2 astor s Corner with Father Denis How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise, I will call on the Lord s name. Ps. 116:12-13 Anniversaries are times to look back at the road we ve traveled and to look forward to the road where we are going. As I look back it seems impossible that 40 years have passed since I was ordained. However, a quick glance at the photos from the day of my ordination show a much younger (and better looking) man than the one I see in the mirror. So much has happened during those 40 years: my family who have supported me and cared for me; people who have come into my life and those who have gone to the next life; mentors who have shaped and formed me; teachers who opened my mind to the Scriptures, theology and teachings of our Church; spiritual companions who have opened my heart and ear to the Lord and challenged me to follow him; and the Lord himself who has led me to places I never thought I d go. In all this I can see his goodness to me. How can I repay the Lord? The answer is: I can t. What can anyone give to God? There s nothing God needs or wants in terms of material things. There s nothing I can buy for him. So, how is one to repay the Lord? Luckily the Psalm gives the answer: the cup of salvation I will raise. I don t know what the Psalmist meant by cup of salvation. Perhaps he was referring to the cup raised during the Passover Seder. To me there s little doubt that the cup of salvation is the cup I raise each time I have the privilege of presiding at Mass; the cup of thanksgiving. of Tahiti sounds fabulous. But everyone can say that about their job and, if they are honest, about their family. We re human. But when I take the time to reflect on what I do, frankly I get chills. I receive the gifts of bread and wine from the people; I stand at the altar and, in the people s name, I offer them to the Father; I call down the power of the Holy Spirit to change these gifts into the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ; and I stand in the place of Jesus as he offers himself to the Father and then I offer him to his people. A few times all this came crashing into my mind as I was holding up the Blessed Sacrament for the Through him, with him and in him... It hit me what I was doing, who I was holding up in offering and whose place I was taking, I almost dropped the Blessed Sacrament. I was really doing this! Me! It was downright frightening! In addition to Mass, people allow me to bring Christ into their lives at the most important times: baptisms, reconciliations, weddings, in sickness and in death. How privileged I am to be allowed to share those moments. It is humbling. It s the people who have taught me what St. Paul said: Consider your own call God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong so that no one may boast in the presence of God. It s a reminder that it s not about me, it s about God working through me. And that, too, is awesome. How shall I repay the Lord? The only way I can. I thank him for his goodness to me by doing the job for which he called me. I will raise the cup of salvation for all to see so we all realize how deep is the love of God for us. I will serve his people as long as I am able. His commitment to us guides, nurtures, forgives us time and again while the love we share here and now with others lets us know of his presence and blessing. I will repay the Lord by being always grateful. Fr. Denis Condon I can t even begin to count the number of Masses I have presided over in 40 years: daily Masses, weekend Masses, wedding Masses, funeral Masses, Anniversary Masses, graduation Masses, etc., etc. I am aware of the old adage, familiarity breeds contempt. Performing the Mass ritual so often week after week, month after month, year after year runs the risk of the whole thing becoming rote. Just dress up and follow the words in the book. But Someone keeps calling me to pay attention and to reflect on what I am doing. Whether it s a packed house or a handful of folks scattered about the church, I occupy a position representing Christ s presence among us. That in itself is awesome. That I should be the one called to pray in the people s name, to break open the Scriptures for them, to bring Jesus into their lives blows me away. Granted there are days when I d rather be turning over in bed than be at the altar and there are days when personal or parish concerns occupy my mind too much and days when a nice small house on the shores
3 Renew My Church RMC Progress Last Monday the Westfield Park Grouping met again to evaluate the ideas that have been given to us for our area. We needed to tighten the scenarios we have put forth so we can present effectively and best communicate how our ideas will strengthen our Church and prepare us for evangelization. The meeting was very tense and difficult since we knew we were making suggestions that will be painful for many parishioners, but are necessary for the good of all. We will meet again next Tuesday to refine our feedback before presenting it to the Commission. RMC CORNER Renew My Church Westfield Park St. Louise, St. Barbara, Divine Infant, Divine Providence Our Westfield Park Grouping met again last Monday. We focused on what s best for the people and the children of our area, RMC not CORNER on what s best for any one parish. That s tough to do, especially when we are suggesting a major overhaul of how Renew we view My Church. There are many questions which have no answers that we can prove or even know with certainty, hence, it s very intense work, highly charged with emotions and fears. Please pray for those of us who have been tasked with these feedback presentations. We must work for the welfare of people s spiritual lives rather than preserve the status quo, which is not working. We desperately need the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We have one, possibly two, meetings left. Please pray! We learned that the process has changed slightly to help us provide the feedback the Cardinal needs to make his decision on how we are to move forward. This addition to the process calls for the four pastors, the principals, and those from all four parishes who to write up our scenarios to meet with the Executive Committee of the Commission: our Vicar, Bp. Manz; the Vicar General, Fr. Ron Hicks; the CFO of the Archdiocese, Ms. Betsy Bohlen; and Fr. Jason Malave who oversees the RMC program. They will examine our feedback to see if what we propose fulfills the Fundamental Principals and the Church Aspirations given to us by the Archdiocese at the outset of this entire process. The Executive Committee will ask questions, make suggestions and perhaps combine some ideas. They, in turn, will present our feedback to the entire Commission who will do the same before passing the feedback along to the Cardinal who will consult with the Presbyteral Council before making his decision. The final decision will not be made until this fall. Pentecost Vigil 2018 Catch the Fire of Pentacost May Can you give one hour of your evening to be with our Lord in prayer? Are you willing to spend time tending the holy fire of faith? St. Louise de Marillac Parish will celebrate Pentecost with an overnight vigil May and we need your help. We all need moments of silence to reflect on what we value and believe about life. Tuning out the noisy world helps people develop the ability to reflect and grow. Silence also facilitates mental prayer at a time when so many are in need of rediscovering it. We need the sacred to help lead the faithful into greater silence, particularly as the world relentlessly gives us noise. Making time for Eucharistic adoration gives us a positive stillness that will restore us. Such stillness a time of recollection, giving us an inward peace, allowing us to draw breath and rediscover the one thing necessary, which we have forgotten. submitted by Marylee Powderly.

Loyola Candle Lighting Ceremony Last Sunday our Children's Choir sang the closing song at Loyola Medical Center's 27th Annual Candle Lighting Ceremony for Organ Donation. This service honored and remembered those who donated organs so that others would live (either after death or as living donors), recipients of organ donation, those awaiting donation, and those who have passed away while waiting. It was a very moving ceremony, and the children did a wonderful job singing "On Eagle's Wings." You might have heard them on WGN News! Thank you to Angela Kovacevich for inviting us!
