2 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Dt 4:1-2, 6-8; Ps 15:2-3, 3-4, 4-5; Jas 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27; Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from with in are what defile. Mark 7:15 The musical Fiddler on the Roof begins with the father of the family famously telling the audience that life is simple in their village. Everyone knows who they are because of Tradition! Traditions are rooted in our need to have order in our lives, and the most powerful traditions are religious. They give direction to our relationship with God. That s why there is such order in our Liturgy. No matter how things may be bouncing around us, we have the mysteries of our faith to steady us. But today, Jesus reminds us that traditions can also become obstacles. He quotes the prophet Isaiah: These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. True religion is both internal and external. We open our hearts to Jesus Christ, but then we give expression to what s in our hearts by actions prayer, Sunday worship, and practicing the works of mercy and justice. That is a Godly and meaningful life. Fr. Martin Pable, O.F.M. Cap., Living Faith, Terence Hegarty, Editor Silver Saints Outing Calling all parishioners 65 and older! You re invited to an outing on November 29th to Derby Dinner Theater s production of Holiday Inn. Based on the film, this joyous musical features thrilling dance numbers, laugh out loud comedy, and a hit parade of Irving Berlin songs. Cost is $39.00 which includes transportation, play, lunch & beverages. Reserve your spot by calling or by khovious@stjoechurch.com Marriage Moment Are you a hypocrite? (Mark 7:6) Of course not, but sometimes it s easier to obey the letter of the law than its spirit. So maybe you don t murder anyone, but might you kill your beloved s spirit with criticism? Maybe you don t steal, but are you generous enough? Parenting Pointer The commandments tell us not to lie, steal, murder, or commit adultery. That s pretty clear. However, sins of greed, selfishness, or general meanness are not always as clear. What actions and attitudes create unhappiness in your family? Ask your kids. Welcome our newly Baptized Elijah Joseph Conway Everlyn Skye Richie Caroline Eden Richie Archdiocese of Louisville Family Ministries Office. 4 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Basilica of Saint Joseph Proto-Cathedral Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process whereby adults (and children age 7 and older) enter the Catholic Church. Those who attend the RCIA classes are introduced to what the Catholic Church believes and are given the opportunity to ask questions about those beliefs. Participation in the RCIA does not require you to become Catholic. If you are merely curious about what Catholicism is, please feel free to come. All are welcome! What is it? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults introduces the Catholic faith to non-catholics and those with no formal Christian instruction, including those who may have been baptized Catholic but have not had the opportunity to participate in a faith formation program leading to Confirmation. The RCIA allows the opportunity to ask questions about what Catholics believe and how Catholics worship and celebrate their faith. The first part of the RCIA (the Period of Inquiry) is an open opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and to get to know what makes a Catholic, a Catholic. During the Period of Inquiry, we will discuss the Church s teachings of Jesus Christ, learn about the Mass and the Sacraments of the Church, talk about the importance of Sacred Scripture and Tradition, and learn the importance of prayer. After these Inquiry sessions, people who feel they have an interest in becoming Catholic can continue in the RCIA beyond the Period of Inquiry, receiving instruction in the basics of our faith. As the RCIA continues, participants will have the opportunity to discern, whether or not, they want to receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist). Those who wish to receive the Sacraments of Initiation will receive further formation in preparation for the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. What it is not! The RCIA is not a class in the academic sense. It is a process, a first step in a journey of faith. Those who are curious about Catholicism are welcome in the Period of Inquiry. Those interested in proceeding further, with Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens, are welcome to do so. We meet on Monday or Wednesday evenings at 7 pm beginning September 17, 2018, In the Maloney Room at Flaget Hall. You will choose a Catholic Sponsor to journey with you. We also have Sponsors on our RCIA Team. Classes continue, until the Easter Vigil, where you will make your Sacraments of Initiation at a beautiful Mass. Newly Baptized and Confirmed Catholics are introduced to the Church and their new role as brothers and sisters in Christ. Please contact Robin Leake for information about the RCIA Journey! rleake@stjoechurch.com
