2 astor s Corner with Father Denis Janus, a Roman god, gave his name to our month of January. Since he was a god with a face looking toward the past and another looking to the future, it seemed apt. As we approach the celebration of the New Year many folks take to making resolutions for the new year based on a recognition that some things that occurred in 2018 need to change in [The Church calls that an examination of conscience!] And, as we know from painful experience, resolutions made at the beginning of the year don t make it to Ash Wednesday. Such is the nature of the human race. However, this year we face something new, something beyond our choosing or our control. Half way through 2019 our parish will be wedded to St. Barbara s in Brookfield. This is an arranged marriage with the Archdiocese playing Yenta. The next six months will be filled with plans and anxieties, any couple approaching their wedding experiences. There are questions: questions of how we can get to know the in-laws ; will we like them; what if we don t get along, etc. There are question of where the wedding will take place and who ll be there. We don t even know who the pastor will be or what our new name will be or where the pastor will live or where the new parish office will be, etc. We will have to wait weeks, if not months, before these questions are answered. If we only take the look-to-the-future face of Janus, we may work ourselves up into a great frenzy. Perhaps we need to look through the other face of Janus, the face that looks back. This point of view will let us see ourselves as a people, which may give us a different feeling about the future. Among all the parishes of the Archdiocese, St. Louise de Marillac is still relatively young. We are only in our early 60 s while St. Barbara is over 100. Yet in our 63 years we can see the character of a people strong, committed and willing to face contemporary issues. 750 families founded our parish in 1955 and those families broke ground for a school only 10 months later and a year after that broke ground for our church. Both buildings were dedicated in 1958, only 3 years after the parish founding. 750 families committed themselves to celebrating the faith and teaching their children and paying for those buildings. These were people of courage and faith in God and in themselves. Five years later, they took on responsibility for an addition to the school all the while building a vibrant community. We were a mere tween-age parish when the Second Vatican Council finished its work and implemented major changes shaking up the entire Church. While some railed against all the changes (and some continue to do so) the folks of St. Louise weathered the storm of those changes and moved on. The thespians of the parish started the Spirit of St. Louise in 1985, a tradition the St. Louise Players carry on today. Also in 1985, our parish embraced the Comboni Missionaries as members of our parish extending our concept of church far beyond La Grange Park/Brookfield. In 1992 St. Louise de Marillac was among the first parishes to participate in the archdiocesan long-range planning program, Tomorrow s Parish. We participated in several more such programs most recently the Renew My Church program which will bring the changes mentioned above. Paging through the 40th Anniversary book, I found the much younger faces of folks who still grace our church and the faces of those whose funerals I have presided over. All these men and women were dedicated to making this parish a good community and weathered whatever storms lashed against it. I personally have witnessed the commitment of our people to our parish and school. When I arrived, the school was nose diving into extinction. By God s grace, the help of Sr. Mary Paul, then Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese, and the hard work of the school administration, faculty and parents, we turned things around. Most recently the Archdiocese planned to close our school and, again, the men and women of our parish stepped forward and fought to preserve it. And we prevailed. All the men and women over the past 63 years have built a community of faith and dedication to God and to each other. Though we may face the coming year with some trepidation, we have the example of 63 years to support us. If those who have gone before grew stronger through what they had to deal with, so will we. Since God has led this parish for the past 63 years, I can t imagine any reason God would abandon us now. Each milestone of our past has challenged the members of our parish to embrace reality and rely on God s help. Today is no different. The Spirit is leading us to a new future and, given our past, not only will we embrace it, we will make our new parish vibrant and strong. Fear not: for I am with you always! Happy New Year! Fr. Denis Condon

For questions, contact our Rectory at or Please Join Us! Tuesday, Jan. 8 6:30-7:30pm We welcome you and your family to join us for our Grief Support Gatherings which will occur the second Tuesday of each month. These groups are intended to be social in nature where we can express our support with others that are experiencing the same feelings. We know how losing a loved one affects the core of each family. Whether the passing is sudden or after a long battle with illness, each soul has a story. And everyone has their own way of coping with such a loss; sometimes, we don t know how to start finding a way through the fog of emotions and despair. It s a new year and for the first time, you re facing it without your special person being physically present on this earth. This can be a hard pill to swallow. It may feel as though your grief has intensified as you remember the days of old celebrating this time of year with feelings of joy, hope, and anticipation. Despite the pain and hurt of grief, recognize that the new year can also be an opportunity for you to resolve in the months to come how you will manage grief. Please join us for a lively discussion on grief strategies for the new year. For more information please visit Place: Hitzeman Funeral Home, Brookfield Seats are limited; please R.S.V.P. by January 4, 2019 to or Info@hitzemanfuneral.com.
