3 PARISH BUSINESS New from the P.I.T. - Priest in Training I can just always eat! I could have a sizeable meal and I find myself grabbing for a snack within an hour. So you can imagine how challenging it would be for me to fast for forty days and forty nights like our Lord? It would seem almost impossible! But the question needs to be asked, how could the Lord fast for forty days and forty nights? Let s take a closer look at the Gospel passage: He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. (Matthew 4:2) Wait??? The Lord wasn t hungry during the 40 days and 40 nights of fasting? Just afterwards?!? Why and how should be our next question? And the answer is simple; it is Love! Jesus is being led out into the desert by the Holy Spirit. Jesus, throughout the Scriptures, would go to a deserted place to be with his Heavenly Father in prayer. The 40 days and 40 nights were not a time when Jesus was alone, but a time of communion; a time for deep intimate relationship. Who wouldn t miss out on a meal(s), if it meant being in a deep conversation with the person they love? The Lord s fasting in the desert wasn t a great challenge because his sacrifice was founded on love! So the challenge for us on this first Sunday of Lent is to ask the question; are my Lenten sacrifices built on the foundation of love? If not, then I would re-consider your Lenten sacrifices. For our sacrifices for the Lord should be founded on our love for the Lord, not on ourselves. Any true love engenders sacrifice, but any sacrifice does not engender love. God is not sacrifice. God is love. And because He is love, He has become a joyful sacrifice ~ Fr. Louis Evely Fr. Michael Kearney +THE LENTEN JOURNEY Visitation Church Weekday Masses One of the best ways to enter into the Lenten Season is to participate in daily Mass. Weekday Mass is celebrated at 6:15 and 8:15.. Monday Friday, and at 8:15 on Saturday. If you are unable to attend daily Mass, take some time to reflect on the readings which are listed in the bulletin each week. Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross will be prayed on all Fridays of Lent at 7:00.. followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Eucharistic Adoration The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for quiet prayer and meditation. Operation Rice Bowl In the spirit of Lenten almsgiving, rice bowls are available at the entrances to the church. By donating the proceeds from our Lenten acts of self-denial, we follow the Lord s command to care for the less fortunate. The Sacrament of Reconciliation Lent is the primary season of reconciliation in the Church year and everyone is encouraged to receive this Sacrament during this time. This Sacrament is celebrated each Saturday form 4:00 4:45.. Lenten Regulations Fasting: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. This binds all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. On days of fast, one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, although liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Abstinence: Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence for those over the age of 14. On these days, no meat is allowed. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. Lenten Meal Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, may our Lenten fasting turn us toward all our brothers and sisters who are in need. Bless this table, our food and ourselves. Send us through Lent with good cheer, and bring us quickly to your Passover. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Page 3

5 FAITH FORMATION Faith Matt-ers By Matt Pozen Director of Parish Faith Formation Saint of the Week --- Frances of Rome This week s saint of the week is Saint Frances of Rome, whose feast is celebrated on March 9 every year. She was born in the year 1384 into a wealthy noble family in the city of Rome. This was at a tumultuous time known as the Great Western Schism ( ), when there were two rival popes claiming to be the legitimate successor of Saint Peter. Frances inherited a deep piety and devotion from her mother, and a strong will from her father. By the age of eleven she decided that God s will for her life was to be a nun, but her father s will was that she marry another wealthy Roman nobleman. Frances did not want to do this, and she cried to her spiritual director about it. He counseled her wisely: Are you crying because you want to do God s will, or because you want God to do your will? So she reluctantly gave in to the marriage. Her husband, Lorenzo Ponziani, was a good person and really cared for Frances, but soon her nightmare began. This shy and devout young girl was thrust into the busy social life of Roman high society. Her mother-in-law, Cecilia, loved to entertain, and she expected Frances to do the same. Frances much preferred a quiet life of prayer, fasting, and penance. The mental and emotional strain of her situation took its toll, and she collapsed under the pressure. For months she lay close to death, unable to eat or speak or move. Finally, she had a vision of Saint Alexis, who told her that she must go on living, for God had important work for her to do. With that she slowly regained her strength. Life was still difficult for Frances. Her mother-in-law still expected her to entertain and make the social rounds. She often asked her why she couldn t be more like her sister-in-law, Vannozza, who seemed to thrive in her role. One day Vannozza found Frances crying to herself in the garden, so she offered her a listening ear. Frances poured out her heart to her sister-in-law, and amazingly it turned out that Vannozza had also desired for many years to live a life devoted to the Lord. With that, the two became close friends and spiritual companions. While still remaining faithful to their obligations as wives and mothers, Frances and Vannozza dedicated themselves to the spiritual life. They attended mass together every day, visited prisons, served in hospitals, and set up a small chapel in the family castle. Frances soon bore two sons, Battista and Giovanni, and a daughter, Agnes. When her mother-in-law died, Frances became the matriarch of the family and inherited its many duties. When a flood brought disease and famine to Rome the following year, Frances fed the victims from her family s own supplies. She sold the family jewels in order to provide aid to the poor. She even set aside her own luxurious clothing and spent the rest of her life wearing a simple dress made of coarse green cloth. At this time the Great Western Schism took a sinister turn. One of the rival popes sent the wicked Count Troja to Rome to secure the submission of Frances wealthy family. The count captured her son, Battista, and held him hostage. Frances immediately went to her chapel to pray. Miraculously, every horse upon which the count placed the child refused to move. Realizing he was fighting against God, Count Troja released young Battista back to his mother. Sadly, a plague soon swept through Rome, and claimed the life of Frances nine-year-old son, Giovanni. Tempted to give up on faith, she received a vision of Giovanni, who told her that God would send her an archangel to be her guardian for the rest of her life. Strengthened by the constant presence of her guardian angel, Frances rededicated herself to the spiritual life. She started a lay order of women attached to the Benedictines called the Oblates of Mary. They lived in the world but consecrated themselves to God and cared for the poor. Frances took care of her husband, Lorenzo, for the last years of his life, and his dying words to her were: God has given me so much in your love. Four years later, on March 9, 1440, Frances herself died, and the last words from her lips were: The angel has finished his task; he now beckons me to follow him. Perhaps today busy husbands and wives, dads and moms might look to Saint Frances of Rome for her example of living faith and holiness in the midst of the demands of family life. She reminds us all that the goal of the life of prayer is not to convince God to do our will, but to try to conform ourselves to God s will. Thursday Evening Masses in Lent 7:00.. in the Church At each Thursday evening Mass the priest s homily will unpack a different theme from the spiritual life: March 9 Theme: Prayer (Fr. Greg Skowron) March 16 Theme: The Dangers of Wealth (Fr. Dan Bachner) March 23 Theme: Our Hardened Hearts (Fr. Burke Masters) March 30 Theme: What or Whom Do We Worship? (Fr. Joseph Ekpo) April 6 Theme: Eternal Life through Jesus (Fr. Michael Kearney) All are welcome to this Lenten renewal series. Come have your faith nourished at the table of the Word and the table of the Eucharist. Page 5

MINISTRIES Behold, I Make All Things New (Revelation 21:5) In the gospels we see the Lord help countless individuals in need of health, guidance, confidence, and forgiveness of sins. These were not chance meetings. They were life-changing encounters. Our Lord continues to draw each one of us out of ourselves to see the world anew, to recognize Him, His call, and His love. To respond by accepting His love and sharing it with all we meet is to create Heaven on earth. One soul who said yes to Christ was St. Katharine Drexel, whose feast day is celebrated on March 3. As a child, she spent time every day in front of the Blessed Sacrament. From there, she carried Christ to the African-American and Native American communities. An heiress, St. Katharine generously spent over $12 million to build housing, schools, and community centers for the people God placed on her heart. Jesus, with great love and humility, resides with us sacramentally in the Adoration Chapel, to do no less than heal, guide, strengthen, and forgive us our sins, today! Truly present, Jesus is with us in the Holy Eucharist, Lo, I am with you always until the close of the age. (Mt. 28:20) Come! Encounter Christ! Draw near to Him and live abundantly the happy life He has planned for you. Yes, you! It is a lesson we all need to let alone the things that do not concern us. He has other ways for others to follow Him; all do not go by the same path. It is for each of us to learn the path by which He requires us to follow Him, and to follow Him in that path. St. Katharine Drexel Visitation Rosary Makers Ministry The Visitation Rosary Makers Ministry will be selling ladder rosaries, First Communion Rosaries, Confirmation Rosaries, rosary bracelets, and rosary car chains before and after all masses the weekend of March 4 and 5. 7 CCW Woman of the Week Kim MacGregor *How long have you been a Visitation parishioner? Since 2000 it doesn t seem like 17 years! My husband, Don, and I moved to Elmhurst in 1997 after living in Chicago for a few years after we got married. We met in college at Marquette University. Neither of us was from Elmhurst, though we both grew up in the Chicago suburbs. We first joined another parish in town, but Visitation felt like our home parishes growing up like a wonderful community. *Tell us about your family. We have three children: Colin, a sophomore at the University of Missouri (Vis Class of 2011); Sean, a junior at York (Vis Class of 2014); and Tess, in 6 th grade at Vis. And I have to mention the dog Bentley, our Havanese, is nearly three. *What do you enjoy about CCW? Fellowship isn t a word we Catholics use often, but it perfectly describes what I enjoy about CCW. The women I ve come to know through Visitation are like an anchor to me as I go out into the world constantly inspiring me and challenging me to grow in and live my faith. I especially love the Circle of Life aspect a continual cycle of young women making their mark alongside women who have been parishioners for decades. *How do you let your faith radiate into the community? What are some volunteer roles you have taken on? I feel like your faith should always be pushing you outside your comfort zone moving you closer to becoming the person God wants you to be. So, too, with volunteering it s a chance to give back but also to grow. I ve been fortunate to have some tremendous opportunities to contribute and also gain so much. I started by walking into the rectory one day offering to help with the 50 th anniversary parish album. I m a marketing copywriter and have some graphic design skills, so it was a natural starting point. Eventually I got involved with plans to build the parish center and add on to the school. Later I was on the school dinner dance committee, doing the auction ad book. Then came serving on the Visitation School Board and strategic planning task force. I ve also helped coach cross country and track. This spring, I ll succeed Jane Fitzgerald as CCW president I'm daunted and excited for that role! *Share with us your favorite bible verse. No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him. - 1 Corinthians 2:9 Ladies of the CCW Please Join Us Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica Chicago Tour and Lunch on March 16 Please join the CCW for a wonderful morning touring this historical Chicago Basilica. The auction has been a mainstay of the IC Knight of Jewels Gala. Sometimes it was Live, with an auctioneer encouraging participation from the crowd. At other times, it was Silent, bidding against your neighbor to see who would win. We've added other elements to the galas over the years paddle raises and wine pulls, heads-or-tails and casino games. To everyone who has generously committed their time and hard work in running our events in the past, we thank you! But, we believe it is time for a change. This year, instead of bidding on trips, sports tickets, or spa baskets, we are asking guests to celebrate our past, present and future knights by opening their hearts to Fund a Knight!
