1 VISITATION CATHOLIC CHURCH ELMHURST, IL JANUARY 14, 2018
2 Page Two January 14, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Next weekend, January 20/21, we will unite with our diocese in a collection for the Church in Latin America... Although the people in Latin America and the Caribbean are faithfilled, the needs in this region of the world are great and can often seem insurmountable. The distance in rural areas and deteriorated roads make it difficult for some communities to have Mass regularly. Language barriers and lack of resources make catechetical materials difficult to produce. We are called to share our faith with all, and this collection is a prophetic and bold way to do so. In 1994, our own diocese has a partnership with the Archdiocese of Sucre, Bolivia. Each year two mission trips, one for University students and the other for medical, construction and outreach teams, go to serve and in mutuality with the Bolivian people. Your generosity will be very helpful for our mission work in spreading God s love. Please be generous in this collection, and take this opportunity to share your faith. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God bless you. It was great to celebrate Mass and to greet parishioners at the reception. The parish gift was very generous. I was deeply touched and humbled by your announcement that Bishop Joseph M. PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney It s fitting that on my birthday (Jan. 14) that I get to hear one of my favorite stories and passages in Scripture: the calling of Samuel! he calling of Samuel is a passage that I think T the majority of Catholics can relate to, at least I do. Some background information about this is needed. Samuel was a result of Hannah s (his mother) prayer. She was barren and desired to have a child. She cried in the temple, only to be promised by Eli, the high priest, that God had heard her prayer. She conceived and had a son, Samuel. At age three, she gave God back the gift He had given her Samuel and left him at temple to be raised as a priest! ounds like a story about you and me right? S I know it doesn t sound like it, but let s look a little more closer at this story. Samuel was taught the faith from a very young age: hearing stories in the Scriptures; participating in rituals that he would one day lead. He was going through the motions! What had he yet to encounter? The Lord!!! I believe many us are like Samuel, at least I was. I knew the stories of the faith. I knew the stories of Christ, his birth, life, and death. I was familiar with the parables like the Prodigal Son and The Sower and the Seed. I was familiar with the Mass, which I have been attending since as long as I can remember. I received all of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Communion and Confirmation. But what had I yet to really encounter? The Lord! The question, then, may be asked, How do we encounter the Lord? gain Samuel, gives us an idea. Samuel puts A himself in a place to encounter the Lord. He is in the temple sleeping; sounds like what I did when I was a kid during Mass. And when the Lord called, he responded, Speak, your servant is listening. Let us not be discouraged if we have yet to encounter the Lord, let us just put ourselves in a place to hear His call, and when we hear Him calling respond like Samuel! The 2018 CMAA is Underway! This month, the Diocese of Joliet has mailed information about the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) to all CMAA donors. The CMAA supports 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the Diocese, (including ours), and our friends and neighbors most in need. 70% of the amount paid over our designated goal of $136,900 is returned for our use. This is a great benefit for our parish! Please review the information you receive and prayerfully reflect on your gift to this year s CMAA. If you do not receive a mailing, please contact the parish office.
4 Page Four January 14, 2018 Visitation Catholic Church Scripture Reflections for SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LIVING the WORD Sunday, January 14, 2018 THIS WEEK S FOCUS: ANOINTED THEN, ANOINTED NOW We are anointed with holy oil both at our Baptism and Confirmation. This makes us anointed ones for God. But the sheen of that oil disappears soon what must remain is our living witness. FIRST READING Speak, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19). This reading speaks of the call of Samuel, the last of the judges of Israel. A judge was a leader who also served as prophet and priest. Samuel had been conceived through a miraculous intervention of the Lord and he was dedicated by Hannah, his mother, to the service of God while he was still a baby. He responded to God s call in the middle of the night, and God thus gave his every word authority and power. SECOND READING Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you (1 Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20)? This letter was written to a community that was mostly Gentile. Pagans were famous for their sexual immorality, so Saint Paul must remind his readers that their bodies are to be used with modesty. God created our bodies as good, but sin has caused us to use them for evil purposes (e.g., using ourselves and others as objects instead of treating them with respect). Jesus died on the cross to give us a new chance. He asks us to use our bodies in a way that proclaims God s goodness. We are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we should not allow ourselves or others to be degraded or manipulated. GOSPEL Andrew found his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus (John 1:35-42). John the Baptist proclaims Jesus to be the Lamb of God. In Aramaic, the language that John spoke, this phrase is a wordplay. It could mean the Lamb of God as we see (referring to Jesus death, which freed us from our sins) or it could mean the Servant of God (again, referring to Jesus death, which expiated our sins). Two of John s disciples follow Jesus to see who he is. One is Andrew, the brother of Peter. The other disciple remains unnamed. Many believe that this is the beloved disciple. It is Andrew who calls Peter to meet and follow Jesus. He tells Peter that Jesus is the Messiah. Peter receives a new name, Cephas in Aramaic (translated to Peter in Greek). This name means rock. In Matthew this is explained as Peter being the solid foundation of the Church. REFLECTION Do people point to you and say, Behold, a follower of Christ? Do they follow you? Do you ask why they re following you and invite them to follow Jesus, as Andrew invited Simon, now known as Peter? We put on Christ at baptism, so to see us is to see Jesus. We became his servants. We promised to seek to know God s will and to live it in clear and concrete ways. So these questions are not far-fetched. The Corinthians were beginning to learn that listening to God s voice and following Jesus Christ asked them to change their lives. They were called to glorify God and live as temples of the Holy Spirit. So are we. Following Jesus means that how we treat one another, care for ourselves, make decisions, and care for creation looks different than how we d live without being members of his body. Listening for God s voice is a beginning, but we also need to reflect on what we hear. Then we need to respond by living differently because of what we ve heard. According to St. Francis de Sales, we carry the Lord on our tongues, recounting his deeds and praising him. We carry him in our hearts with tender love and affection. But these two ways do not amount to much unless we carry the Lord in our arms by living the ways of God clearly and concretely. Listen for God s voice. Contemplate what you hear. Then share the fruits of your contemplation by living Jesus so clearly that others point to you and say, Behold, a follower of Christ, the Lamb of God! 7 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Always Get What You Need... EUCHARISTIC ADORATION ST. AUGUSTINE ASKS RHETORICALLY WHY WE SHOULD PRAY IF GOD ALREADY KNOWS WHAT IT IS WE WANT. You may have wondered the same thing. He answers that prayer clears and cleanses our heart, and makes it more capable of receiving the divine gifts which are spiritually infused into us. Often, we know only what we want but it is God who knows what we truly need. Your heavenly Father knows all that you need (Mt. 6:31). We should persevere in prayer because it disposes us to receive what it is we need which often is quite different from what we want. Prayer arouses humility and hope because it reminds us of our dependence upon God (from Filled with All the Fullness of God). When we pray, we talk to God. When we compare prayer to God to talking to a friend, it s always better to be with that friend in person. So, come to the Adoration Chapel and talk to Jesus in person. Tell Him what you want and let Him give you what you need. The Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have an EMPTY hour, Saturday, 7-8 PM... To register for that hour or an hour of your choice, call Mary Lewis, at or Joan Taylor, at January 14, 2018 Page Seven CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH WOMEN S WEEKEND JANUARY 27-28, 2018 Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) is a personal and parish spiritual renewal process.
