PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney For those who don t know... seminary formation can be quite long. or the men that respond to the Lord, the call to F the priesthood involves six to eight more years of further education. I, myself, had six more years of education following my Engineering degree. My formation to the priesthood was a bit different than most. I broke my formation into two separate threeyear stints. During my first stint of seminary formation while at my home parish in Naperville, I recall a kid smiling at me (who was about the age of a Second grader) as he and his parents approached me after Mass. He told me that he and his class were praying for me. I remember distinctly thanking him and looking up to his parents telling them, It will be because of his prayers that I ll make it to the priesthood! I I had an inclination that I would step out of formation, not knowing if I would be called to return, but here I am a priest! contribute many things to my vocation, but I would be remiss in not acknowledging the prayers from that Second grader and his classmates along with the other people who were praying for me! Today in our readings the Lord reminds us that there is a tremendous need for shepherds! That is still true today. I recently received a notice with news of yet another priest in our Diocese of Joliet who had passed away. I also just read of a parish in Joliet that will not have Sunday Masses due to their priest being out of town and who was unable to find any replacements. This doesn t even begin to touch on the spiritual needs in every hospital and nursing home when help is needed to prepare people to see God. In our first reading the Lord promises us that he would raise up shepherds. I believe the promise will be fulfilled when we do our part and be like those Second graders who prayed for me. I m asking that you continue to pray and encourage people to consider religious vocations. Let us fulfill Christ s command for us: The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. (Luke 10:2)

4 Page Four July 22, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD July 22, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: WITH FEELING The evangelists tell us that Jesus is moved to the depths of his being for others. FIRST READING I shall gather the remnant of my flock and bring them back to their meadow (Jeremiah 23:1-6). God gave leaders to the people of Israel who were supposed to have cared for God s people as a shepherd guards his flock, but they had not done this. They misled them into sinful ways and so misguided them that they led them to ruin. Now God was going to intervene and rescue His flock from the disaster into which they had fallen. God would gather up the remnant of His people and become their shepherd Himself. He would send an anointed one (Messiah), who would lead His flock along the paths of righteousness. SECOND READING You who were once far off have become near by the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:13-18). This reading celebrates the fact that Jesus death and resurrection destroyed all of the divisions that separate us from one another. When God established a covenant with the Jewish people, He was making a choice in their favor. This naturally excluded those who were not Jews. One group observed the law of God; the other did not even know the law. One group lived in peace with the Lord; the other did not even know His name. When Jesus died and put to death the alienation caused by our sins, He destroyed every boundary that separated one person from another. We are now one in Christ. GOSPEL When Jesus saw the crowd, His heart was moved with pity for them, and He began to teach them (Mark 6:30-34). Last week we heard that Jesus had sent His disciples to proclaim the Good News. They had now returned, and Jesus invited them to go to a deserted spot to rest. Yet the crowd did not let them do this. They desperately needed Him. Jesus could see that they hungered for the Truth (that they were like sheep without a shepherd). This Gospel passage displays the tensions of ministry. While it is good and even necessary to take time out to recharge our batteries, there are situations in which this is impossible. Still, we always have to remember that it is Jesus who is the Shepherd (the humility to recognize that we are not the saviors of the world). REFLECTION The compassion of God sends a righteous shepherd to people who have been misled, exiled, and living in fear and trembling, to restore justice, that is, right relationship, among God, the people, and their leaders. The compassion of God is visible in the heart of Christ who invites tired apostles to a deserted place to rest awhile and who is so moved by the crowd that he begins to teach them. The compassion of God breaks down the dividing wall of enmity to reconcile humanity with God through the cross of Christ and tear down the wall that divides Gentiles from Jewish Christians. Jesus is our shepherd, called the Lord our justice. He makes God s fold, giving us access to God in the Spirit, and teaching us what we need to give flesh to God s compassion today. To have compassion is to suffer with and feel with another. To have compassion requires that we pay attention to our sisters and brothers and all creation. We need to see the vast crowd to which we belong, the human family, and allow our hearts to be moved by what we see. But compassion does not end there; we have to do something to respond to what we see and feel. Pope Francis calls us to live the compassion of God in both social and civil life, building bridges, not walls, responding to evil with goodness, and to offense with forgiveness (audience, February 8, 2017). Rest in God. Feel with God. Live the compassion of God. Name the ways in which you have experienced God s compassion in your life. How are you moved by the needs of our sisters and brothers? How do you respond? If you, a family member or someone you know would like more information about our RCIA program, please call the Visitation Rectory Office at Who Loves You More Than ME Be careful of all that can block that personal contact with the living Jesus. The Devil may try to use the hurts of life, and sometimes your own mistakes, to make you feel it is impossible that Jesus really loves you, is really cleaving to you. This is a danger for all of us. And so sad, because it is completely opposite of what Jesus is really wanting, waiting to tell you not only that He loves you, but even more He longs for you. He misses you when you don t come close. Jesus thirsts for you. He loves you always, even when you don t feel worthy. When not accepted by others, even by yourself sometimes He is the one who always accepts you. My children, you don t have to be different for Jesus to love you. Believe you are precious to Him. Bring all you are suffering to His feet and open your heart to be loved by Him as you are. He will do the rest. WORKS OF LOVE ARE WORKS OF PEACE ST. MOTHER TERESA Visit the living Jesus, truly present: Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, in our Adoration Chapel. You ll never go away empty-handed. To become a registered adorer, please call: Joan or Mary

7 Sixteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time July 22, 2018 Page Seven To help Catholic Charities purchase supplies, Visitation's CCW will be taking up a collection at the church exits after Masses on July NEXT WEEK! Helping Needy DuPage School Kids!. It's that time of year... new shoes, new supplies, health exams, etc. Now imagine doing that all on a very limited income. That's reality for plenty of families in DuPage County our neighbors. Fortunately, Catholic Charities/ Joliet Diocese will host a Back-to-School Fair to help children from low-income households in DuPage on August 2nd at Joliet Catholic Academy. Families will be able to get free school supplies, haircuts and more. As you leave church on July 28-29, please make a contribution to this worthy cause. Thank you for helping local children get a good start in the new school year!
