2 Page Two January 21, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Working with UNBOUND makes real my desire to do work with the poor in a global dimension. FATHER BOB BONNOT was ordained in the Diocese of Youngstown, OH. He has served as pastor, associate pastor, high school teacher, Director of Communication services for Diocese of Youngstown and of satellite communication efforts of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Interfaith effort. Visiting a Youngstown priest in El Salvador and the Maryknoll Missions in Panama, Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Brazil, as well as working with the bishop of Ngong, Kenya, strengthened his faith journey. Although retired, he remains involved with the Leadership Team of AUSCP [Association of US Catholic Priests]. He enjoys reading, writing, golfing and traveling. FOUNDED BY LAY CATHOLICS, UNBOUND is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 18 developing countries since 1981 empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and teach their potential. UNBOUND S UNIQUE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the United States who cares about and encourages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of every person in their local community. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney Sometimes when we hear the Scripture stories in the Mass, we can have a misunderstanding on how God actually works in our lives. Let me explain: FROM OUR FIRST READING: The word of the Lord came to Jonah saying, Set out for the great city of Nineveh and announce to it the message that I will tell you. So Jonah made ready and went out. FROM OUR GOSPEL READING: Jesus said to (Simon and Andrew), Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. n both accounts we see God say something, and people I immediately react, without hesitation! But if we read the earlier chapters of Jonah, we would see him running away from the Lord, being swallowed up by a great fish of the sea, being in the belly of the whale for three days, only to spewed out on the shore. This doesn t sound so easy or direct. If we continue to read the other Gospels about the life of St. Peter, we can see St. Peter s failures and weaknesses in responding to the Lord! We missed out on the wrestling that took place in the heart of St. Peter. We don t see the nitty gritty behind the preparation of Jonah and St. Peter throughout their life! know it s true in my life. The Lord didn t just say to me, I be a priest. And then I was! No, there was wrestling with God, there was running (literally and spiritually), there was rejection on my part to receive the Lord s call, but there was also God s patience, mercy, and love. So, don t be discouraged if your response to the Lord isn t as simple and easy as the readings we have today. The Lord was patient with Jonah and St. Peter, He will also be patient with us! The 2018 CMAA is Underway! This month, the Diocese of Joliet has mailed information about the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) to all CMAA donors. The CMAA supports 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the Diocese, (including ours), and our friends and neighbors most in need. 70% of the amount paid over our designated goal of $136,900 is returned for our use. This is a great benefit for our parish! Please review the information you receive and prayerfully reflect on your gift to this year s CMAA. If you do not receive a mailing, please contact the parish office.

4 Page Four January 21, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD Sunday, January 21, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: PROPHETS RELUCTANT, REORIENTED Sometimes God calls us out of the patterns of our day-today existence to take on something new. Though we hesitate we are content with life as it is the call to turn our lives anew is not to be resisted. FIRST READING The people of Nineveh believed God and turned from their evil ways (Jonah 3:1-5, 10). Jesus proclaims that the kingdom of God is at hand and he calls us to conversion. Jonah goes to Nineveh, a pagan city, and he preaches that God is ready to punish the city for all of its sins. The people respond to this announcement with a call to repentance. The king decrees a fast for everyone in the city. He reasons that God might relent and forgive them their sins (which is exactly what happens). Today, as at every Mass, we are called to examine our lives and turn from our sinful paths so that we might respond to God s call. SECOND READING The world in its present form is passing away (1 Corinthians 7:29-31). Christians in the early days of the Church believed that the end of the world was at hand. Thus, St. Paul instructed this community to live as if our worldly concerns were no longer important. We do not know when the world will end, but we can still maintain a proper perspective on our problems if we view them in light of eternity (if we do not allow ourselves to get caught up in our everyday concerns). GOSPEL This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:14-20). This Gospel passage recounts the call of the first apostles: Peter and Andrew, James and John. Both pairs of brothers were fishermen, and Jesus called them from their activities to become proclaimers of the Word of God. The time of fulfillment and the Kingdom of God are that time when God s law would be observed in righteousness. All people would turn their hearts back to the ways of the Lord. Jesus both proclaimed the dawning of that era and was the personification of the Kingdom of God. This is the good news (Gospel) that Jesus proclaims. These first apostles left all that they had and they followed Jesus wherever he went. This is our call as well. We do not necessarily have to leave our homes and families, but we do have to live our Christian calling in such a way that everything else (work possessions, status, etc.) is secondary. REFLECTION Do you like change? Most people do not. Even when we choose a change, familiar patterns of living and ways of being are replaced by newness that often requires a period of adjustment. Moving, for example, can be exciting and at the same time challenging. We pack and unpack, and nothing is familiar to our old routine. We need to learn new systems, choose new doctors, and we miss people we have left behind. Change, whether chosen, invited, or imposed, requires reorienting one s life on many, if not all, levels. Jesus proclamation, This is the time Repent, and believe in the gospel, asked for a similar reorientation of life. Andrew and Simon reorient their lives immediately, abandoning their nets to follow Jesus. So do the Zebedee brothers. Jonah resisted God before he was willing to reorient his life and do what God asked. When the Ninevites responded quickly, Jonah was upset that God redid God s plan and did not destroy Jonah s Ninevite enemies. God created them too and invites all, those we love and those we have trouble loving, into a transformative relationship. Our job is to reorient our lives to become as loving as Jesus proclaimed that God is. Life changes from the moment we are born. Each day, the world as we ve know it is passing away. How do we respond? Will we let the discomfort of the unfamiliar be the cost of reorienting our lives to become so familiar with God, through Jesus, that in us people will see that the change is worth because The kingdom of God is at hand? 11 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time EUCHARISTIC ADORATION OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES I teach 5th through 8 th Grade Science in a Catholic school and feel very blessed that I can demonstrate and explain to my students that Science and Religion can coexist. One example of this is that every week, for 40 weeks, my students and I discuss the development of a baby from conception to birth. They are amazed at seeing the baby that God has created grow and develop each week. What makes these lessons vital and meaningful is that each student spiritually adopts a baby in this world that is in danger of abortion. We pray as a class for those babies, their parents, and their relatives to have a change of heart. During one discussion, a 5 th grader said, I am going home tonight to give my mother a big hug and kiss for having me. Another student said, Any one that thinks about having an abortion really does not know how it will actually feel to hold his/her baby and receive love from his/ her baby. If they did, they would never have an abortion. Another student remarked that their grandmother had 12 children and times were tough, but each of her children was a gift from God. What is awesome is that these ten yr. olds were on the same wavelength as one of our recently canonized saints, St. Teresa of Calcutta who said during her speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC (1994), But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because Jesus said, If you receive a little child, you receive me, so every abortion is the denial of receiving Jesus, is the neglect of receiving Jesus. By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her own problems. The wise words from these children reminds me of this passage: When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wondrous things he was doing, and the children crying out in the temple area, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were indignant and said to him, Do you hear what they are saying? Jesus said to them, Yes; and have you never read the text, Out of the mouths of infants and nurslings you have brought forth praise? And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany, and there he spent the night. Matthew 21:15-17) 45TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROE V. WADE/ DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF THE UNBORN T his Monday, Jan. 22, marks the 45th Anniversary that abortion was made legal in the United States, and is also the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Over 59,000,000 abortions have been performed in the U.S. since I know on this day my students and I will pray for all of the unborn babies in the world and their parents. I also will be going to the Adoration Chapel to pray for them. Would you take a few minutes out of your week to pray for the unborn and for the end to abortion? Life is one of God s greatest gifts and we should respect it from conception to a natural death. The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. An adorer is needed on Saturday from 7-8 pm. To sign up or make an inquiry, call Mary Lewis at or Joan Taylor at January 21, 2018 Page Eleven PRAYER QUILT MINISTRY UPDATE In 2017, the Prayer Quilt Ministry provided 39 prayer quilts to parishioners and friends and relatives of parishioners who are going through a significant difficulty. There are only nine quilters, so we are kept very busy. We meet monthly on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays from 1-4pm. Recently, we were asked if we could add a time for those who are unable to come during the weekdays. In response to this request, we have added a Saturday date to our monthly schedule, in the Parish Center (lower level). Please bring your sewing machine. We provide batting and fabric. The Prayer Quilt Ministry would like to encourage all parishioners to let us know about those who are going through a significant difficulty and who may benefit from the prayers of our congregation and the tangible evidence of those prayers in the form of prayer quilts. The recipients of the prayer quilts may be going through a health issue, facing surgery, be in the military (or just returned from military duty), dealing with grief, emotional concerns, etc. They do not have to be member of Visitation Parish or Catholic. Anyone may offer a prayer quilt to anyone you feel might benefit and appreciate being covered by our prayers. The recipient MUST agree to accept the prayer quilt.
