2 In the Fall of the year I m sent a list of the monthly collections taken by the Archdiocese for the needs of the Universal Church. It s a daunting list for there is so much need. And these collections are in addition to the offerings we make for our own parish. I find the words of St. Paul encouraging when I look over all those collections. You are well acquainted with the favor shown you by our Lord Jesus Christ: how for your sake he made himself poor though he was rich, so that you might become rich by his poverty. I am about to give you some advice on this matter of rich and poor.the willingness to give should accord with one s means, not go beyond them. The relief of others ought not to impoverish you.everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver. (I Cor. 8:9-12 & 9:7) St. Paul puts the whole concept of giving within the act of the Lord: look what Jesus has done for you. Now go and do likewise. Our giving should be an act of thanksgiving to God for all God has done for us. Someone has called this the worship of God with our money. That s the context for our giving. Then he becomes very practical: don t make yourself poor by giving more that you can afford. Give gladly and graciously, but keep it within your means. But before deciding how to approach this list of collections, remember that charity begins at home. Our primary responsibility is to keep the mission of the parish well provided for. That s more than paying bills; it s providing for the mission of Christ ( Go make disciples ) here at St. Louise. I present this list so you can budget for the coming year. Look over the list and decide how much you have to spend. Then, choose the ministries you want to support and can afford to help. You can disregard the rest without guilt. We cannot support every need or good work, but we can support some. Keep in mind, our contribution combines with thousands, perhaps millions, of others making for a sizable donation. Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be. This journey is easier sung about than done, It takes humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles, positions of honor, money, and power are not requirements of the kingdom of God. Jesus says and demonstrates in today s Gospel that members of God s kingdom must hold in their embrace the most inconsequential of persons, for that person is identified with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to the intuition of the world of Jesus time, as it does in ours. The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the shedding of unnecessary, unimportant, false, and burdensome attachments that earthly power demands. Prayer for Life God of life and love, You created us in your image and sent your Son to bring us life, from conception to natural death. Empower us to work for justice for the poor. Nourish us that we may bring food to the hungry. Inspire us to cherish the fragile life of the unborn. Strengthen us to bring comfort to the chronically ill. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and respect. Bring us one day into the glory of everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. HOLY LAND CRAFTS Next weekend, there will be a representative of the Catholic Christians Community in the Holy Lands of Jerusalem and Bethlehem displaying olivewood handcrafted religious figurines and articles. The community depends mainly on olive carving and tourism. Displaying these religious articles abroad for sale helps these Christians survive and keep and preserve their community. The articles are beautifully hand crafted and reflect our faith and love for the Lord. Please take a look after Mass at what they have to offer. Witness To Life Every Christian is called to work for the common good and against the evils and injustices of their day. We all are called to witness to life in whatever job and setting God places us. While the struggle to defend human life in America and worldwide is far from over, pro-life youth today are showing us that the pro-life movement is in promising hands. 4 MUSIC AND PRAYER The St. Louise Music Ministry is hosting an hour of music and prayer on Tuesday, September 29 in church. This special event is for all of the ministers of the Mass, including Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Ushers. MEN S CLUB MEETING All men of the parish are encouraged to attend the first meeting of St. Louise Men s Club at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 25 in the Marillac Room. The new Men s Club is a merger of the Holy Name Society and the Dad s Club. The Men s Club will be built on the three pillars of Faith, Service, and Community. A variety of events are planned for the coming year. We look forward to seeing you. B.E.D.S. Needs Laundry Volunteers B.E.D.S. is looking for six volunteers to launder linens and towels once a month in their homes during the shelter season which runs from October 1 to May 15. There would have been more I love you s, more I m sorry s. Don t worry about who doesn t like you, who has more, or who s doing what. But in government, in business, and in education, there are also people who strive for power, authority, for recognition, for vain glory. The disciples of Jesus were not different, and neither are we. The command of Christ is for us to listen to him and learn from him.
