2 astor s Corner with Father Denis I came across an article by Canadian Fr. Thomas Rosica, CEO of Canada s Salt and Light Median Foundation and English Language Media Attache of the Holy See, and thought what he had to say might contribute to our thinking about the abuse crisis in the Church. He begins by acknowledging that there are many theories about the case of the current crisis. He says: In some misinformed minds, the current abuse crisis is caused by obligatory celibacy for the priests in the Latin Rite, homosexual members of the clergy and episcopacy, alcoholics, bishops unwilling to submit their resignations, etc., yet there is one glaring word that many avoid speaking: the evil of clericalism that is at the root of the crisis. What is clericalism? An easy definition is provided by Wikipedia: excessive devotion to the institutional aspects of an organized religion. Rosica elaborates: Clericalism means focusing fundamentally on the things of the clergy and, more specifically, the sanctuary, rather than on bringing the Gospel to the world. Clericalism infects the clergy when they become too self-referential rather than missionary. But infects laypeople worse, when they began to believe that the fundamental service God is asking of them is to become major donors, recipients of Papal honors, ministers of hospitality, lectors or extraordinary minister of the Eucharist at church rather than to live and spread the faith in their families, workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, and in places where we priest cannot enter. He quotes Pope Francis: We priests tend to clericalize the laity. We do not realize it, but it is as if we infect them with our own desires. And the laity - not all, but many - ask us on their knees to clericalize them, because it is more comfortable to be an altar server than the protagonist [central character] of a lay path. We cannot fall into that trap - it is a sinful complicity. It is impossible to think of a conversion of our activity as a Church that does not include the active participation of all the members of God s People. Such is the case with clericalism, an approach that not only nullifies the character of Christians, but also tends to diminish and undervalue the baptismal grace that the Holy Spirit has placed in the heart of our people. Rosica quotes the Holy Father extensively because clericalism has been for a long while the focus of Jorge Mario Brogoglio. Clericalism, whether fostered by priests themselves or by lay persons, leads to an excision in the ecclesial body that supports and helps to perpetrate many of the evils that we are condemning today. To say no to abuse is to say an emphatic no to all forms of clericalism. If clericalism is the problem, the solution put forward by Rosica involves the hierarchy and the People of God. Regarding the hierarchy he says: It is not enough for us to simply feel terrible about the situation and say that we are sorry. We must dismantle forever the structures and systems that allowed such a moral catastrophe to engulf the church. And these structures include the process of appointments of bishops and the naming of Cardinals. Until the church at her highest levels names this great evil of clericalism and rids the church of it, we will not move forward. Regarding the laity Rosica quotes the Holy Father: The layperson is a layperson and has to live as a layperson with the power of baptism, which enables him or her to be a leaven of the love of God in society itself, to create and sow hope, to proclaim the faith, not from a pulpit but from this everyday life. And, like all of us, the layperson is called to his or her daily cross - the cross of the layperson, not of the priest. Rosica clarifies this, as quoted above, saying the layperson needs to live and spread the faith in their families, workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, and in places where we priests cannot enter. In other words, the abuse in the Church cannot be solved by the Pope or any group of bishops and priests. This evil can only be eradicated by including the laity in church leadership choices and by the laity accepting their own responsibility in proclaiming the Gospel. Frankly, I don t see either of these happening overnight nor without strong opposition from both the clergy and the laity. That said, I believe Rosica hits the nail on the head! Fr. Denis Condon

Chris Aleti and those who traveled with him to Uganda. The group will speak of the experiences they had, while on a two week mission trip in Africa. Dear Parishioners, I am most grateful for your prayers for my health. I think you have good God-connections! Since my lung cancer diagnosis August 1st a year ago, I have been ache and pain free. This has affirmed my decision not to go the chemotherapy route. My life now is like it was before the diagnosis, except for two coughs a day. I go to the Tribunal in Chicago twice a month and Villa Desiderata in McHenry for Mass twice a month. I'm still the landscaper of my acre of Cheeseland; still the pool cleaner, window washer, cook and dishwasher emptier! I try to ride my bike a mile in the neighborhood when weather allows. I'm quite blessed. Thank you for being part of that blessing. Fr. John Hergenrother Page 3

6 Dear Parish Family, Every year, the deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago come together to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. We do this with a dinner and a fundraising event. This is our sole fundraiser of the year and it will take place on October 7. Money raised at the St. Francis Dinner support several charities that serve the poorest and most marginalized (orphans, the mentally ill, the homeless, and the recovering). It also goes toward continuing theological and ministerial education for deacons and wives, a mutual aid fund for deacons in need, and operating funds for the Diaconate Council. This year, I am asking if you d be interested in purchasing a raffle ticket, or booklet. Tickets are $5 each, or six for $25. The first prize is $1,000. There is also one $500 winner, two $100 winners, and six $50 winners. If you d be interested in taking a chance (winner need not be present!) and purchasing a ticket (or book), please let me know. I have raffle tickets and will either get them to you or you can mail me a check, and I will complete the raffle ticket information for you. Please call me at (708) if you are interested. Thank you for supporting the deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Jane and I truly are blessed to be part of St. Louise de Marillac Parish. God bless you all! Our Lady of Sorrows Feast day is September 15th The title, Our Lady of Sorrows, given to our Blessed Mother focuses on her intense suffering and grief during the passion and death of our Lord. These seven sorrows of our Blessed Mother included the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt; the loss and finding of the child Jesus in the Temple; Mary s meeting of Jesus on His way to Calvary; Mary s standing at the foot of the cross when our Lord was crucified; her holding of Jesus when He was taken down from the cross; and then our Lord s burial. In all, the prophesy of Simeon that a sword would pierce our Blessed Mother s heart was fulfilled in these events. For this reason, Mary is sometimes depicted with her heart exposed and with seven swords piercing it. More importantly, each new suffering was received with he courage, love, and trust that echoed her fiat, let it be done unto me according to Thy word, first uttered at the Annunciation. Our Lady of Sorrows is the patron saint of: thonamed Dolores, Dolorita, Lola, and Pia; Order of the Servants of Mary; the Congregation of Holy Cross; Poland; Malta; and the state of Mississippi. -- Deacon Dave Brencic St. Louise Creativity Club is in need of staff to work from Monday - Friday from 2:20 - approximately 6 pm. Please contact the school office if you are interested at (708) Please share with anyone you think would be interested as well.
