What is clear in the Scripture and in life: sacrifice is a necessity for relationship and life. HRIST USES A SIMPLE TRUTH FOUND IN NATURE: C Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit! John 12:24 How does that translate to our own experience? Hopefully we see it in our everyday life. It is only in daily sacrifices that we can find ourselves growing in relationship with one another! From our spouse, to our children, family and friends sacrifice is involved. What happens to those relationships when sacrifices stop? Well it seems that the relationship begins to break down if not stop altogether! UR FAITH IS NO DIFFERENT! If we desire to grow O in our relationship with the Lord, the simple question we can ask ourselves is what kind of sacrifices are we willing to make so that the relationship with God may grow? Though sacrifices may seem difficult, the relationship with the Lord is not one sided. The Lord out of His love for us laid down His life for us on the cross! He made this sacrifice so that anyone and everyone could receive a deep relationship with the Lord! Let us once again be inspired by the Lord to make the necessary sacrifices to have a growing relationship with the Lord! MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2019 The Mass Book for 2019 will be open the Tuesday after Easter. Please remember to call or come in to the parish office at , on April 3 (the Tuesday after Easter), if you wish to have a Mass in The maximum number of Mass Intentions requested by one person is 10 intentions per year.

4 Page Four March 18, 2018 Scripture Reflections for FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT LIVING the WORD March 18, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: SUFFERING, SAVED As we stand at the threshold of Holy Week, which begins in one week, we hear once again that life will have times of trial, but in Christ we are assured that the trial is not our final future. FIRST READING I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts (Jeremiah 31:31-34). The Lord created a new covenant with the people of Israel that would be more profound and internalized than the old covenant, which had been written upon tablets of stone. This covenant would be placed upon their very hearts. Remember, the heart in the Bible does not symbolize the center of one s affections but rather the source of one s intellect (so the covenant written on their hearts means that they would be filled with knowledge of the ways of the Lord). They would not need anyone to teach them about these things for God s ways would be as natural to them as breathing. SECOND READING Christ became the source of eternal salvation (Hebrews 5:7-9). Jesus implored the Father for his assistance, and the Father raised him from the dead. The trust and obedience that Jesus displayed made him perfect. The word perfect is really a play on words, for this was the word used for the act by which a man in Old Testament times became a priest. Thus, Jesus became our high priest and advocate before the Father. He is both the priest who offers the victim and the victim being offered through which we obtain forgiveness of our sins. GOSPEL If a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces much fruit (John 12:20-33). Visitation Catholic Church One of the words that is repeated in this passage is glory. Normally this word is understood as being a synonym for power or magnificence. If that were how the word was being used in this Gospel, then one would expect the hour of Jesus glory to be the Transfiguration or the Resurrection. Instead, the hour of glory is the cross, for the word has been redefined in this Gospel. Here it means an outpouring of love. Jesus most manifests the love of God for us when he is dying on the cross, for the cross is the Sacrament (visible sign of the invisible reality) of God s love for us. The voice that comes from heaven is said to sound like thunder. This is a bit of wordplay, for the Hebrew word for thunder is qol, which could be translated as thunder or the voice of God. Jesus is about to be lifted up (on the cross). This was the moment of judgment, for one had to choose between life (which is found in Jesus) and death (the realm of Satan, ruler of this world). REFLECTION These readings paint God as intimately connected to us. God forgives our evildoing and remembers our sin no more, as close as our heart. God becomes human in Christ, who knew human suffering and who draws everyone to himself on the cross. He learned obedience through suffering. To obey means to listen. Christ listened to human experience from the inside out, and had new ears with which to hear God s voice. One with Christ, we are to listen to his voice and live as he lived and love as he loved. Then people see Jesus and the One who sent him in us. Listening to Jesus means we will earn obedience through suffering, too. A sexual abuse survivor shared how she held onto that hurt and pain for many years. Her spiritual director helped her release it by asking God to help her forgive her abuser. Understandably reluctant at first, she did, and began to experience a freedom and lightness of heart she thought she d lost forever. Holding on to pain and hurt robs us of energy, often doing more harm to us than to the person who harmed us. Finding the courage to confront her abuser, she regained a voice that she had lost years earlier. She learned obedience through suffering. By listening to her heart and to God s voice therein, her heart and steadfast spirit were renewed. We each journey through suffering to healing in our own way. However, each person s suffering can offer the healing we need. When we experience intimacy with God who forgives and remembers our sin no more, the journey to healing and wholeness begins. It often takes calling out in prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears, but when we do, God s presence within our hearts frees us to find healing we thought unimaginable. 6 Page Six March 18, 2018 St. Joseph, Protector of the Body and Blood of Christ March 19th is the Solemnity (Feast Day) of St. Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary... HE IS THE PATRON OF THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH, unborn children, families, fathers, workers, travelers, immigrants, and a happy death. Saint Joseph was the foster father of Jesus. He worked hard to provide for his family as a carpenter in Nazareth. He was a very humble and compassionate man who at times, in our world today, does not seem to receive the attention and gratitude that he strongly deserves. Recently, St. Joseph was recognized in a very exceptional way. On May 1, 2013, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments initially led by Pope Benedict XVI. and now confirmed by Pope Francis through a decree, declared that the name of Saint Joseph be inserted into Eucharistic Prayers II, III, and IV. Saint Joseph s name was already inserted into the first Eucharistic Prayer (the Roman Canon) on November 13, 1962 by Pope John XXIII. We know that the Blessed Virgin Mary was the Mother of God. Her Womb was the first Tabernacle of the Lord. So you might then wonder, How does St. Joseph fit into all of this? Saint Joseph earned the title as one of the patron saints of the unborn because he upheld the life of Jesus and protected Jesus from the very beginning while Jesus was in Mary s womb. Joseph also protected Jesus and Mary during Joseph s life time. He protected the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus so that today, we can have the ultimate experience of receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Some time this week, visit the Adoration Chapel, and while you are praying to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, thank St. Joseph for all that he has done for Jesus and Mary. Also, pray for the well-being of your family and that they too, like St. Joseph, will be protectors of the Body and Blood of Christ. Please call Mary Lewis at or Joan Taylor at to inquire about your special hour adoring and protecting Jesus in the Eucharist! Visitation Catholic Church STATIONS OF THE CROSS FOR SENIORS Wednesdays, March 21 and March 28, at 1:30pm Visitation will offer Stations of the Cross for Seniors.
