April 29, 2018 Page Three NEWS FROM THE P.I.T. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney In my recent studies of Acts of the Apostles, I m becoming more and more a St. Barnabas fan! is references in Scripture are small, but H it s because of his life we have tremendous transformation of the Church. St. Barnabas is first described in the scriptures as a man putting everything at the feet of the apostles. This was a sign of offering his life to the service of the Church. It is also at that time, he is given a name Son of Encouragement. We hear of St. Barnabas next in the scriptures in the passage from our First Reading this weekend! aul had recently encountered the Lord on his S way to Damascus. But after martyring St. Stephen and other Christians, no one, even the apostles, wanted to interact with Saul. St. Barnabas, a simple man, simply reached out to Saul and would later introduce him to the Apostles! n a later story, St. Barnabas would bring Saul to I Antioch to reach out to the community where the early Church would receive the name as Christians. It was because of simple interactions and invitations, St. Paul would be introduced to the Church! ould you imagine where the Church would be C without St. Barnabas there would be no St. Paul? Sometimes we get overwhelmed thinking that we could never be like the great missionaries or Saints of the Church? Yet, St. Barnabas shows a way of life that can actually bring about great changes! It s through his willingness to offer our lives to the Church, encouragement, and invitation to others to a life in Christ, that has the ability to change the world! If you are worried that you can t live like St. Paul, how about we try to live a life like St. Barnabas and bring others into the faith that will transform the life of the Church! 2018 Catholic Ministries ANNUAL APPEAL Goal: $136, Amount Pledged: $122, Amount Paid: $104, Donor Count: 241 Thank you to all who have responded to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. We are most grateful for your generosity and will keep you in our prayers.

4 Page Four April 29, 2018 Scripture Reflections for FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER LIVING the WORD April 29, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: REMAINERS For followers of Christ, to remain does not mean merely staying in place, but keeping an active, living, and close connection with him at all times. FIRST READING Barnabas reported to the apostles how Saul had seen the Lord on the way (Acts 9:26-31). God had called Paul. The reactions of the Christian community in Jerusalem is consistent with what one would expect. They were afraid and thought Paul s conversion might be a ruse. However, Barnabas served as an intermediary, and Paul was received by them with great joy. He boldly proclaimed the good news until opposition developed. He was then sent on to Tarsus; opposition could not hinder the growth of the Church, for the Holy Spirit was guiding it. SECOND READING This is God's commandment: that we may believe and love (1 John 3:18-24). As Christians we are encouraged to practice our faith in action and not just speak about it. We should trust God s goodness, for God is greater than we are. We should place our hearts in God and make him our center of all that we are. How can we know that God is the center? We must believe in Jesus as the only-begotten Son of God, and we have to keep the commandments. This means that we have to recognize that our faith has both a vertical and a horizontal dimension. We must love both God and our brothers and sisters. Visitation Catholic Church GOSPEL I am the true vine; whoever remains in me will bear much fruit (John 15:1-8). We must establish an intimate relationship with God and abide in him. When we do this, we find the true meaning of our lives. When we try to exist outside of that relationship, we find only frustration and loneliness. Jesus is the way to the Father. He is the way and the truth and the life. That is why Jesus uses the allegory of his being the vine and we being the branches. He is the source of our vitality (just as vines give life to the branches on the vine). In him we will bear fruit, but apart from him we cannot hope to flourish. This Gospel speaks extensively of the relationship that the Sacrament of the Eucharist establishes. REFLECTION The word remain fills these readings: remain on the vine, in Jesus, and allow his words to remain in us. One meaning of remain is by staying in the same place or with the same person or group. We stay on the vine by staying with Jesus and those who belong to him. In that way, we invite his words to stay within us. In understanding the word, we learned that to remain entails an intimate, reciprocal, and enduring relationship with Jesus. Our relationship with him will bear the fruit of living his commandments, so others can see that we remain in him and he remains in us. Saul, the persecutor, had an encounter in which Jesus invited Saul to stay with him and Jesus to remain in Saul. It wasn t until they saw change in Saul that the early Church moved from fearing him to trusting him. Barnabas was the witness who invited them to open their eyes. Saul s words and actions bore the fruit of his and Jesus new relationship. For Jesus words to remain in us we need to make time to read, listen to, and reflect on them. Let them prune away whatever does not reflect Jesus way. When Jesus remains in us and we remain in him our words and deeds bear his fruit. St. Francis de Sales taught that it s not enough to carry the Lord on our tongue, speaking God s praises, or in our hearts, sharing our love and affection for God. We must carry the Lord in our arms by good works. Without those works, the other two ways of carrying the Lord do not amount to much. Remain in Christ today. Stay with him. Show that his words remain in you. Carry him in your arms by your good works. Visitation Catholic Church We would like to extend a warm invitation to all parishioners to join us once a month FIVE FIRST SATURDAYS DEVOTION in honor of Mary s Immaculate Heart Devotion begins with 8:15 am Saturday Mass followed by approx. 45 min. of prayer, reflection, and meditation. Why five Saturdays? The number five is significant because Jesus told Sister Lucia (a Fatima seer) that there are five kinds of offenses and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary: 1. Blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception. 2. Blasphemies against her Virginity. 3. Blasphemies against her Divine Maternity. 4. Blasphemies of those who openly seek to foster in the hearts of children, indifference or contempt and even hatred for Mary Immaculate. 5. Blasphemies of those who directly insult her in her sacred statues and images. Our Lady s words to Sister Lucia: I promise at the hour of death to help with the graces needed for their salvation, whoever on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months, shall confess and receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the rosary with the intention of making reparation to me. The next First Saturday falls on May 5 this is a great way to start your Saturday! The Rosary Devotion is prayed every day... Monday through Saturday after the 8:15 am Mass in the church Prayers for the Ordained are offered... Every Monday at 7 pm. Every Thursday after 8:15 am Mass Prayers for Priests and St. Peregrine Relic Are offered monthly...
