2 L ent is almost upon us. Cardinal Cupich has been trying to get us to see ourselves as members of Chicago, not just our parish. When we sing the old hymn, We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord, we proclaim that we are the People of God. In our individualistic society when we are told to look out for number one, the idea that we are to look out for us is not a common notion. Lent can help us with this. Lent gives us the opportunity to allow the notion of the Body of Christ, the People of God to sink in. Lent is our preparation for the Easter celebration of the Paschal Mystery of rebirth: rebirth of the newly baptized, the renewal of the rebirth for the rest of the community. Thomas O Laughlin, an internationally noted liturgical scholar, describes Lent this way:...it is not an individual s sense of having gone astray or an individual s act of repentance or an individual s determination to begin afresh that is being highlighted, but the action of the whole church. We, as a people through the actions of individuals and as a group have sinned, have caused evil, and suffering, have failed to stand up for the truth, the poor, the oppressed; and so we now need to acknowledge our failings and begin a process of re-training and renewal. We find ourselves caught up in a solidarity of evil founded in selfishnessand far less than what we claim to be as the people of God. Lent is presented by the liturgy as the gift of a season where the dark world is challenged by the solidarity of grace which is found in Christ. Christ presents to his people reconciliation with the Father, and we become the renewed people (not just a collection of renewed individuals) in accepting his reconciliation and extending that reconciliation to the world. This is why the universal Church calls us to prayer, fasting and almsgiving during Lent. We are to pray, fast, and give alms together, not just by ourselves. The Church prays; everyone fasts; the community gives alms. We re so accustomed to focus on what am I going to do for Lent that the very idea of what are WE going to do for Lent sounds very odd. Yet, if O Laughlin is correct what we are going to do is the question. Our teens can help us here. They would like to spearhead a collection for Catholic Relief Service. Why don t we embrace that as the community Almsgiving for Lent? Each household can set aside the cost of one meal during the week and bring that money on Sunday to the designated collection spot. If the cost of one family meal is too much, the cost of one meal for one person should work. Our Lenten almsgiving should prompt us to sacrifice for others. It s not supposed to be easy. The teens will talk about this on the 1st Sunday of Lent. Many go to daily Mass during the weeks of Lent which is the community praying together. If you can t make the 8:30 Mass because of work, school, or some other reason, there is adoration on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 and Tuesday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. We can all drop in for a few minutes adoration these days of Lent. On four Tuesday evenings this Lent, we, along with St. Barbara and Divine Infant will have prayer services and a mission talk at 7 p.m. All these events provide us with opportunities to pray with the community. Fasting, never a popular experience, is tougher. However, we do have the Fish Fry and so long as we eat nothing between that and bed, we fast. We have the abstinence from meat on Friday and we all can give up some favorite food. Remember the hungry of the world and in our nation. Fasting reminds us how much we eat while others go hungry each day. Lent reminds us that We as a people-through the actions of individuals and as a group-have sinned, have caused evil, and suffering, have failed to stand up for the truth, the poor, the oppressed. Bringing all this to mind, allows us to appreciate God s great mercy and compassion celebrated during Holy Week. We are God s People, the flock of the Lord. Let s not just give up chocolate for Lent this year. Father Denis Page 2

3 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal Love Your Neighbor as Yourself This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, Love Your Neighbor As Yourself, was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Lenten Evening of Reflection On Tuesday, March 7 at 6pm, join us in the Colonnade Room for a soup and salad supper and then allow St. Francis of Assisi to be your guide on a journey deeper into Lent, the Church s springtime. Fr. Larry Janowski, a Franciscan priest, renowned fiction writer and poet, will take us on this spiritual journey. Tickets are $10 and will be sold after all Masses the weekends of February 18/19 and February 25/26. This event is sponsored by the CWO. Women (and men) of the parish are invited. Contact Helene Clarke, or Kathy Dodaro, for information or tickets. Lenten Regulations Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) for all who have completed their 14th year. Ash Wednesday Schedule Ashes will be distributed on Ash Wednesday, March 1, at the following times: 6:30 a.m. Service 8:30 a.m. Mass 12:30 p.m. Service 5:15 p.m. Service 7:00 p.m. Mass THE HEAVIEST LOAD EASTER PALMS In the coming weeks before Ash Wednesday which this year is March1, we gather our past year s palms in order to burn them and prepare ashes to be used for the Ash Wednesday service. Baskets will be in back of church to collect last year s palms. Please bring in your palms by February 28. A chip on the shoulder is the heaviest load anyone can carry. Page 3

It s for a chair: Saint Peter s chair in fact After the Resurrection, there can be no doubt that the disciples reserved a special place for Simon Peter in the upper room. Later, Peter became the bishop of Antioch in today s Syria, the place where we were first called Christians. From there, he went to Rome, the center of the Empire, where it is said that Peter sat in a chair in the house of Priscilla and Aquila to instruct his flock. Jesus, in entrusting the keys of the Kingdom to Peter and his successors, entrusted his compassion and mercy to them, and charged them with pointing to the Kingdom of God. Compassion and mercy are to resonate through their teaching. Since the ancient sign of a teacher is the chair ( disciple literally means one who sits at the feet of a teacher), Peter s chair has long been treasured. Today there is a symbolic shrine of Peter s chair above the main altar of St. Peter s Basilica in Rome. This monument is the last work of Bernini, a huge bronze throne supported by four doctors of the Church: Augustine and Ambrose from the Western Church, and Chrysostom and Athanasius from the East. 6 Invitation to our Bereavement Support Group Our lives are covered with many types of loss; one of the hardest being the loss of a loved one. I welcome you to journey with others whom have lost a loved one, to share and comfort while continuing to learn to cope and grow in God s love. Whether your loss was yesterday, three weeks, four months or many moons ago, I invite you to join our bereavement support on Tuesday, February 21, at 6:30pm in the Marillac Room, accessible from the east side of St. Louise School near the parking lot southwest corner. That s 1 in 9 people, or more than two times the population of the United States. This year, SLM Youth Ministry will participate in a fast to raise awareness and funds for those who go hungry every day. The program we will use is the Catholic Relief Services FoodFast.
