2 astor s Corner with Father Denis Once again the People of God have received a sucker punch. The reports by the Attorney General of Pennsylvania following on the heels of the Cardinal Mc Carrick story have dealt the People of God a 1-2 punch leaving us reeling. Fr. Joe and I are hurt, outraged, and upset by these stories as, I am sure, most of you are. In a time when we are talking about personal relationships with Christ, committing ourselves as disciples, the actions of these priests and bishops knock us for a loop. The victims of these men suffered life changing wounds. The thought of their suffering breaks my heart. How horrid that the very ones preaching the love of God would so deeply harm God s children! We all need to pray for the victims - and their families - that their faith in the Lord be not shattered because of the sins of these men. May the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, holds the victims close and bring healing of mind, body and soul. As awful as these reports are, this is not the first time we have heard of child abuse. What makes these stories more horrific is the perpetrators: clergy. But we have heard of clergy sexually abusing kids from the 1990 s. Why are we still shocked by these reports? Child abuse is nothing new to the human race. We hear it all the time. Regularly the media report child abuse. The latest is the group in the desert out west, but closer to home we have the scandal within the Chicago Public School System. Beyond even that we have the parade of people who show up in the news accused of child abuse. More disturbing, researchers tell us that most of the child abuse occurs in the home perpetrated by family members. And it s been reported that Thailand is the Disney World of child sexual abusers from around the globe! However, when we hear of clergy abusing children, we are outraged and furiously angry. Perhaps there s a lesson in all this, albeit a lesson we don t really want to learn. Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners. (Mark 2:17) All who are called by Christ are sinners. None of them are righteous. But aren t we expecting righteousness from the ordained? Don t we expect the popes, cardinal, bishops, priests, deacons, sisters and brothers to be a cut above everyone else? If what Jesus said in Mark s Gospel is true, we are no better than the next person. So why are we shocked to find the clergy are sinners? I m not in any way trying to excuse or reduce the enormity of the abuse and cover ups that have occurred. I know most of us are as upset to discover parents or any adults who preys on children. It s a horrible crime, a crime that should be punished. My point is we expect perfection from the clergy and when we find it s not there, we get all upset. Perhaps we need to face the reality St. Mark presents: Jesus calls sinners not the perfect. We should pay attention to the voice of both Boston s Cardinal O Malley and Pope Francis: The Church is not a museum of saints, but a hospital for sinners. The Pope has even described himself as a sinner and he meant just that! St. Paul said, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong. The leaders of our Church are all chosen by the Lord. Do the math. Sexual abuse of children is a global phenomenon which we all need to take seriously. We are right to be outraged when we discover any adult preying on kids and we ought to be - no matter who they are. We need to face this abuse in our Church, in our nation and around the world. These are our kids and we need to protect them. We need to learn from this experience and pray to the Spirit that we learn what it is the Spirit s trying to teach us. Evil can t be overcome unless it is named and confronted. We need the wisdom only the Spirit can give and the strength only Jesus can provide. Now is not the time to weaken in our trust in the Lord present in our Church in the good people who make it up but to strengthen it. We will not be overcome by the power of evil. But we need to learn how to fight it. Fr. Denis Condon

Training Session Available at Your Parish St. Louise De Marillac If you have interactions with children, under the age of 18. Volunteers or Employees. Teaching, Coaching, Scouting, You should register for the upcoming VIRTUS Awareness Session. If you have already taken a Virtus Training Session, you DO NOT need to sign up for another one. You must keep current with your monthly articles. For those who need to take Virtus. You must register online, because of space and materials. You cannot just walk in the day of the Session. The next Virtus Training Session will be held Sunday, September 9th in Marillac Room, St Louise School starting at 1 pm and the session will last 3 hours. (1 pm to 4 pm) To register for the Virtus Training Session go to: You must obtain a login and password. The Archdiocese requires all volunteers and employees over the age of eighteen who are working with children and youth under the age of eighteen to comply with the policy. To comply with the policy one must take the following steps. 1.Submit to a background Check. 2.Attend a Virtus Training Session. 3.Complete the Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System (CANTS) form. 4.Sign an acknowledgement that the employee or volunteer has read, understands, and agrees to abide by the Code of Conduct. Youth Choirs Teen Choir SLM Teen Choir is open to high school and college students, as well as 7th and 8th graders who are also in SLM Children's Choir. The choir usually sings at 9:30 on the second Sunday of the month (with a few exceptions). We meet for donuts in the Marillac Room at 8 AM, and rehearse until the 9:30 Mass. First rehearsal for students who attend St. Louise School will be Thursday, August 30. New Grief Support Gathering At Hitzeman Funeral Home on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Through these events, Hitzeman has found that they can assist the families they serve through the fog of emotions and despair. Grief is a natural reaction to the loss of a loved one. 6 Dear Parish Family, Every year, the deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago come together to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. We do this with a dinner and a fundraising event. This is our sole fundraiser of the year and it will take place on October 7. Money raised at the St. Francis Dinner support several charities that serve the poorest and most marginalized (orphans, the mentally ill, the homeless, and the recovering). It also goes toward continuing theological and ministerial education for deacons and wives, a mutual aid fund for deacons in need, and operating funds for the Diaconate Council. This year, I am asking if you d be interested in purchasing a raffle ticket, or booklet. Tickets are $5 each, or six for $25. The first prize is $1,000. There is also one $500 winner, two $100 winners, and six $50 winners. If you d be interested in taking a chance (winner need not be present!) and purchasing a ticket (or book), please let me know.
