2 W e often sing the hymn, The Lord Lives in Light or Reign and Rule thinking of today s feast of the Transfiguration. This vision of the glorified Christ is important to us. In fact, it is so important, that the regular Sunday celebration is replaced by today s Feast of the Transfiguration. The vision you celebrate today is a vision of the Son of Man, risen and glorious. Your vision, experienced by Peter, prince of the apostles, is that of the very person of Christ. That vision, like the dream in the Book of Daniel, is meant to give you courage and hope, especially in time of persecution or turmoil. No matter what happens in this life, you share a vision of the future, of Christ in glory, on the clouds of heaven. His kingdom will not be taken away, and angels uncounted will be his ministers. In this present age, all over the world, Christians know well the reality of persecution and rejection and violence. From France to Algeria, from Bosnia to Egypt, from Libya to Lebanon, from Iraq to Indonesia, you know of riots and burning, and death, because people are Christian. Here is but one example of many. In 2008, the Catholic Archbishop of Kirkuk said that the Church of Iraq is becoming, once again, a Church of martyrs. Thirty years ago, there were approximately 1.4 million Christians in Iraq. The number dwindled to around one million after the fall of Saddam Hussein. A year ago, it was estimated that there were less than 250,00 left. Most of these Christians are Catholic, of the Chaldean Rite, in communion with the Bishop of Rome. Archbishop Louis Sako of the city of Kirkuk knew what he was talking about. When bombers targeted churches in Baghdad and Kirkuk, death and devastation were everywhere. Bombs were set off precisely when crowds came to church to celebrate the Divine Liturgy, to kill as many people as possible. Archbishop Sako described the astonishing courage of both Catholics and Orthodox. At the funeral Mass for one fourteen-year-old boy murdered in the bomb attack, the cathedral was filled with people. The bishop said that people did this to show they were even more attached to Christianity than every before. In Iraq as elsewhere, wherever there is persecution, the Church grows stronger. People become more determined to hold on to their faith, to cherish their tradition, to teach their children, to pray with fervor, to sing from their hearts, to love the liturgy, whenever they have the opportunity to celebrate it. Down through the ages, the Church endures because we share the vision, together with Peter, of Christ in glory, the Lord transfigured and radiant, risen and glorious. It is he who makes us what we are, who binds up our wounds, who gives us reason to hope. Keep your attention focused on this vision, until the first streaks of dawn appear and the morning star rises in your hearts. The Lord Lives in Light, Parish Liturgy Magazine Page 2

The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew s Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased, and he assures us that the message is altogether reliable (2 Peter 1:17, 19). Copyright J.
