2 Tis the season to prepare. Prepare for what? The world s been beating the drum from the beginning of November trying to get us to prepare to spend money on decorations, parties and gifts. Local glee clubs and choirs are preparing for their annual shows while TV s got professional choruses prepared to sing carols which many in those choruses don t believe in. Hollywood sells us block buster movies while The Grinch, Ebenezer Scrooge and Charlie Brown provide us their take on the holiday. Christmas has become entertainment with ads. So what s on your to-do list? As the holiday tornado rips through December we get so caught up in all the preps we scarcely have time to think about the reason for all the celebrating. For the most part Christmas has become a end-of-year buying frenzy with a heavy emphasis on kids. Santa Claus (a Coca-Cola creation) has as much relevance to St. Nicholas as Rudolph. Granted many are moved to help the poor, especially the poor children, and service personnel, which is a wonderful thing. Good cheer wafts through the December air and nostalgic carols takes us back to a simpler time. Great fun. For the religious minded, Christmas has become all about the new-born. Everyone can relate to a new-born wrapped up as it is in hope, wonder and love. All wonderful stuff, but I think we still tend to miss the point. The awesomeness, the hope and the wonder of Christmas is all about the Eternal God willing to become one of us. The Creator of the universe, the Immortal God chooses to enter human life with all is harsh realities. Not long ago there was a song with the lyrics: What if God was one of us? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? (Jesus) though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness (Phil. 2:6-7) Calling Jesus a slob may be offensive to pious ears, but it can shake us awake to what s really going on. Jesus was not born to the rich and famous, but the unknown and poor in a backwater of the Roman Empire. Think of that. And he chose to take the full human route beginning as a single cell in the womb of his mother and growing as any of us has. Other gods appeared in human form but as adults. They never went through the gestation process to infant to child to toddler learning to read and pray becoming a know-it-all teen maturing like we all do. But our God - the Lord of the Universe - did! Wow! Such is the wonder of Christmas. We need to step away from the shows and even from Santa Claus. I don t mean to douse the Christmas spirit, just to ask us to pause a moment. Advent is a season, a time for us adults to meander through the land of the prophets listening to Isaiah. Who is this God that he would take a face like ours when he didn t have to? Why did he do this? What was he trying to tell us? If God had a face what would it look like? And would we want to see. We need to hear the Gospel writers tell us the story. Just a stranger on the bus tryin to get home. What if that stranger still rides the bus? As long as you did it for one of these, you did it for me. How do we prepare for that?! Father Denis If God had a face what would it look like? And would you want to see if seeing meant That you would have to believe in things like heaven And in Jesus and the saints, and all the prophets? Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Tryin' to make his way home? That s Christmas: God becoming a slob like one of us. Forsaking divine prerogatives to become a common laborer nails the meaning of this event. Page 2
