2 astor s Corner with Father Denis Are you sick of political ads? I am. I was over those ads a couple of weeks ago. I m afraid I m getting cynical as I age, or perhaps I have just seen and heard too much over the years to believe what I hear. Politicians tear each other apart with attacks on one another personally, or by dredging up something the other guy did long ago, as if politicians were above making mistakes or sinning. What happened to debating the issues rather than making the candidate the issue? I remember a political-science class I had when I was in college. The professor, a former ambassador to an African nation, had been in government service for many years. He discussed how the nation-state acted amorally, which was distressing enough, but then he also noted that a politician s one and only job was to get elected any way he/she can. To my young and idealistic ears that sounded horrible. How could he say such a thing? It was a put-down of truth, justice and the American way! Now I realize he was right. Politicians are bought and sold by the highest bidder to make sweetheart deals when they are in Congress. As someone has said, democracy is a rotten system, but it s the best one we have. The world is a hard and harsh place, peopled with all kinds of despicable characters. That s the way it s always been and probably will be, until the Lord returns at the end of time. Power corrupts, as British Lord Acton has famously said. When we hear how God is calling us to live how we are to treat others with respect and dignity, how we are to care for the poor and the outsider, how we are to be charitable and not steal and then read the news, it s no surprise that many scratch their heads wondering why should I try to live like God calls us to live, while so many others don t seem to care and get away with actions that leave them living the good life. Why should I bother? Even the prophet Habakkuk railed at God for all the injustice and corruption in the world that God was doing nothing about. God s answer to the prophet was similar to the one he gave Job when Job raised the same question: I am God, not you. I do not answer to you, but you to me. Not very satisfying, but true. In the Gospel, Jesus softens that a touch by saying the Father cares for his children asking them to trust him, which in hard times is tough to do. Pity the person who tries to live a Christian moral life while working for corrupt companies in corporate America. How can anyone live out what Jesus teaches in the Gospel and work for a company or corporation whose sole goal is making as much money as possible no matter how? Can a person be honest when our bosses expect us to cheat or mislead or downright lie to fool some poor sap into purchasing something they don t need or want? In this world how can a person refuse to go along to get along and keep their job? The call to a righteous life seems unrealistic. And that s the bite of faith. What we profess to believe in is an entirely different world from this one. Remember Jesus prayer? He asked the Father to help us live in the world but not be part of the world. He taught us to be as wily as serpents in this world, but not for the same purposes. We should be as clever about living our faith, armed with street smarts. When God says there is no other god besides him, that translates into there is no other reality besides him. What God tells us about this life and the next is real. Anything that contradicts or denies that is a lie! Can we prove that? No. But that s the whole point of faith; we accept as true what we cannot prove. Those who demand proof have closed themselves off to any world other than the one they can see, feel, smell, touch or taste. For them there is nothing beyond this material world. Down deep they wish there was something, but they can t bring themselves to make that leap of faith. What Christ calls us to is exactly that leap of faith. He calls us to see God as our Father (his actual word was Papa ), and live as a child of God. As I said above, that s hard, if not impossible. God knows that. So, why is he asking the impossible? Because someone has got to live reality so the rest of the folks can see it. God is real; God is here among us (Emmanuel); what God says about life is real as are our struggles with the clash of what this world says is real compared to what God says is real. Yet, in keeping on keeping on, by committing ourselves to our loving relationships, constantly striving to live more like Jesus, we hold to faith in the Father and show the world there is more to life than meets the eye or fills a bank account. That s what Jesus calls us to do. Fr. Denis Condon

Just5Days The next meeting to prepare for next summer's middle school service trip is Tuesday, November 13, from 3-4 PM in Room 209. This year's theme is "Beatitude Attitude: Be Happy!" If you are interested in joining those who have already committed to this amazing ministry, please contact Karyn Miller. Youth Choirs Teen Choir SLM Teen Choir is open to high school and college students, as well as 7th and 8th graders who are also in SLM Children's Choir. The choir usually sings at 9:30 on the second Sunday of the month (with a few exceptions). We meet for donuts in the Marillac Room at 8 AM, and rehearse until the 9:30 Mass. If you would like to join us, we will be singing Sunday, November 11, and on Thanksgiving morning. Contact Karyn Miller if you would like to sing! Adapted from the Catholic Update (excerpt) Submitted by Bonita Revolt Halloween has grown into a major secular holiday in American culture. But for those who don t value devotion to the saints, the Eve has become hollow instead of hallow. Take away the saints and our beliefs about the dignity and destiny of human beings, and the only thing left is pre-christian superstition regarding the dead. Halloween is like our Mardi Gras before a very serious Lent. We should be able to laugh at the dark side and dress up in costumes and have parties. The party will take place at the historic Village Club of Western Springs and feature hors d'oeuvres, live music, and 25 wine samplings from more than half a dozen wine vendors.
