PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney It s time for a change! At least, that s what is being revealed in the Scriptures this weekend... N THE FIRST READING, God s gives the Israelite I people the Ten Commandments. The reason for the Ten Commandments is because the people of God had already broken all Ten Commandments. You would think that after such a direct and strong command from the Lord, the people of God would stay on the straight and narrow path. But alas, they continued to wander away from God s will. That is confirmed in the Gospel when Jesus drove out the animals and corrected the people from their making the Temple a market place to a place to encounter God. s we have the time to reflect on our lives, do A we not see the need to turn back to the Lord? Have we gone off track, distracted by the things of this world? Have we found ourselves attached to worldly possessions? Have we found ourselves breaking the Ten Commandments? If so, then the Lord is speaking to us in the readings! God is once again asking for conversion of heart. his, however, is not supposed to be based on T a negative proposition, Don t sin! It s based on the positive proposition, Come to me! The Lord is inviting us once again to Himself. Let this Lent be a time of turning back to the Lord!

4 Page Four March 4, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT LIVING the WORD March 4, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: THE REAL ZEAL Modern life offers us many things to be zealous about things to commit our lives, energies, and resources to. But Jesus shows us there is only one thing that should inspire our zeal: God s will. FIRST READING God gives the law through Moses (Exodus 20:1-17). This reading is an account of the reception of the Ten Commandments. The first three concern our obligation to God. We are told that we are not to create idols or worship strange gods (e.g., the gods of work, prestige, etc., or even practices such as horoscopes or psychics). We should treat God s name and the Sabbath, with sacred respect. Sabbath obligation dates back to the first days of creation when God worked for six days and then rested on the seventh. Christians observe this weekly rest on Sunday to pay respect to the day of Jesus resurrection. The other seven concern our obligations toward our brothers and sisters. These commandments give the absolute minimum in terms of how we should treat others. SECOND READING We proclaim Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 1:22-25). The ways of the world are not necessarily like the ways of the Lord. The world expected God to send a Messiah who was powerful (which is what Jews considered to be wisdom) and God to remain totally spiritual and removed from this material world (which is what the Greeks considered to be wisdom). Instead of this, Jesus was born in the flesh as a baby in Bethlehem and died for us on the cross (which is wisdom of God). The love of God, expressed in this most incarnate manner, puts to shame the concepts of wisdom professed by the world. GOSPEL Many began to believe in Jesus' name (John 2:13-25). Today we hear the cleansing of the temple occurs at the beginning of Jesus ministry (for the entire ministry of Jesus is a revelation of the Father s love for us that can only end upon the cross). Animals were needed for the daily sacrifices performed in the temple, and coins had to be changed (for one could only donate Jewish coins in the temple since most pagan coins had images of pagan gods on them). Yet those who were performing this necessary function had begun to abuse their role and act in a way that was at least undignified, and more probably scandalous. Jesus spoke of the destruction of the temple of his body, but those listening to him misunderstood what he was saying and thought he was referring to the temple. This might explain why they later accused him of trying to destroy the temple. Many who followed Jesus did so to see him perform miracles (called signs in this Gospel). Their faith was superficial, for they only wanted to see a miracle worker. They were only concerned with what they could get out this relationship. They did not want to commit their lives and their love to Jesus. REFLECTION Fill in the blank: Zeal for consumes me. When listening to others we hear that zeal for money, prestige, and power can consume them. Parents of a dying child have zeal for a cure or comfort that consumes them. Every day we can see people who have a zeal for God that consumes them. Zeal for the temple to be a house of prayer consumed Jesus. So did zeal for helping us know God s zeal, God s passion for us. That zeal took him to the cross. Three days later he was raised up. The Ten Commandments reveal God s zeal for us. They show us how to deepen our relationship with God and express our zeal for God by how we treat our neighbor. They and their deeper meanings are countercultural: do not kill in body or spirit, be faithful in heart and body, speak truth no matter the cost, be satisfied with what you have. The deep meanings do not reflect the wisdom of a world that can kill with words, looks, and attitudes; or that seeks more, not less; or that uses people and creation often for self-gain. God s wisdom seems foolish to many. But if zeal for God consumes us, that foolish wisdom becomes our strength. Lent invites us to re-evaluate our priorities. What needs to change so that my zeal for God is clear? What needs to die within me so God can raise me up? Seek God s wisdom. Pray with the psalmist: Lord, you have the words of everlasting life. 6 Page Six March 4, 2018 PERPETUAL ADORATION 7 Divided by 2 = Zero Is this an example of the new Math that the kids are learning in school or something more? The number 7 appears 735 times in the Bible. God the Father created the world and rested on the 7 th day. We have 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are 7 sacraments. We are asked to forgive 70 times 7. And the list goes on, but what does 7 have to do with Visitation? The 7 O CLOCK HOUR on Saturday evening in our Adoration Chapel is EMPTY. Out of 168 hours in a week, it is the only empty hour in the entire schedule. For three months we have been advertising, hoping and praying that 2 parishioners would step forward and fill the need. If you are looking to do something at Vis with a small time commitment (one hour per week), try being a Guardian of Jesus in the Adoration Chapel. We ask for 2 adorers for each hour because if one of you is unable to make it on a given Saturday, your partner will most likely be able to fill in. Is it new Math? NO! You see, if we can Register 2 new adorers at 7 PM on Saturday, then we have ZERO empty hours. 7 Divided by 2 = Zero! Help keep the Chapel open. To register, please call Joan Taylor at or Mary Lewis at DAILY MASS SCHEDULES DURING LENT at Neighboring Parishes Immaculate Conception, 134 Arthur St., Elmhurst Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday: 6:15am, 7:30 am Friday: 6:15 am, 8:15 am Mary Queen of Heaven, 426 West Ave., Elmhurst Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday: 8:30am St. Charles Borromeo, 145 E. Questions? Please call at Visitation Parish CATHOLIC BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB Jesus of Nazareth [Volume 1] From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration Thursday, March 15 9:30am 12 Noon Parish Center ONE OF THE FIRST LITERARY UNDERTAKINGS of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI after his election in 2005 was the publication of the first part of what would eventually be a three-volume biography of Jesus Christ. This first volume covers the three years of Jesus public ministry. In this and the rest of the trilogy, Pope Benedict XVI applies the best of both classical patristic and contemporary exegetical methods in order to contribute to our understanding of our Lord. Unlike many contemporary Biblical exegetes, Benedict rejects a false dichotomy between the Jesus of history and the Christ of Faith, saying that only in light of His filial communion with God and of His equality with God can we understand the man Jesus. The book is available on Amazon.com or at your local library. If you are interested in a study guide for our discussion or have any questions about the book or the Book Club generally, please contact Madonna Muscarello, or by at gracicakes@gmail.com.
