3 News from the P.I.T. Priest in Training In my ministry, I encountered many Christians, most of them fallen away Catholics who wanted to distance themselves from the Catholic Church. They would make the claim that the Church was just another man-made institution. By claiming it as such, they could reject the Church, and distant themselves from the scandals and also the authority of the Church. Yet the Gospel reading from this Sunday shows something different. The Church s foundation and authority wasn t a man-made institution of St. Peter, but from Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God! Christ even makes it clear in Luke s Gospel, when he speaks directly to the Apostles, Whoever reject you rejects me. (Luke 10:16). This is a powerful statement by linking Christ, Himself to his Church and Apostles. But what about the corruption of the Church? It is true, the Church is made up of broken people. You can point throughout the history of the Church, which continues today, of corruptions and scandal involving popes, bishops, priests, nuns etc. What we need to understand is God, in His faithfulness doesn t abandon His Church, but continues to work through our brokenness. I m inspired by the French Catholic philosopher, who was a former protestant then agonistic thinker before converting to Catholicism: If you seek that which represents [the Church]... Do not consider us sinners...rather, look at how the Church dresses our wounds and leads us hobbling along to life eternal. The great glory of the Church is being holy with sinful members. ~ Jacques Maritain Why does Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, form a Church on the brokenness of St. Peter? Maybe because God wanted to reveal that His Church was not for the perfect and the righteous. Maybe God wanted to give us hope, for the broken and the sinner. If this is true, then let us not be discouraged by the sinfulness of the members of the Church, including her leaders, but be grateful for a Merciful and loving God, who is always faithful and reaching out to us even in our sinfulness! Fr. Michael Kearney Urgent Call Visitation Church is hosting a blood drive that is open to the entire community today from 7:30.. 1:30.. in the hospitality room. LifeSource has issued an urgent call for donors due to critically low blood supplies in the Chicago area and across the country. Decreased collections leading up to and following the Labor Day weekend, contributes to dangerously low blood inventories for emergency and ongoing patient needs. PARISH BUSINESS Page 3 Join Our New Welcome Committee We are looking for volunteers for a new Welcome Committee. We welcome you to participate in The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. We are starting our program in September. If you, a family member or someone you know would like more information about our RCIA program, please call the Visitation Rectory Office at Rosary Ministry What is a Ladder Rosary? A ladder rosary is a type of rosary whose origin comes from Mexico. It is named ladder because the beads are turned sideways and linked into a chain rather than to one another, making the beads look like rungs on a ladder. The ladder has a very long history in the scriptures and tradition. Jacob sees a ladder in the Old Testament, representing the ascent to God. Jesus appropriates this imagery to himself, the Ladder between heaven and earth. St. Benedict speaks of the Ladder of Humility, by which we climb to God. St. John Climacus speaks of the Ladder of Divine Ascent, the rungs being the different virtues leading to union with God. The Marian significance was also drawn out over time. St. Dominic experienced a vision of souls climbing into Heaven on the rosary. St. Francis de Sales had a vision of two ladders to Heaven: a rather steep one directly to Jesus, and another, far less steep, towards the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the vision, St. Francis de Sales heard Jesus say, Tell your people to come to me by this ladder, by way of My Mother. The Russian word for rosary means ladder, and Michelangelo's Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel shows two souls being pulled out of purgatory by a rosary! Please join the Visitation Rosary Makers Ministry on Thursday, September 7, from 3:30 to 6:30.. For more information, contact Lorene Bryan at (815) or LorenePalgenBryan@gmail.com. Please notify if it will be your first visit so we can bring enough starting supplies. First Saturday Devotions 2017 is the one hundred year anniversary of Our Lady s apparitions at Fatima. We invite all parishioners to join in this beautiful devotion of reparation to Our Lady after the 8:15.. Mass each First Saturday of the month. In keeping with Our Lady s request at Fatima, a rosary of reparation will be recited in honor of her Immaculate Heart as we meditate on the mysteries of the rosary. Our devotion takes about 45 minutes. The next First Saturday falls on September 2. Page 6
