2 Archbishop Cupich has called on all of us to grow in our faith, to reflect on what it means to be Catholic. Most of us already have an idea of that it means to be Catholic but rethinking what we take for granted can help us come to a better understanding of who we are as the People of God. Fr. Louis Cameli, a priest of the Archdiocese, has provided seven reflections to help us, the first of which I present here. Over the next several months, I will publish the other reflections. If we all take a few moments to read the reflection and then think about the questions Fr. Cameli raises at the end of each one, it can give us a chance to renew our faith. I believe in the Catholic Church, I belong to the Catholic Church: What does that mean? M any people who are born Catholic take belonging to the Church for granted. That have never thought much about it. Certainly, it makes a difference to them, especially at the important time of life, such as the birth of a new child in the family, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, sickness and the death of a loved one. They can also take pride in the Church at certain high moments when, for example, they follow Pope Francis journeys and hear his message of God s mercy. They can also feel shame, when scandalous and abusive behavior in the Church surfaces for public view. But most of all, in their experience, Catholics who say they are Catholics point to their parish as the place where they feel they belong. Often, there are very strong emotional ties to the parish. It is, after all, the place associated with essential moments of family life from birth to death. For many people, there are strong ties of history. The parish where they worship today is the same parish built by their grandparents or even their great-grandparents. With all these ties of history and felling, the parish is often a very firm spot for Catholics to plant their identity. Although the Church, for many, can be a stable reference point in a shifting world, in fact, changes in our society culture and demographics, for example can have a deep impact on believers. This fact makes it worthwhile to re-visit and reflect on what it means to believe in the Church and belong to the Church today and in our circumstances. When we reflect on the Church, its external structures and institutions, such as the parish and the Church s hierarchical leadership, can claim considerable attention. These elements do represent an important dimension of the Church, but they do not capture the Church s essence. The heart of the Church involves a set of interlocking relationships of believers with Christ and with each other. The heart of the Church also involves a mission or a purpose that carries the Church beyond itself to work for the coming of the Reign of God and the transformation of the world we live in. The Church emerges from the life and ministry and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Pope Leo the Great said that everything that occurred in the life and ministry of Jesus and in his death and resurrection has passed over into the life of the Church and her sacraments. So, to deepen our faith in the church as well as our sense of belonging to the Church, we can do no better than to return to the Word in Sacred Scripture. There we will find our roots and our identity as a people who believe and belong to the Church of Jesus Christ. Question: How do I understand myself as a Catholic? How would I begin to explain my belonging to Jesus and to his Church to someone who was unfamiliar with the Catholic Church. Fr. Denis April 17, 2016 Page 2

SUMMERFEST UPDATE Since last fall, our St. Louise SummerFest Committee has been left in the dark by multiple carnival vendors and, after a valiant effort to find another reliable carnival company without success, it is now too late to lock in any carnival company for our 2016 season. In the best interest of our bands, sound stage supplier, vendors, parishioners, neighbors, Brook Park District 95, and the Village of lagrange Park, the very tough decision to cancel this year s SummerFest was reached. It is through no fault of our committee members that we have to cancel SummerFest. They worked diligently over many months to compensate for the way we were treated by the first carnival provider and a core group of committee members worked very hard to secure a second one, who didn t have the courtesy to show up or communicate with St. Louise when promised. We now have more time to plan for the 2017 season and look to other providers to meet our needs and dates. We will plan for an entertaining event for ALL ages tweens included! Summerfest will be moved to the 4th weekend in July to avoid the trolley pub crawl and the Brookfield car show. Please join us for SummerFest 2017 from July 20th-23rd, We appreciate the support you have shown for SummerFest, and hope we can count on you for continued support to push our great event to better heights in Your 2016 SummerFest Committee. THE SHEPHERD S FLOCK In Christian art, the earliest depictions of Jesus Christ were not of his crucifixion or of his resurrection. The first known renderings of Jesus show him as the Good Shepherd, the image put before us in today s readings. In the Gospel passage Jesus reveals that he is the shepherd and his followers are his flock. In the first and second readings, we are told more about the flock. The passage from Acts assures us that both Jews and Gentiles are called to follow Jesus. It is faith, not birthright, that makes us part of the company of believers. In the passage from the book of Revelation we learn that the flock that follows this Lamb of God will also be washed in his blood. They will endure a time of trial before they enjoy eternal life. Be assured of the promise, we are told, but know there is a price to be paid. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. April 17, 2016 Page 3
