2 esus emerged from his 40 days in the wilderness a changed man. No longer the carpenter of Nazareth, J he now understood himself to be a man with a mission and the Temptations make it clear Satan himself could not sidetrack him from that mission. The mission: proclaim God as our merciful Father who welcomes the sinner and seeks out the lost. So how did Jesus begin? He called twelve simple people to stay with him, to share his journey and to continue his mission. The twelve he called weren't Ph.D. s in Scripture or Theology but working class people like truck drivers, secretaries, factory workers, store clerks. He called these folks to stay with him, to get to know him. These men ate every day with him, listened to what he preached and watched who he talked with and how he treated them. They heard his message; they saw him heal; eleven of them watched as he and Peter went at it after he told them he would be rejected and put to death. They heard him call Pharisee hypocrites and argue with scripture scholars. Then they experienced the Last Supper and watched him die. They shared his journey. They also shared his resurrection. They experienced the risen Lord and heard him forgive them for abandoning and rejecting him. They experienced the One who welcomes the sinners and forgives. Then, they heard: Go, make disciples of all nations! Today, this mission is ours. That command wasn t just for the 12 Apostles or even just for the disciples of the first century. Jesus has repeated the commission to make disciples of all nations to each generation of Christians for the past 2,000 years which means he s given that commission to you and me. We are to be the missionaries of Christ to our time and place. The Holy Father in his book The Church of Mercy asks some pertinent questions of us who have this task. Do we know how to speak of Christ, of what he represents for us, in our families, among the people who form part of our daily lives? Faith is born from listening and is strengthened by proclamation. (p.55) We preach with our lives: how we treat others; how we live our marriages and raise our children; how we speak among family, friends, those we work with and those at school; how we clothe the naked, feed the hungry and thirsty, care for the sick, minister to prisoners and mourn the dead. To have faith in Christ is to live the Gospel. So, what s the Church s plan to make disciples? What s the Archdiocesan plan? What the parish plan? What s your plan? For us older members, planning and carrying out a mission belonged to someone else: to Rome, to the Archdiocese, to the clergy and religious. The people were neither part of the plan nor responsible for carrying it out. Today, that s no longer the case. The Holy Father and the shrinking priesthood have made that very clear. The Pope told us his plan in his book Evangelii Gaudium, in the encyclical Laudato Si, and in The Church of Mercy. Archbishop Cupich has told us his plan in the letter he sent out a couple of weeks ago. Our parish has tackled the issue in the Parish Transformation Project a couple of years ago when all were invited to participate to look at how we were to carry on the mission of the Church. I don t believe most of us thought we all would be held responsible for the mission. Many, I think, still think it s someone else job, not mine. That couldn t be more wrong. Every baptized Christian has been called to make disciples, every single one of us! We have been called to stay with him, to share his journey and continue his mission. My hope is that as our parish emerges from this Lent all of us may be more committed to our mission, to planning how we can best accomplish our mission and then do it together. Let s spend the remainder of Lent praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance. Inspired by the loving nature of our Patroness, we at St. Louise de Marillac parish work together to strengthen our faith in Christ Jesus, grow in holiness and live our faith in relevant service to our parish and community. St. Louise was the cofounder, along with St. Vincent de Paul of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, a congregation of laywomen dedicated to teaching and hospital work. Louise was a member of the powerful Marillac family and was well educated. Poor health prevented her from joining the strict order of Poor Clares, and in 1613 she married Antoine Le Gras (secretary to Queen Marie de Medicis of France), by whom she had a son, Michel. Widowed in 1625, she had already chosen Vincent de Paul as her spiritual guide, and he encouraged her to undertake charitable works. Louise trained girls in the spiritual life and taught them to assist in visiting, feeding, and nursing the needy. In 1663, Vincent de Paul founded the Daughters of Charity with Louise as their superior. Because they were neither enclosed nor called nuns, their concept pioneered in bringing women into religious service outside the cloister. By the late 20th century, the Daughters of Charity became Roman Catholic Church s largest congregation of women. Be diligent in serving the poor. Jr. High Lock-In All seventh and eighth graders at St. Louise and Faith Formation are invited to the Jr. High Lock In on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9. Cost: $10, includes all activities and food. 5 BABY BOTTLE COLLECTION TODAY Today we are collecting the baby bottles which were distributed last week for Women s Care Center of La Grange, a local crisis pregnancy center. Leave the bottles in the baskets at the entrance to church. If you forgot your bottle today, bring it to the church or the rectory next weekend or during the week. Thank you for caring for the littlest ones and their moms and dads! Visiting Churches on Holy Thursday On Holy Thursday evening, there is a tradition of visiting churches as a way of accompanying Christ during his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane and subsequent arrest. Come and join us as we visit three area churches after the 7:00 p.m. Mass-St. Mary, St. Barbara and St. Francis Xavier. A short prayer is said at each church and then we go on to the next site.
