2 An issue arose 10 days ago when the contractor working on the parking lot exposed the heating pipe connecting the boiler, which is housed in the school, with the church. The men working on the parking lot had to dig around and under that pipe in order to build up the area underneath it and around it to match the rest of the parking lot. When it was exposed, they discovered the pipe s protective casing had crumbled and the pipe was leaking. This discovery immediately stopped the work on the parking lot until a decision was made as to what to do with that pipe. At the recommendation of the Construction Manager from the Archdiocesan Facilities & Construction Department and our Business Manager I decided the best option for the parish was to install an independent heating system for the church. The plan included replacing our current AC system with a modern one which can control both heat and cooling from a smart phone rather than having to use the computer in the school office. We have received a proposal to complete the work for about $229,000. Since this additional expense will empty out our accounts, I suggested we immediately begin replenishing those accounts using the Capital Improvement line on our envelopes or the Capital Improvement button on e-giving. I suggest we also re-think our 2nd Collection giving, choosing what we think is important, ignoring the others and giving what we may have given to them to the parish. Charity does begin at home. As I promised last Sunday, here is the list of 2nd Collections for the coming year. I have place and asterisk (*) before the ones I choose to support. Please feel free to choose your own. Second Collections /18 Catholic Campaign for Human Development Nov. 19th *Retirement Fund for Religious Dec. 10th The Church in Latin America Jan. 14, 2018 *Annual Catholic Appeal Feb *Catholic Charities May 13th *Fund for the Retired Priests June 10th Peter s Pence July 1st *Seminary Collection Sept. 23rd World Mission Sunday Oct. 21st Catholic Campaign for Human Development Nov. 18th *Retirement Fund for the Religious Dec. 9th If we take the money we budget for some of these collections and give it to Capital Improvement, we can begin to build up our financial accounts. Please remember we depend on the top line contribution [ My Stewardship Offering ] for the day-to-day operation of the parish, so please do not lower that figure to put something on the Capital Improvement line. Capital Improvement contributions need to be over and above the Stewardship Offering. In this case we cannot rob Peter to pay Paul. The other suggestion I mentioned: for those who may not have fulfilled your pledge to last year s Annual Catholic Appeal, if you still can afford to make that pledge, please give it to our Capital Improvement. The outstanding pledges stands around $5,000 which would benefit the parish. Plus you can deduct these payments from your taxes. I ve concentrated on the parking lot and the church heating and have failed to bring you up to date on the parish kitchen. I ve had a conversation with Ms. Sheri Sauer this week. She is a parishioner who has headed up this project for us: doing kitchens is her business. She informed me that there was a problem. (Surprise, surprise!) The tiles we had chosen for the kitchen floor come from Spain and we had been told it would take 6 to 8 weeks to deliver them. That was back in mid-august. But the person responsible for making that order didn't put it in until the beginning of September and word from Spain is that they can t guarantee delivery for another month maybe! We decided to cancel that order and buy something local that could be delivered by Wednesday. Finally, one thing that works out well. (I still won t believe it until I see for myself that the tiles are in the kitchen.) And the saga goes on. Father Denis Page 2

"For the Love of Jerusalem" is an interfaith event bringing together Christians, Muslims and Jews to explore each other's faith and learn from one another what it means to be children of Abraham who equally love Jerusalem. In this highly conflicted and divisive world, it is easy to recognize the differences among people. True joy is found, however, when we share what we have in common with one another. Three exceptional speakers will facilitate the discussion. See the back page for further information regarding childcare and lunch opportunities. All are welcome. Page 5
