PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney In God himself the One does not exclude the Other, it includes it. The Unity of God is so complete, so rich, that it is not solitude enclosed in itself, but rather the fullness of communion. And thereby, the source of all communion. Oliver Clement (pg 58) hen we grow closer to God, when we W enter in a great intimacy with the Lord, the result should not lead to seclusion, but should lead us out to others. Why? Because God, who is a communion of persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; out of communion creates out of an abundance of love. God is always moving outwards! So if we are to become in communion with God, to be one with God. We will also act as God acts. hat which draws us outward for the sake of the T world and others. It is the foundation of the two greatest commandments heard in the Gospel today. To Love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength; followed by love of neighbor. If this is foundational to our faith, we can evaluate our relationship and love for God, on the basis of how we are treating our neighbor. If we struggle to love others as Christ loves them, we need to once again commit ourselves to the Love of Christ, which draws us out to love others. ay our hearts be transformed by the M Eucharist this day, to be sent into the world to bring the love of God to our neighbor.

4 Page Four November 4, 2018 Scripture Reflections for THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD November 4, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: HOW DO I LOVE THEE? We only need to love God in two ways but in most broad and deep ways! We must love God completely, and love our neighbor as we love our very selves. FIRST READING The LORD, the God of your fathers, will give you a land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 6:2-6). This reading gives the Old Testament citation of the first great law. This passage was prayed each day by devout Jews, for it is the Shema Israel (a Hebrew title that means Hear, O Israel. ) The rabbis said that to love the LORD with all one s heart meant to love the Lord with one s intellect (remember that in the Bible one thinks with one s heart). To love the Lord with one s soul meant to love the LORD even to the moment that they separate soul from body during the persecution. To love the Lord with one s strength meant to love the Lord with all of one s material possessions. SECOND READING Jesus is always able to save those who approach God through him (Hebrews 7:23-28). This reading contrasts the priesthood of Jesus to that of the priests of the Old Testament. Those priests did not live forever. There were many of them, one after another. Jesus, on the other hand, lives forever. This letter was influenced by Greek philosophy. In Platonic philosophy, the one is better than the many. The one perfectly expresses the idea being communicated, but the many are many because each one of them fails to fully communicate what is intended. Thus, Jesus is the perfect High Priest while the priests of the Old Testament always fell short they were sinners. When they sacrificed they Visitation Catholic Church had to do so for themselves and for the people. Jesus, being sinless, could offer sacrifices for us alone (for he did not need them for himself). GOSPEL To love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:28b-34). All throughout the Gospel, the Pharisees and scribes had been trying to trap Jesus in order to have charges that they might bring against him. We can assume that this was what the scribe was trying to do when he approached Jesus with the question of which was the greatest commandments. Jesus gives the scribe the simple answer that to love God and love neighbor are the two greatest commandments. What seems to have begun as a test ends in a form of mutual admiration, for the scribe acknowledges the honesty and integrity of the scribe s acknowledgement. The scribe and Pharisees were a bit nonplussed by this response, for there was a simple wisdom to it and they did not ask other questions. This interchange could give us a sense of how to respond to those who are trying to play games with us. He answers their questions with simple honesty, and they are disarmed. REFLECTION The poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning asked: How do I love thee? Jesus answers a similar question with the Shema, Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart soul strength. Then he adds: You shall love your neighbor in concrete ways. Who is my neighbor? Throughout the Gospels, Jesus includes one s enemy, someone foreign to me, those different from me, those I envy, covet, take for granted, or might abuse. How do I love you, God? By loving all God s people, that is, everyone, for God is Creator of all. Love can be simple, like making a phone call, sending a card, writing an , or making a visit. Love can take a lot of work, like being the first to say, I m sorry, working to reconcile with someone who has hurt us, welcoming an immigrant into our neighborhood, or standing up when another human being is publicly ridiculed or discriminated against. We know that when we have not loved our neighbor, we can feel regret or shame for what we have done and what we have failed to do. Moses tells us to hear and observe God s statues and commandments in order to grow, prosper, and become the people God calls us to be. How do you love God? By loving all your people, in word and deed. 6 Page Six November 4, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church DISASTER RELIEF COLLECTION A LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Once again, we are faced with a season of terrible devastation wrought by storms around our country. Specifically, Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael are two major storms so far this year which have caused millions of dollars worth of damage to those living in the southeastern states. Many have lost homes, businesses or places of worship as a result of the storm winds, debris, torrential rain and catastrophic flooding. We offer our prayers to families who have lost loved ones or are among those injured. As so often occurs, the poorest communities are hit hardest by these conditions, and will have the least recourse to address their losses. As a result, the bishops of the United States have agreed to take up a special collection for the humanitarian, long-term recovery and Church needs arising from the storms and other natural disasters in The funds collected in this special appeal for the 2018 Disasters will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA and Catholic Relief Services, the official relief agencies of the U.S. Catholic Church at home and abroad. These funds will allow their local agencies to respond to immediate emergency needs for food, water, shelter and medical care in these communities, and aid in long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts. Specifically, these contributions will be focused in response to Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Michael and other disasters during this year. I thank you all for your cooperation and prayers, Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet Please note there will be one collection for donations during Mass. Second collection donations can be put in the same basket as your Sunday offering.

7 Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time BEGINS THIS SUNDAY, NOV. 4, AT 10 AM MASS! Visitation is starting a Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) Program during 10 am Sunday Mass. This is for children ages Four through Fourth grade At the start of Mass (after Opening Prayer), the priest will invite children forward to give them a blessing. An adult leader and teen helper will lead them from church to the Parish Center Fireside Room. (Parents may go with their child(ren) the first few times if apprehensive.) The leader proclaims Scripture readings from the Mass (in a kid-friendly translation) and discuss its meaning (using a leader s guide). A song or brief activity may be incorporated to enhance the experience. The session ends with a simplified Profession of Faith (Creed) and petitions, with the children being encouraged to voice their own. Adult and teen leaders will walk the children back into church as the collection is being taken, and make sure children return to sitting with their parents. In addition to providing children with an experience of the Liturgy of the Word that is more at their own level, CLOW also helps parents to hear the Scripture readings and homily in a deeper way, since they won t be distracted by their younger children fidgeting in the pews. If you or your teenager would like to lead Children s Liturgy Of the Word (CLOW) Please contact Matt Pozen in the RE Office at matt.pozen@visitationcc.org or x 502. Matt will provide training, leader s guide, as well as ongoing support. With enough volunteers, leaders can be rotated weekly. Come join this fun and fulfilling ministry! During the week of November 4 th through 10 th, National Vocation Awareness Week, make a visit to the Adoration Chapel to ask God what He is calling you to do. Also, say some prayers for all of those considering religious vocations so that they will have the strength and fortitude to carry on God s Will for them. Our world is in desperate need of holy men and holy women to be the Hands and Feet of Christ. Our diligent prayers in front of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament can make this happen. Do not delay; go to the Adoration Chapel for this powerful prayer. The Adoration Chapel is opened 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Please call Mary Lewis, at , or Joan Taylor, at , for more information or to set up your special hour with Jesus.

It must always be opposed. This guide is not an endorsement and may not be used to advance the candidacy of any individual. Go to Please read the directions carefully. You must know your own districts. You can find your districts at by clicking on Find Your Legislator and entering your zip code. This is an important election and we have a civic responsibility to cast our precious vote.
