. Liturgy of the Word for Children takes place at the 8 am Mass. Currently we can only offer it on the first two weekends of the month. We need adults or whole families who are willing to help just one Sunday per month at the 8 am Mass on either the 3rd or 4th Sunday of the month. This is a great ministry for whole families with school age children to do together. We are seeking whole families OR adults for our team.
