3 News from the P.I.T Priest in Training Growing up, I had a best friend who was into extreme sports: BMX bikes, rollerblading, and skateboarding. And of course, because he was my best friend, I too had similar interests; except for skateboarding. Too many times I saw my friend go one way, while the board went the other. But alas, I cracked under peer pressure when he asked me to try it. It was level ground, nothing tricky. But my fear became a reality, the board went one way while I went the other with the back of my head hitting the concrete ground. It was the last time I stepped onto a skateboard. It was also when I discovered the simple fact: that separation can hurt; especially if you are being separated from something you should really remain connected too! I bring this because painful separations are involved in our readings this weekend. The first reading, which is quoted in our Gospel as well, is talking about two of the twelve tribes of Israel: Zebulun and Naphtali. They were the two furthest northern tribes of Israel and they were also the first two tribes to fall away from Israel. In total, 10 out of the 12 would eventually fall from their faith and covenant with God. You can imagine the terrible pain that occurred from the separation which involved war, but also the pain of a spiritual separation from God. Division and separation wasn t something that just happened in the Old Testament either; it continued even into the New Testament. St. Paul warns the community of Corinth not to be divided by leadership, but to be united by the Cross of Christ! Here is a community that just accepted the great news of Jesus Christ and it didn t take long for them to seek division and separation. The thing is, if we are truly honest with ourselves, we can see that the readings are speaking directly to us today! We are being challenged to seek unity and healing in a world, nation, city, family, and even within our own hearts, filled with division and hate. This can t be done by us, but only by the Love and the Cross of Christ. Fr. Michael Kearney Attention All Volunteers Protecting God s Children Workshop It is Diocesan policy that all individuals who interact with children in any capacity within our church and school attend a Protecting God s Children workshop. We are having a workshop here at Visitation on Tuesday, January 24, at 6:30.. in the Hospitality Room. You need to register for the workshop online by going to: dioceseofjoliet.org. You will find at the bottom of the page an icon that says Promise to Protect Pledge to Heal. Click on that. On the lefthand side of the page you will see Virtus Protecting God s Children. Once you click on that, you will be taken to a page that allows you to see the workshop schedule, please follow the directions at the top of the page to register for the workshop. Once the workshop is started, latecomers will not be admitted and will be asked to reschedule. If you have any questions, please contact me at the Religious Education Office ext Matt Pozen PARISH BUSINESS Page 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, For over 50 years, the Collection for the Church in Latin America has been a sign of the solidarity of the Church in the United States with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. For people living in these regions, barriers to practicing the faith include lack of resources, shortages of pastoral agents, and poor infrastructures that make relatively simple things like participating in weekly Mass difficult. Your support of the collection helps to share the faith with those who long to experience God s mercy within strong faith communities. Additionally, a portion of this collection goes to the mission work of our own diocese in Bolivia, assisting the needs of the poorest of the poor in this Andean nation. In a letter to Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz and the entire Catholic community in the United States, Pope Francis commended the work of the collection, saying, Through your support, many lives have been touched by the Good News of Christ s merciful love, especially for the poor. The Diocese of Joliet takes up this collection the weekend of January 21-22, Please be generous in this collection, and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God bless you. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet The 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal is Underway! It begins with a mailing that many of our parishioners have received or will soon receive. This is a mailing from Bishop Conlon asking for a pledge to the 2017 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. The Appeal not only funds many of the operations of the Diocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Held in God s Hands. What a wonderful thought! When we accept that God knows what we need and will provide for our tomorrows, we are able to be good stewards of the gifts He has entrusted to us. One way that we can be good stewards, is by giving back to God the gifts He shared with us. We can support our parish, our diocese and the Church throughout the world with gifts of time, talent and treasure. The gifts we give enable ministries, education, and services that touch thousands of lives. Our parish goal is $124, With your financial support, we can exceed this goal. When we exceed our goal in paid pledges, we will receive 70% of the amount over goal for use in our parish. Please answer Bishop Conlon s request and make a

7 MINISTRIES Out of the Mouths of Babes I teach 5 th through 8 th grade science in a Catholic school. I feel very blessed that I can demonstrate and explain to my students that science and religion can coexist. One example of this is that every week, for forty weeks, the students and I talk about the development of a baby from conception to birth. The students are amazed by seeing the baby that God has created grow and develop week after week. What makes these lessons very vital and meaningful is that each student spiritually adopts a baby in this world that is in danger of abortion. As a class we pray for those babies, their parents, and their relatives to have a change of heart. During one weekly discussion, one 5 th grade student said, I am going to go home tonight and give my mother a big hug and kiss for having me. Another student said, Any one that thinks about having an abortion really does not know how it will actually feel to hold his/her baby and receive love from his/ her baby. If they did, they would never have an abortion. Another student remarked that their grandmother had 12 children and times were tough, but each of her children was a gift from God. What is so awesome is that these young ten -year-old children were on the same wavelength as one of our most recent canonized saints. The children s discussion was reminiscent of what St. Teresa of Calcutta said during her speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC in She said, But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because Jesus said, If you receive a little child, you receive me So every abortion is the denial of receiving Jesus, is the neglect of receiving Jesus By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her own problems. What these wise children said also reminded me of the Bible passage: When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wondrous things he was doing, and the children crying out in the temple area, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were indignant and said to him, Do you hear what they are saying? Jesus said to them, Yes; and have you never read the text, Out of the mouths of infants and nurslings you have brought forth praise? And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany, and there he spent the night. (Matthew 21:15-17). Sunday, January 22, marks the 44 th anniversary that abortion was made legal in the United States of America. Monday, January 23 rd is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. I know on this day my students and I will be praying for all of the unborn babies in this world and their parents. I also will be going to the Adoration Chapel to pray for them. Would you take a few minutes out of your week to pray for the unborn and for the end to abortion? Our children can t be fooled by politicians, the law, or others. They know that life is one of God s greatest gifts to us and we should respect it from conception to a natural death. Your prayers before your Creator in the Blessed Sacrament can make a difference. Make a visit to the Adoration Chapel today and pray for the unborn. The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Your Creator is awaiting your visit!
