THIS WEEKEND! As you leave church this weekend, please make a contribution to this worthy cause. Helping Needy DuPage School Kids! It's that time of year... new shoes, new supplies, health exams, etc. Now imagine doing that all on a very limited income. That's reality for plenty of families in DuPage County our neighbors. Fortunately, Catholic Charities/Joliet Diocese will host a Back-to-School Fair to help children from low-income households in DuPage on August 2nd at Joliet Catholic Academy. Families will be able to get free school supplies, haircuts and more. As you leave church today, please make a contribution to this worthy cause. Thank you for helping local children get a good start in the new school year! Thomas Sularz who entered eternal life on July 15, Father Sularz was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Joliet in In his retirement he assisted with weekend Masses at Visitation for many years. He will be greatly missed. NEWS FROM THE P.I.T. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney When a man is to be ordained into the Priesthood, a tradition exists for him to create an Ordination card to share as a hand out to those attending their Ordination and First Mass n the card, there is usually a holy image with O a Scriptural quote. My quote came from today s Second Reading... I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received f course, that call we have received is to be a O son and daughter of our God most High and to become saints! The task can seem quite overwhelming. Yet, it s really quite simple. We just need to let the Lord work in our lives. Again, we think we need to do some great work, great offering, great accomplishment to become a saint, but what is revealed in the Scriptures is that if we would only give the Lord, even the very little that we have, He can do amazing things with it. ook at the Gospel today: we have the story of L the feeding of the 5,000. The people are hungry. Jesus tests St. Philip on what would be required to feed so many. St. Andrew reveals that a boy has five loaves and two fish. You can perhaps assume that it was said in jest. But it is that same food that seems so little which feeds the 5,000. How? With the Lord blessing and multiplying it! What does it mean for us? We need to just give the Lord the little we have. ven if you are overwhelmed and busy with E activity, try giving the Lord five minutes of your day in silence and prayer. Stop in the Adoration Chapel on your way home from work. It seems like very little, but you will be surprised what the Lord can do with even the little we give Him.

4 Page Four July 29, 2018 Scripture Reflections for SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD July 29, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: OUT IN THIN AIR Jesus could have fed the multitude in any number of ways, making food appear out of thin air. But He worked a miracle with what is already a miracle: God s Creation. FIRST READING Elisha feeds a hundred people with twenty barley loaves (2 Kings 4:42-44). Elisha is seen as a miracle worker. Here he is responsible for a miraculous multiplication of loaves that supplies the need of the 100 people who were with him. This is seen as a prefiguring of what Jesus does in the Gospels when He multiplies the loaves and fish to feed over 5,000 people who had followed Him to listen to His teaching. SECOND READING Paul urges the Ephesians to live in a manner worthy of the call they received (Ephesians 4:1-6). God has invited us to a great dignity in being called His beloved children. He has forgiven our sins and healed our brokenness. Now we must live as if we are saved. We must respond to the love of God and live in that love. This means that we must adopt a lifestyle that proclaims the mercy of God. We must live with humility and gentleness and patience. We cannot allow superficial differences to create divisions among us. The Spirit of God is a spirit of unity that binds us together as a family of faith. As with the early Church, people who observe us must be able to remark, See how Christians love one another. GOSPEL Jesus feeds a large crowd with five barley loaves and two fish (John 6:1-15). Visitation Catholic Church The multiplication of the loaves and fishes takes place around the time of the Passover. John includes this detail to remind us that what is happening in this miracle is connected with what would happen during the next Passover: the Last Supper and the death and resurrection of Christ. A boy brings Jesus five barley loaves and two fish. Barley is the food of the poor. He gives it all to Jesus in an act of great generosity and trust, and Jesus transforms it into something even greater. There is much grass in this place, for Jesus is our Good Shepherd who leads us to verdant pastures and gives us repose. Jesus gives thanks and fragments are gathered (a prefiguring of the Sacrament of the Eucharist). There are 12 baskets with fragments, enough to feed all the tribes of Israel, just as the Eucharist nourishes all the tribes of the new Israel, the Church. REFLECTION St. John Chrysostom lived in the 4th century and raised an interesting question in connection with the feeding of the multitudes. Why didn t Jesus simply create food out of thin air? After all, bread and fish were simple fare, lowbrow food not unlike saltines and canned sardines. Could Jesus, who is the One through whom all things were made, not have conjured up something more exciting? Chrysostom responds to his own question, saying that it was because Jesus wished to use the Creation itself as a ground work for His marvels. (Homily 42 on the Gospel of John). Rather than create something anew, Jesus takes what is already at hand and transforms it by multiplying it. In doing this, Jesus teaches us two things: First, He reminds us that Creation itself is already miraculous. Jesus works miracles not to convince us that God can do extraordinary things, but to awaken us to the fact that God does an extraordinary thing holding our world in existence all the time. The ongoing existence of our world is the greatest of God s mighty acts, and the miracles of Jesus reinforces this truth. Second, He shows us that the way that God works in the world is not by discarding the ordinary realities of Creation and substituting for them something new and different, but rather by taking what is already at hand and transforming it. As on old adage of Catholic theology puts it, grace perfects and does not destroy nature. Just as Christ uses the simple food provided by a boy to feed the multitude, so too, He can use the simple substance of our daily lives to do His work in the world. We might look at our lives and ask, like Andrew in next week s Gospel, What good is this for so many? But we are shown that it is good enough, if Christ takes it and blesses it. 6 Page Six July 29, 2018 Get Excited about the Catholic Faith! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Would you like to be baptized? Would you like to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist? Do you feel a calling to inquire about the Catholic faith? ASK LEARN DISCUSS The Fundamentals of our Faith. We invite you to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Our program starts in September. If you, a family member or someone you know would like more information about our RCIA program, please call the Visitation Rectory Office at First Saturday Devotions to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Next Saturday, August 4 8:15 am, in the Church We extend a warm invitation to all parishioners to join us once a month for the Five First Saturdays Devotion in honor of Mary s Immaculate Heart, beginning with 8:15 am Mass. Devotion follows with 45 minutes of prayer, reflection, and meditation. Why five Saturdays? The number five is significant because Jesus told Sister Lucia (one of the Fatima seers) that there are five kinds of offenses and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: Blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception. Blasphemies against her Virginity. Blasphemies against her Divine Maternity. Blasphemies of those who openly seek to foster in the hearts of children, indifference or contempt and even hatred for Mary Immaculate. Blasphemies of those who directly insult her in her sacred statues and images. Our Lady s words to Sister Lucia: I promise at the hour of death to help with the graces needed for their salvation, whoever on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months, shall confess and receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the rosary with the intention of making reparation to me. It is a great way to start your Saturday! IT S OK TO STARE with OPEN EYES Visitation Catholic Church FILIPINO SIMBANG GABI BAKE SALE Sunday, August 19, after all Masses The Visitation Filipino Simbang Gabi Committee is having a fundraising bake sale. Please come, taste and enjoy our delicious bakeries to support our Simbang Gabi Advent Mass. Our Simbang Gabi Advent Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 7:30pm, followed by fellowship dinner. To those who have never sat before the Lord with Open Eyes, Eucharistic Adoration can seem like a waste of time. And yet to those who have tasted the goodness of the Lord, Adoration has the power to move us closer to Jesus. Think about Jesus encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. At the very beginning of their conversation, Jesus told her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, Give me a drink. You would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water (John 4:10). In a similar manner, Eucharistic Adoration is not about our giving Jesus a drink by giving up our time to be with Him as much as it is about our coming to Jesus and asking Him for a drink. It s about presenting our needs to the Lord and asking Him to fill us up with heavenly grace and heavenly power and heavenly wisdom. It s about receiving all that we need to live in Him and for Him in this world. The more we fix our eyes on Jesus, the more we will appreciate how much He goes out of His way to reach us. When we come to meet Him in Adoration, He shows us just as He showed the Samaritan woman that He wants to be our Lord, our Savior and our friend. As our eves are opened, we will take His advice and ask Him for a drink of His living water. And we will never be the same again. ( from The Word Among us) It s OK to stare! Our Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To become a registered adorer, contact Joan or Mary There is a need for an adorer to adore the Fourth Saturday of every month at 8 pm.
