2 astor s Corner with Father Denis and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Why? Why would the One who has no beginning and no end become one of us? The Divine Word of the Father, the One who created the gases and the forces that brought on the Big Bang; the One who thought up the laws of Nature; who set the orbits of planets and comets; who came up with the idea of dark matter, nebula and black holes that swallow all matter, including light, that comes into its swirling embrace; the One who dreamed up earthlings made in the image and likeness of the Creator why would this unique One choose to enter time and space just like we do as a single cell in his mother s womb? Why? This should be the question running through our minds right now on the eve of celebrating the Lord s birth. What would cause the Divine to choose our life steeped as it is in misery and disappointment? To answer that question, we need to take a look at ourselves. After all, we are created in the image and likeness of God, which means something in our mortal existence should be able to shed light on this question. My guess is the stories we enjoy this season give us the hint we need. It s a Wonderful Life tells the story of a man who runs up against the powers of this world in the miserly business man. He despairs and contemplates suicide until a bumbling and incompetent angel enters his life to show him the consequences of his would-be suicide. This all too human angel sent by God leads George to realize that love and communal working together conquers all. While all these stories entice us with how wonderful life could be if we only believed and loved each other, we all know they are fantasies - not real. The real world is harsh and there are no Christmas ghosts or bumbling angels or midnight trains stopping on the street outside your house. But we do know love. Looking at the crèche, we see a family whose influence extends beyond themselves. What s special about this family is the love they have for each other. The Gospel lets us know they lived ordinary human lives. Joseph worked for a living. He also had to have a solid relationship with God to accept what life threw at him. Mary took on a responsibility far beyond anything she might have imagined. These two learned to love and care for each other as any human couple do. The arrival of Jesus cemented their commitment both to God and to each other. It didn t make life into a made-for-tv movie, but it did ground them and sustained them. Now look at your own life, at the ones you love. What wouldn t you do for them? You sacrifice for your spouse, for your children, for your parents as they age. Why? Love. And wouldn t you give your own life for your children? There is the answer to the question of why God would become one of us. Simply, God loves us even more than we love our children. It s as simple as that. Celebrate life this week with the gusto of the ghost of Christmas Present. Allow your inner child to play. Celebrate your loves and see in those relationships the God who loves you just as you are. But remember the admonition of Jacob Marley: mankind was my business! Take up that business, like Joseph, Mary and Jesus did, and find the gift of joy that no earthly power can give. Merry Christmas to all! Fr. Denis Condon Dickens A Christmas Carol covers the same territory via a walk through Scrooge s life to see what turned him into such a miserable human being. After learning that humankind was my business from Marley s ghost, Scrooge watches his young self build a wall about himself to avoid the pains of human life. What frees him? The Spirit of Christmas Present showing him love celebrated, love that brings joy and purpose to life. The Grinch echoes all this. A grouchy recluse (removed from community life) has a change of heart, literally, leading him to feel and celebrate love in community. The Polar Express works with faith and community. Our hero can t believe Santa (a God figure) is real until his fantastic and scary journey leads him face to face with the one he couldn t believe in. And that One shows him special favor (a bell only those who believe can hear) before he returns home to find how that belief can spread joy to others.

Altar Servers Training If you are in fifth grade or older and would like to be a part of the important ministry of altar server, please contact Karyn Miller.

The choir usually sings at 9:30 on the second Sunday of the month, but in January we will be singing again on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6.

Youth Choirs Teen Choir SLM Teen Choir is open to high school and college students, as well as 7th and 8th graders who are also in SLM Children's Choir. The choir usually sings at 9:30 on the second Sunday of the month, but in January we will be singing again on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6. We will meet for donuts in the Marillac Room at 8 AM, and rehearse until the 9:30 Mass. If you would like to join us, contact Karyn Miller. Instrumentalists are welcome as well--we would especially welcome percussionists, guitar and ukulele players! Children's Choir It's not too late to join our Children's Choir!
