They reply that they must obey God rather than men, proclaiming Jesus to be the Messiah. They are punished and dismissed. The Apostles rejoiced that they had been found worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus. In his vision of the end-time, St. John sees the multitude gathered around the throne of God, proclaiming: Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing. The gospel story recounts one of Jesus post-resurrection appearances. The disciples have been fishing all night but haven t caught anything. Jesus tells them to put their nets into the water and they pull in such a large catch of fish that they couldn t haul them all in. They only recognize him when they realize this miraculous catch. After they have breakfast, Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. He asks him three times, and each time Peter responds that he does. And three times Jesus tells him to feed my sheep. Acts 5:27-32, Revelation 5:11-14 John 21:1-19 Sacraments of Initiation The Three Sacraments of Initiation into the life of Christ are Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Most Catholics are baptized as infants, bringing them into the family of faith at the very beginning of their lives. We baptize as infants because, just as in our human families, the children need to experience love and relationship prior to any intellectual knowledge of faith or family. In the early Church only adults who could make a free decision of faith received the sacrament of baptism. The Sacraments of Initiation were celebrated at the same time. Baptism, for the forgiveness of sins (dying to sin and rising to new life in Christ); Confirmation to receive the fullness of the grace of the Holy Spirit; and Eucharist, spiritual food on earth as foretaste of the eternal banquet in heaven. The Second Vatican Council restored this ancient practice of receiving adults into the Church, after a suitable period of formation, conferring all three Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. After the conversion of the Emperor Constantine in the fourth century, infant baptism gradually became the norm as entire families, free from the threat of persecution, were brought into the Church together. First Holy Communion was received when the faithful were able to have some understanding of the real presence of Christ and an understanding of both the sacrifice and the communion meal shared by the faithful. It wasn t until 1907 when Pope Pius X encouraged frequent communion that the age of reason was lowered to seven years old. The order of the Sacraments was reversed, and Confirmation got pushed back until one was deemed old enough to make a decision for Christ (similar to adult baptism in many Protestant denominations). Earlier this month we celebrated the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil for our adult converts in the RCIA program; and Confirmation for the children in our regular school and religious education programs. Today we will celebrate the Sacrament of First Holy Communion for those in our RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) program.

3 April 18, 2010 Third Sunday of Easter Page Three Today we continue the story of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. These appearances were vital to the early Church in establishing the reality of the Resurrection. Peter and the other disciples have gone fishing, probably because they are uncertain of how to proceed with their mission since the Holy Spirit has not yet descended upon them. In John s gospel, this in-between time last forty days until the Ascension (in the synoptic gospels the Ascension apparently takes place on the same day as the Resurrection). The difference is obvious when we hear Peter in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles boldly proclaiming the Risen Christ compared to his uncertainty in the gospel narrative. Peter s proclamation before the Sanhedrin tells the Jewish leaders that Jesus was indeed the Messiah, raised up by God. The leaders do not want to be guilty of shedding Jesus blood because it would undermine their authority. But Peter tells them that Jesus was God s chosen one as leader and savior, to grant repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. He softens the accusation so that they will be open to hear the message and come to see Jesus as the fulfillment of the Messianic expectation. This is the mission given to the apostles, the Great Commission to go out and proclaim the good news. They, and we, are called to preach and teach in the name of Jesus, and to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of sins. In the gospel narrative the apostles have been fishing all night and not caught anything. When Jesus commands them to lower their nets in the morning, they are astounded at the large catch of fish. In this miraculous catch the disciples recognize the Risen Lord. And Jesus feeds them as he continues to feed us. The gospel concludes with Peter s profession of faith. After the Last Supper Peter denied Christ three times. When he heard the cock crow, he wept bitterly, recognizing his sin. Jesus now redeems him through his questioning. Peter s triple profession of love for Christ atones for his triple denial. His conversion is complete. Jesus gives Peter the command to feed his sheep, telling him that he, too, will have to lay down his life for his people. The conversion stories are important for us because they tell us the reality of this personal encounter with Christ that rearranges our whole way of looking at life; in fact, our whole way of being. The great liturgies we celebrated at the Triduum are designed to bring us that same sense of awe that St. John tells us he experienced in his Revelation. He sees the great multitude in worship around God s throne, with the Lamb at the center who shepherds them to the streams of life-giving water. They are the ones who have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb, indicating that the Christian life can demand everything from us. St. Peter and St. John both remind us that, having experienced the love of Christ, we, too, have been given the power of the Holy Spirit and been strengthened to live out our baptismal grace. Congratulations to our RCIA members of Susie Jablonski, Elon Lester, Earlene McInerney and Julia Park all received the Sacraments of Initiation, entering into full communion with the Church at the Easter Vigil. Please welcome them when you see them at mass and continue to keep them in your prayers. On Saturday, April 10, the Religious Education program hosted a Thank You Luncheon for all their volunteers. We are blessed to have such a wonderful group of devoted men and women who give their time and talent (and often money out of their own pockets) to pass on our faith to the children of our community. I m sure I speak for all of us in expressing our gratitude to all the catechists, aides and volunteers who make the RE program possible. This past Monday the Parents Association hosted Graziano Night. Graziano s graciously donates 25% of the total bill of all who identify themselves as SRB parishioners. All of us in attendance enjoyed a good meal and good company. I encourage all our parishioners to patronize Graziano s in gratitude for their support. On Friday we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Perry was with us again this year to confirm fortyseven of our children, sealing them with the Holy Spirit. Although now fully initiated into the faith, they continue to need our guidance and support. Please keep them, and their families, in your prayers. The children in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) Program will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion at the 9 a.m. mass today. Congratulations to Diane and Melissa Amaya, Franzel Cave, Leilani Echerarra, Gabriel Franco, Alliana Moreno, Victor Ortiz, Diego Sanchez, Maya and Maylene Yee. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers. (continued on page four)

6 Page Six Third Sunday of Easter April 18, 2010 Youth Sacraments New life is all around us this time of year and we are exceptionally grateful as Spring emerges in so many beautiful ways. In our parish this is a time when the presence of God in our midst is celebrated especially in the lives of young people. Ten older children are receiving Eucharist for the first time this Sunday, April 18 at the 9:00am Mass. More than 45 Junior High youth gathered with their Sponsors last Wednesday for a mini-retreat, the final step on their journey to Confirmation. The Sacrament of Confirmation was celebrated Friday evening at 7:00pm with Bishop Perry. Congratulations to all these young people! On the 1 st of May over 40 children from our religious education program and school will receive their First Communion. Let us be grateful for this renewal of life in our community of faith, just as we are for the obvious signs of spring in the natural world. 7 April 18, 2010 Third Sunday of Easter Page Seven Archdiocese of Chicago April 10, 2010 The Honorable Zygmunt Matynia Consul General of the Republic of Poland 1530 North Lake Shore Drive Chicago, IL Dear Consul General Matynia: I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear that President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria had been killed in an airplane crash earlier today, along with so many other Polish government officials, military officers, and cultural and business leaders. I offer my deepest condolences to you and to the families, friends and colleagues of those who died so tragically. At the same time, I extend my sympathy to the people of the Republic of Poland and of Polonia throughout the world, particularly here in the Archdiocese of Chicago, as they grieve the sudden and overwhelming loss of so many of their brothers and sisters. When I celebrate Mass this weekend, I will remember in a special way all those who perished and all who are filled with sorrow at this profound moment of loss for Poles everywhere. This disaster took the lives of people who were on their way to remember other leaders of the Polish nation who had been murdered seven decades earlier in the massacre at Katyn Forest. I learned earlier today that Mr. Wojciech Seweryn, the artist whose father was killed at Katyn and who led the project to construct a Katyn memorial at Saint Adalbert Cemetery in Niles, was among those who lost his life in this terrible accident. May they be forever remembered for this final act of generosity and solidarity, and may God reward them eternally for their love. I pray that the Lord, whose Resurrection we celebrate during this season, and who brings life out of death and hope out of despair, will have mercy on all who died and grant consolation and peace to those who mourn. Sunday, April 25th - 7:30-9:00 p.m. St. Catherine Laboure 3535 Thornwood, Glenview ( ) No Charge. Refreshments served. MUSIC NOTES Several feasts are mentioned in the Bible. In Exodus 12 we hear the story of the Passover. The Israelites, in captivity in Egypt, slaughter a lamb, and smear the blood of the sacrificed lamb on their doorposts. The Angel of Death passes over those homes with marked with blood, sparing the first-born of the Israelites. In the New Testament we hear of Jesus and his disciples, gathering in the upper room for a Passover feast, the beginning of the Eucharist. Hymn 433, At the Lamb s High Feast, refers to both of these Biblical feasts. Jesus, the Lamb is glorified; the victim becomes the victor. In verse 4 we sing of the joy in the triumph of Easter over sin and death. This hymn is set to the tune Salzburg, which originally appeared in a hymnal published in 1678 with no composer credited. Later editions of this hymnal attribute the tune to Jakob Hintze, at that time serving as court musician for the Elector of Brandenburg. The tune may sound familiar, as it is the same melody used for the hymn Songs of Thankfulness and Praise which we have sung several times, most recently this past January.

Keep Up The Good Work! Our Divorced or Separated Parishioners and Friends Church laws regarding separated or divorced Catholics are widely misunderstood, and a campaign is underway to explain and clarify them. When a couple marries, expectations are high, but dreams are shattering when a separation or divorce looms. No one enters the Sacrament of Matrimony wanting the love they share to change, seemingly die, and then have to reenter the lonely world of the rejected. It s challenging to even be open to feel worthy to be loved again, even by God. You and/or someone you know are invited to take another look at church law, ask questions, begin to heal. Wednesday, April 28 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Hope in Rosemont is such an opportunity.
