3 News from the P.I.T. Priest in Training This weekend we celebrate the Lord s Ascension into heaven. As shared in the first reading from Acts of the Apostles, the Apostles saw Jesus taken up into heaven, only to have angels encourage the Apostles to go out into the world! This story has tremendous meaning within the context Salvation History. The Apostles were Jews, who were familiar with the Story of prophets Elijah and Elisha in the Old Testament. In that story, Elisha, a disciple of Elijah, asks Elijah before he leaves for double portion of his spirit. Elijah s response, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you (2 Kings 2:10). Elisha sees Elijah taken up into heaven and receives double portion of the spirit and does even greater miracles than Elijah! Jesus is taken into heaven and the Apostles see it! Guess what that means! Not only will they receive the Holy Spirit, which we will celebrate at Pentecost next weekend, but the Apostles will do even greater things than the Lord with the Holy Spirit! Sounds crazy, possibly heretical I know, but even Jesus says in the Gospel of John, Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do (John 14:12). What can we learn from this weekend as we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord? The Lord desires for the Holy Spirit to be multiplied on the earth. The Lord wants us to live completely in and through him by the Holy Spirit. We just need to remove those obstacles and sin that prevent us from receiving the Holy Spirit. So our challenge this week as we prepare to celebrate Pentecost Sunday, let us look at our lives and ask what are those things in my life that are preventing me from receiving the Holy Spirit? Then we should act and prepare our hearts! (There is a great resource on the Holy Spirit found on parish code 2JPJJ7 Click on Study under Discover the Catholic Faith section The Title The Wild Goose: Discovering a Deeper Relationship with the Holy Spirit ) Fr. Michael Kearney PARISH BUSINESS A Request for Pentecost The sacred Easter season of fifty days officially comes to an end on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Pentecost is the day that commemorates the giving of the Holy Spirit to the apostles and disciples, the beginnings of the Church and its mission to every tongue, people, and nation. The earliest followers of Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit and encouraged by His grace, were fired up to spread the gospel to all nations as they themselves lived and proclaimed the Gospel. The Eastern DuPage Deanery wishes all 17 parishes to recognize the celebration of Pentecost and for parishioners to bring a friend and to wear red, the color of Pentecost. Going forward, we encourage everyone to bring the Good News of Jesus into every human situation to strengthen relationships with Jesus and to lead others to conversion. MINISTRIES First Saturday Devotions 2017 is the one hundred year anniversary of Our Lady s apparitions at Fatima. We invite all parishioners to join in this beautiful devotion of reparation to Our Lady after the 8:15 Mass each First Saturday of the month. In keeping with Our Lady s request at Fatima, a rosary of reparation will be recited in honor of her Immaculate Heart as we meditate on the mysteries of the rosary. Our devotion takes about 45 minutes. The next First Saturday falls on June 3. Page 5 Rosary Devotion The Rosary is prayed every day, Monday through Saturday, after the 8:15.. Mass in Church. Please join us.

6 The Chorus of Excuses I Know I have talent and love music but I HAVE A PROBLEM JOINING VISITATION CHOIR BECAUSE 1. I can t read music 2. I don t have any Choir experience 3. I can t make a commitment for the whole year 4. I am hurting because I don t agree/like/understand the Church s position on. I m not sure I want to get involved. 5. Only people that are mostly old/young/women/men are in Choir and it s not a place I would feel comfortable. 6. I don t think I would look good in a Choir Robe. 7. I don t like the style of music. 8. I have allergies 9. It s already May and Choir is almost over for the year. 10. I don t know anyone in Choir. If you know Barb, you know she will try to answer all your questions and meet you where you are. Maybe in your audition and interview it will be that Choir isn t right for you at this time. But on the other hand, maybe you are so gifted that there will be something you can do right away and during the summer! Whatever your personal situation, Barb will make you glad you called. Call or b.masters@visitationparish.org right away before you let the opportunity for service to your Parish as well as personal physical, mental and spiritual growth pass you by. It may be too late to join for this year but Choir will be starting again in September and we want to plan to include you! Let us put you on our radar! Save the Date Father s Day Corpus Christi June 18 Attend noon Mass as a family. Walk with Jesus in the Eucharistic Procession. Say hello to Bishop Siegel. Enjoy some light refreshments. What a wonderful and special Father s Day. Memories to last forever. This weeks Featured CD Who Am I to Judge? Responding to Relativism with Logic and Love Discussing moral issues with family and friends can be a challenge in a culture that strongly promotes the idea that there is no objective truth. Speaking from a wealth of personal experience, renowned author and theologian Dr. Edward Sri provides 5 keys to enable Christians to oppose with logic and love what Pope Benedict XVI called the dictatorship of relativism. He also clarifies the proper understanding of what if means to judge, and the importance of making good judgments. VISITATION PARISH GROUPS Jane Fitzgerald Visitation s Woman of the Year Outgoing CCW President Jane Fitzgerald was recently honored as Visitation Church s Woman of the Year. She was recognized on April 29 during the 39 th Annual Woman of the Year Mass and Luncheon at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. Most Reverend Joseph M. Siegel, Auxiliary Bishop of Joliet, presided along with Reverend John Sebahar, Spiritual Advisor for the Joliet Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. Each year, one woman per parish is chosen by her parish to be their Woman of the Year. We thank Jane for her unselfish dedication to our parish as president of the CCW the past year. It was a significant commitment by both her and her family, and she truly spread both joy and kindness in the process. Congratulations, Jane!

7 The Time Before You Die The Catholic Reading Club generally selects a novel for the month of June. This June s selection, The Time Before You Die, is a novel which also contributes to the Reading Club s objective of reading books which assist in better understanding of the causes, events and aftermath of the Protestant Revolt which began 500 years ago. The background to this story is Henry III s dissolution of the 900 religious houses in England in the late 1530s. The purpose of this cruel plunder of the Church was the selling off of these properties, increasing substantially Henry s financial hoard The upheaval in English life is hard to imagine since more than 12,000 persons were ordered out of their house. The major fictional character in this story is the Robert Fletcher, a monk expelled from Mount Grace Abby (not fictional) outside of the great medieval city of York. Another major character in this story is Cardinal Pole, a Tudor cousin, resident in Rome. How Cardinal Pole dealt with this challenge, is important to this story. His integrity and fidelity to the Church makes him one of the heroes of those sad times. All are welcome to join the Catholic Book Club in reviewing this book on Thursday, June 15, 9:30.. to noon in the Parish Center, Hospitality Room. If you are interested in a study guide for the discussion or have any questions about the book or the book club generally, please contact Pauline Scharres at or pmscharres@att.net. There are acres where flags flutter in the breeze. There are plots of land studded with the rows of stone upon stone carved with the names of the fallen and the rank they wore on the uniform that was theirs. Even as the numbers of those who have served in one war fade away, they are replenished by those who have served in a new one. Those who survive take the place of those who have gone, and remember the service rendered by the dead. The graves are hallowed by the blood of heroes, and decorated by the survivors of wars now ended. We gather in remembrance, knowing that the service we give to fallen heroes is memorial to their love of freedom and ultimate sacrifice for us.
