This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The theme, Come, Follow Me was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed services. After our parish goal of $17,978 is reached, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish. 3 February 4, 2018 Feast of St. Blaise February 3 On the feast of St. Blaise we will have the blessing of the throats asking St. Blaise for his intercession for good health. The blessing will be done at all Masses this weekend. On Super Bowl Sunday our youth will be collecting soup and money to help local charities. It is also our monthly food pantry collection time. Your donations of money or non-perishable food items can be placed at the entrances of the Church next weekend. Thank you. St. Andrew Parish at 156 th & Freeland,Calumet City will have their annual Doughnut Dance (Paczki Ball) on Sat., Feb. 10th. A cash bar and a variety of Polish cuisine will be available for purchase. Doors open at 6PM, with polka music by The Music Company at 6:30 PM. Tickets in advance at the rectory, online at saintandrewparish.com, or at the door $15. For info call Coffee & Comfort - A support group for parents who have experienced the death of a child will meet on Monday, February 5th from 7-8:30 PM in St. Ann Parish Office at 3010 Ridge Rd, Lansing. It will be a place to share stories and confide in others who understand and to discover hope and healing. Meetings will be the first Monday of every month. For information call Lorraine Stephens at St. Jude Seniors will meet for lunch at 12:30 PM on Thursday, February 8th at J.J. Kelley s at 2455 Bernice Rd, Lansing. All are welcome. The Youth Ministry Group will be selling Carson Coupon books for $5 next weekend. The coupons can be used on community days March 1-3, 2018 at any Carsons store. Join us on February 10th for our monthly prayer shawl session in McMahon Hall at 10 AM. Shawls are distributed to those in need of a spiritual lift. All are welcome. If you would like to request a Mass intention in memory of a loved one, for a member of your family, in celebration of an anniversary or birthday, please fill out a form found in the back of church and include your $10 stipend with your request. It may be put in the weekly collection or brought to the Rectory office during business hours. The book of Exodus will be explored for 5 weeks from Tuesday, February 20th - Tuesday, March 20th. All tax credit scholarship donors need is to have an account on mytax.illinois.gov before applying for a tax credit. This process can take up to ten days and involves a mailed Letter ID. Part 1: Request a Letter ID You will need: The primary taxpayer s social security number One of the following: Illinois Driver s License # or Illinois State ID # or Adjusted Gross income from 2016 You will find Request a Letter ID under the Individuals tab at the top of the computer screen. Follow the prompts. You should receive your Letter ID in the mail within 7-10 business days. Part 2: Activate your mytax.illinois.gov account by using your Letter ID You will need: Your Letter ID Primary Taxpayer s SSN and one of approved documents from above. Click the Sign up Now! button in the login box and follow the prompts. Using your information, you will be able to look up your IL-PIN. Use your pin and Letter ID to set your Username and Password and Activate Your Account. Your account is active and you will be able to reserve your tax credit. You may donate to the Archdiocese of Chicago at large or specify a particular Catholic School. Psalm -- Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147). Second Reading -- I have become all things to all, to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23). Gospel -- Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39). Jesus was starting to become very popular, at least with the ordinary people. They had seen how he had cured the sick and cast out demons. The gospel has one unusual sentence about those demons: Jesus did not let them speak "because they knew who he was." (Mk 1:34) Apparently, the demons would have identified him as the Son of God. Jesus knew the people would not understand this and try to proclaim him as their king. Jesus had no intention of living as a worldly king, in comfort and riches. In fact, he came to free people from needing wealth and power. Popularity and wealth do not interest St. Paul, either. When he preaches the gospel, the good news of Christ's resurrection (and ours), he needs no other recompense. (1 Cor 9:18) All he wants is to share eternal life. He specifically refuses to be paid for his preaching, to show that he will be rewarded by Christ. So what do you hope for; what is your goal in life? Do you only feel secure when you have saved enough money and invested it wisely? Do you need other people to make you happy? Or at least a few hundred Facebook friends? Or are you like Job in the first reading: having no hope of escaping a life of drudgery? He eventually found that only by trusting God can anyone be happy, even when things go wrong. We can follow Paul's example of love for all people no matter who they are. Paul's love was not to make others like him. He genuinely wanted to bring the good news to them: by his love for them, Paul showed that God loves them even more. He knew the gospel requires a change of heart, so his love for others helped them to be more open to change. 5 February 4, 2018 Page Five Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Do you ever feel that life is drudgery? Have you ever been ill and wondered about your place on the earth or in the lives of the people you love? Do you sometimes feel rejected or misunderstood? On this Sunday in the early moments of a new year, we reflect on the clarity, consolation, and healing we find in faith. Job muses about the meaning of life; Saint Paul relies on faith as he responds to critics; the sick rush to Jesus, and he shows us God s tender care for those who are ailing and outcast. Not only does he respond to those who come to him; he goes where they are. God seeks us out in our moments of weakness. God will always be with us in such real experiences of human life. REAL LIFE The stories we hear in today s readings are stories of real life. The book of Job is the story of a man who is tested by illness, the death of loved ones, and the loss of friendships. Most of us can we relate to Job. We have probably had moments when life feels like drudgery, or when we awake in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep. Not all were willing to hear the gospel from Saint Paul. They questioned his motives and did not understand his commitment to share the news of Jesus with all. It is not always easy to live as a disciple in today s world, either. Not all will understand our commitment to Christian living. In today s Gospel, Jesus heals Peter s mother-in-law and many others who were ill. Those who are in need seek him out. Even when he goes away to spend time in prayer, his disciples go to find him. Jesus does not seem to have many minutes to himself, which any parent, child, friend, or person committed to service can understand when putting the needs of others first. Real life can be challenging! REAL FAITH The stories we hear today are also stories of real faith. While pushed almost to his limits, Job does not capitulate. He relies on God to be with him through illness, tragedy, and loneliness. Job knows that he truly is not alone. God is with him. Likewise, Saint Paul acts as he discerns he must. No doubt, he had moments of loneliness and felt the pressure of the judgment of others, but he did not waver in his trust in the love of the Lord. As in all things, Jesus shows us what to do. In moments of illness, isolation, and hurt, when direction in life is needed, turn to God in prayer. Trust in the healing touch of the Lord, whether physical healing or the emotional healing needed to endure suffering and pain. Jesus healed many who approached him then, and he continues to reach out to us in our need. Trust in God with real faith to meet the often-complicated circumstances of our real lives.
