2 astor s Corner with Father Denis The Church sets aside this month for us to reflect on death. Granted that s not something most of us spend much time thinking about, but the wisdom of the Church draws our attention to the one thing in this life we all can count on: life on this planet is terminal. Cemeteries around the world attest to that fact. Unpleasant as it is, the Church calls on us to think about it, not to be morbid, but to bring to mind that life extends beyond the grave. After all we do profess a belief in the resurrection. There s more to life than meets the eye literally. When I was a novice in the monastery we had to study the Rule of St. Benedict. Chapter 4, The Tools of the Monastery, contained the admonition, Keep death daily before your eyes. I found that tool a bit harsh. Talk about throwing a wet blanket on things! It was my first inkling that St. Ben was not a fun loving kind of guy. I was a young man and death was far, far in the future. Why would I want to depress myself by keeping death daily before my eyes? (he wasn t big on laughter either.) Over the course of years, I noticed a lot of paintings of saints that included a skull either in their hand or on their desk. Again, the admonition would pop into my head and I d shiver, quickly finding something else to think about. There was too much living to do, too much to enjoy in life. Why not look on the bright side? Perhaps the wisdom of St. Benedict can only be appreciated after one has a number of years under one s belt. Wide-eyed youth focus on fun; elders lick the wounds of life. If life teaches anything, it s what the author of The Road Less Traveled told us: life is suffering. The hard knocks of life pound that into our heads eventually, but it takes some time before we get it. Facing the reality of death can lead us to despair or to wisdom. Today the Church s efforts during November aim at wisdom over despair. Not so long ago, back in the age of spare the rod and spoil the child that was the mantra of parenting, the Church frightened the sin out of folks by invoking the image of our end: death, judgement, heaven and hell. Just look at Michelangelo s depiction of the Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. The horror on the faces of the damned was meant to turn sinners into saints. And Dante s Inferno was intended to have the same effect. Thank God, the power of the Spirit has changed our understanding of God from a stern and exacting judge to a merciful Father. There will be an accounting for how we spent our life, but by a loving Father and concerned Brother rather than by an angry Judge & Jury. But all this is egoism. It s all about me and how I can save my soul! Perhaps the death we need to focus on is the death of Jesus and all that has to tell us. In a dialogue on Divine Providence by St. Catherine of Sienna we hear God say, So that I might commute the death consequent upon Adam s disobedience, I attended to you with loving care - out of provident concern I handed over my onlybegotten Son to make satisfaction for your needs. I demanded supreme obedience from him so that the human race might be freed of the poison which had infected the entire earth because of Adam s disobedience. With eager love he submitted to a shameful death on the cross and by that death he gave you life, not merely human but divine. he gave you life. If this is true, then our understanding of death and life needs an overhaul. Jesus gave us life. Recalling the memories of our dead, celebrating saints feasts is all about life. Each All Saints/All Souls celebration is just that - a celebration of life! These people are all alive and there s the reminder that we shall be too. To pretend that the loss of a loved one doesn t cause pain is insensitive. The key to this is the word loss. We mourn the loss of someone woven into our life and, when they leave, an important piece of the tapestry of our life is ripped off. Love weaves people together which is the nature of love. Death pulls a person out of our life and the pain screams out that a part of us has been wrenched away. God did not create death. According to St. Paul, death is the wages of sin. And sin comes from us, not God. As St. Catherine points out, God re-weaves the tapestry of life through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. he gave you life, not merely human but divine. I don t think it s a coincidence that this reflection on death comes right before we celebrate the Incarnation - the birth (life) of Christ. Our mortal death leads directly into the new life the Son of God has given us. Just as Nature slips into the death of winter and will come to life again in spring, so we slip into death only to rise again to new life. The Father tends to us with loving care now and always. That should be a good reason to get to know our Father better. And that s the whole point. Fr. Denis Condon

Lectors/Eucharistic Ministers Schedules The new schedule for December 15th, 2018 through March 31th, 2019 will be coming out soon. This schedule will include the Christmas masses. Because of early holiday bulletin deadlines, we need to know if there are any dates that you are unavailable or if you have preferences for serving at the Christmas and New Year s masses. It is important that you let us know as soon as possible. Sign-up sheets will also be available in the Gathering Room. We will do our best to honor all requests; however, if we are not notified of your preferences, you will be randomly scheduled. Check the parish calendar for the Christmas and New Year s mass times. Just5Days The next meeting to prepare for next summer's middle school service trip is Tuesday, November 13, from 3-4 PM in Room 209. This year's theme is "Beatitude Attitude: Be Happy!" If you are interested in joining those who have already committed to this amazing ministry, please contact Karyn Miller. Youth Choirs Teen Choir SLM Teen Choir is open to high school and college students, as well as 7th and 8th graders who are also in SLM Children's Choir. The choir usually sings at 9:30 on the second Sunday of the month (with a few exceptions). We meet for donuts in the Marillac Room at 8 AM, and rehearse until the 9:30 Mass. If you would like to join us, we will be singing Sunday, December 9, and joining the Children s Choir at the 9:00 Mass on Thanksgiving morning. Contact Karyn Miller if you would like to sing! Happenings at St. Barbara Save the Date November 29th CWO 3rd Annual Christkindlmarket Bus Trip Hop aboard with friends, family and the CWO for their 3 rd Annual Bus Trip to the Christkindlmarket at Naper Settlement. Transportation will be by bus, and the price of transportation will be determined by the number of participants. We will board the bus on Harrison near the rectory to depart at 10:10 AM and will return by 3:00 PM. There is no fee for entry to the Christkindlmarket at Naper Settlement. Dress for the weather and shop in an outdoor candy cane striped village for unique gifts from Germany and Europe. Warm up and enjoy German food, sweet and savory treats, and drink inside a winter wonderland setting. The cost of lunch and any items purchased are not included. Fall Craft Show & Bake Sale Sat., Nov am - 3 pm St. Barbara Parish Center The St. Barbara Knights of Columbus is bringing back the Men s Club annual Corned Beef Dinner, Fri., Dec. 7th in the Parish Center. Doors open at 6:00pm. Dinner is served at 7:00pm. Tickets are $35 per person. This year both men and women are invited. Minimum age to attend is 18. Our Guest Speaker is Ron Kittle, former left fielder and designated hitter in Major League Baseball. He was known for his home run hitting power, and was named the 1983 AL Rookie of the Year. Kittle played for the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles. Thank you to all the members and friends who attended, the businesses and members who donated the array of wonderful prizes, to those who modeled and to those who worked for months to plan the event, create the prize baskets, and spend their afternoon at the event making everything run smoothly. Thank you to the husbands who transported the truckload of prizes, and congratulations to all the prize winners!!!
